The other thing he said too is that its less likely an extension is involved. In which case I'd argue 1st, Holtz, and Shak is probably an overpay.

Yeah Devils fan here. Theres no way you come off an elite talent like Hughes/Kakko, who is going to be on an ELC, without getting something great back. I don't imagine the Rangers would either. By comparison, Suzuki, 15 OA, etc, are spare parts.

Wow. Scratching blake coleman... putting zacha on the 2nd line.. and... burying Andy Greene, their captain.

I mean, as a Devils fan I like the idea of Tavares. But, Zacha is probably still in the top 12. Top 9 if he moves to wing. I also dont see any way they bring Grabner, the Rangers plant, back. Maroon I hope for.
Only issue is it doesnt address the defense that isn't so hot.

Curious why they would make that trade for Kesler. Particularly to play him on the 4th line?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>youiswhatyouam</b></div><div>OEL is, without a doubt, a much better defenseman than Severson. </div></div>
Yeah, I mean I suppose we differ in that I do believe Butcher will be a passable middle pairing guy. I believe Greene likely can still play top 4, but not top 2 at all. If your top 2 is OEL and Vatanen, thats on par with many other teams, really better than most. I won't debate further what you think it takes to get him, because I keep repeating what the ask is according to the media. I believe the actual return for him will be less than the ask. It almost always is.
The other thing that is key to my argument here, don't forget I added JT. Is that realistic? I dont know. I think theres an 80 percent chance he just returns to Long Island, but this is hypothetical. If youre running JT AND adding OEL... then it absolutely is a Cup contending team next year. Yep, they could ice a better defense. But it doesnt matter if youre running a generational center and then Nico who is merely a great center, and Hall who is a top 3 LW in the league IMO. Ask the Penguins.
OEL is just that good. Hes a number one defender. There probably arent 12 true number one defenders in the league, and basically no team has won the Cup in the last decade without one. The Pens kinda did last year, but Schultz played way over his head and made up for it IMO.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>youiswhatyouam</b></div><div>Sorry, man. I love the Devils but there's no way that's enough for OEL, who is definitely a guy you overpay for. Plus, using Severson to upgrade to OEL is like 3 steps forward, 1 step back. We need a few upgrades to the defense and it would be a hard pill to swallow to lose our best defenseman just to gain a new best defenseman.</div></div>
Its not a hard pill to swallow. He is good but OEL is a clear upgrade. He is a number 1 defender, full stop. Further, Severson plays the right side where we are stronger. If you look at my roster thats the idea. Greene is no longer a top pairing guy so you need a new guy on the left side up top. Besides... if its 3 steps forward 1 back... thats... still... 2 forward? Thats how any trade of value works, you lose something good to get better. If you meant 1 forward and 2 back as the saying usually goes, its absolutely not.
Whether its enough or not, thats up for debate. I really dont think a team gives them two impact players from their roster and a 1st rounder as is being reported as the ask. The thing that devalues him is that hes under contract for one more year and theyre obligated to make a move somewhat soon. If they can do it before the deadline this year a team gets two playoff runs with him. Not many teams can make that move either in my mind.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smitty426</b></div><div>Would a Vatanen + adds be of interest</div></div>
This is an option I have heard thrown around by fans as well. I would consider this too. Its the same concept as what I did, though I debate how much better Vatanen really is than Severson. Hes better no doubt, but Severson is younger and on a longer contract which I think presents value.

Depends entirely on the situation. Does he sign an extension or agree to one before the trade (keep in mind this trade happens this summer) I might buy your argument then, but probably not. Otherwise? Its actually probably too much for the Devils to give up for a rental.
The ask is being alleged at two impact players and a 1st as of this very moment. I find it highly unlikely any decent team does that. A good roster player under control (thats Severson) a good prospect (thats McLeod) and a 1st rounder is probably not that far from reality.

Make it Muzzin and I atleast consider it. A few years younger, still 3 years on the deal, and I am mor interested in left defense on this team.

Kovy to the Isles
For starters, the Bolts got more than that with a guy who straight up came out and said he would only play for the Rags. Unverified reports state he wants to stay in one metropolitan area, or one state. Not quite the same.
The Devils still hold all the cards here if he wants to play in the NHL next year. If the return is merely a 2nd, I would simply sign him to a one year deal and move him at the deadline for likely better. If not he can stay in Siberia another year until he is a UFA. I dont think that is what he is going for right now. A guy in his position isnt really in a place to dictate the terms of his return. I do believe he and Ray Shero work together to find a fit, and I do think that the Isles are a good location for him to go. I just dont believe a pittance gets you that much scoring help.

Kovy to the Isles
Because based on that shot alone, he still has a lot of goals left in him. If its so simple, why are you willing to pay him 5 million a year? The Devils hold all the cards this year as far as his return. His path back to the NHL goes through them. I do think the Isles are good destination for him. But it wont come for a 2nd rounder, especially when you consider the number of teams who might be interested, in addition to the Devils ability to retain half his salary after they sign and trade him, or absorb a junk contract to facilitate. I aint saying they get the world for him for the very reasons you state. He wont be quite the guy he was when he left. But it wont be nothing either.

clark, I agree. Take Kovlachuk and trade him. He is not for a team that might still be a few years away. The Devils are better off today than they were this time yesterday. But Nolan/Hischier doesnt end this rebuild, merely acclerates it. They need assets, not an aging winger who may not be real useful in say 2 years when theyre a lot better. They need picks or defensive help.

PLAYOFFS!??
Anaheim fans just dont seem to understand the gravity of their situation. You are going to lose a good defender this summer for little to nothing. It may not be to the Devils. It may be a better deal for Anaheim than presented here. But, it wont be anywhere near Fowler/Vatanen/whoevers true value. It could, worse yet, be for nothing to Las Vegas.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>It's not losing him for nothing that is the issue. Oilers would be able to offer more (and willing) and so would other teams.</div>
I agree the price may be higher, but the Oilers run into a problem themselves. They are then left exposing one of Larsson, Klefboom, or Sekera. Another avenue for the Devils may be eating a bad contract in Anaheim, like Despres or Stoner. Maybe his specific suggestion isnt outstanding but the idea of getting Vatanen for a distressed price isnt crazy.

New Jersey for the new season
Issue I see with this is for the Wild. I am okay with either Brodin or Dumba, more than okay. Scandello is good, but I find him less interesting. However, the Wild have 5 good defenders to protect in the draft. They're going to lose one basically no matter what. So, why trade another to New Jersey for a pick? They'll still lose a solid defender in the draft, which places them in the situation of having given up two defenders for little.

2017-2018 w/ potential offseason moves
I would say the reality of Lovejoy if he is moved, is more like we get back a 5th round pick, and give someone a 3rd round pick. Its a salary dump.
If it was me, I would simply play him out next year, and but him out the following summer.

steinosaur19 Taylor Hall trade test
I have no issue with the idea of trading Hall if its a tear down rebuild. But the returns have to be way better than that, like 1st round pick and top prospect, top young player. He is one of the top LWs in the league.
And, I dont know that I am giving up a potential top 10 pick, AND a 3rd for Niederreiter either. Hes good, no question. Just not sure hes that good.

palhal, I concur. Those are a two big questions, neither of which I have an answer to. Like you said, they have the cap space to sign him for a long time as the highest paid player in the league, and a lot of other teams cant. NJ has a lot of its core players under control, and in this scenario they get Palmierri under control long term as well. But they really lack is top end talent.
