Sujet: The dream

Caveat: this deal is awful for Boston if you're only going to use Mayfield & Parise as your 7th D/13th F. It doesn't make sense for the Bruins to be adding Mayfield with their RHD depth, and while Parise isn't a bad guy to add, he's a third liner at best here.

But the precedent for Mayfield being a highly valued asset at the deadline is easy to find. Mayfield gets 21 minutes per night on a team in the top half of the league in terms of goal prevention, and is the #1 Dman in terms of TOI on the 5th best PK in the league. He's a pending UFA on a $1.45M cap hit. The obvious comps for me are Ben Chiarot and Josh Manson - both had a higher cap hit *with full retention* than Mayfield's ($1.75M for Chiarot, $2.05M for Manson). Mayfield's possession numbers are stronger than both guys' numbers were on their old teams at last year's deadline, he has about the same amount of playoff experience as a top 4 guy that Chiarot had at last year's deadline (and more than Manson), and even advanced stats like GSVA put Mayfield on par or better than Chiarot & Manson were at last year's deadline.

Chiarot got that 1st, a 4th, & Ty Smilianic; Manson got a 2nd and a much stronger prospect in Drew Helleson. While I think it's more likely Mayfield's package resembles Manson's, I don't think it's crazy to think a team could goose their offer to a 1st rounder if there was a bidding war. For all the talk about Gavrikov being the belle of the deadline ball for defensemen, Mayfield has been more productive than him - and again, that cap hit can't be beat. Gavrikov with full retention comes in at a mere $50K cheaper than Mayfield's full hit.
