Deadline day

Feel they didn’t trade away everyone they should have (Benn, Schlemko) but it does tell me that MB won’t be undercut even if it is on depth players. Clearly had a price for those players and the price wasn’t met

Is the next 6 months the most pivotal stretch in in Habs history?
Obviously a slow, yet steady deadline for MB and MTL... ultimately players who had to go (Schlemko and Benn) didn’t get traded although that opportunity is still available at the draft. They did get two mobile solid 3rd pairing guys in Valiev and Reilly who should be much better than Morrow, Benn and Schlemko, which IMO is a step in the right direction. Of course Patioretty was rumoured to be moved today but it looks like a 99% chance that happens at the draft. They also have the draft lottery and draft coming up in which they will likely pick in the top 5 for the first time since Galchenyuk was drafted (2nd best player in that draft class). It could be stretch for them to get Dahlin... but then again look at Philly last year. Also with a couple draft moves Montreal could have upwards of 7 picks in the first two rounds of the draft so a really good opportunity to build their pool back up. And then of course some generational talent could hit the free agent market....what say you? When was the last time Montreal had such an important offseason? What should they do?

Chill man, wasn’t saying he’s highly touted to be a number one, just saying a lot of people with good hockey knowledge (Bob Mackenzie etc...) were saying he’s ready to break through and play a full time third pairing role. Which is exceptional for a 22 year old. Rychel is more of a darkhorse but you never really know... would be tough to play against on the 4th line. Stop assuming that I think they’ll both be 50 point getters

Agree Petry and Alzner should bounce back but Morrow schlemko and Benn should be moved if the opportunity arises... need more skill and speed with defensive prowess

Honestly I think there’s a 90% chance that patioretty gets traded before the draft... if you’re going to address the teams biggest needs that’s your best bet for getting a young Center. As far as Dahlin the odds aren’t there but with the update lottery format there’s a shot if they finish 4th or 3rd last.

Plus we have good draft picks and should be able to draft well and sign 2 good UFA's with cap space. Depending on Taliev, I also like Andrew Nielsen and Tyler Lewington, both a hard hitters with some nasty to their game. Good on PK too.</div></div>
Agree although I feel the biggest problem is the amount of dead weight their is on the back end which might end up having to be buried in the AHL or shipped out on waivers. Lots of potential to create a young mobile D core lead by Weber

I think ideally for Montreal they either trade or draft a young d with more potential that mete or Juulsen to play with Weber and then Juulsen and Mete can be paired with Alzner and petry

But I agree to move all three of them. I would also move Alzner and Petry. Alzner because he is being paid for top four minutes but plays more like a 5 or 6 and Petry, because his d-zone coverage is terrible. His offense is good but his minus 27, I think leads the team or is near leader of team.</div></div>
I think you’d be surprised what they can get for those lugs hahah, habs definitely are not trading Petry with the offensive season he’s having and no one will want to touch Alzner with that contract... just going to have to hope he’s better next year. There’s going to be a young influx on the back end next year so some of the older guys will be taking a seat no matter what

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawks34</b></div><div>montreal could get more from that package. taking bobby ryan,s contract should be a 1st and taking a less bad contract off montreal's books. giving plekanec and benn to san jose for ryan and a 1st, would be a bad trade in my opinion. plekanec is a ufa, so his cap hit is gone already for next year, so now you are stuck with 7.25m a year for another 3-4 years for a guy who is worth maybe half that. Montreal would need a better return especially if they are getting rid of plekanec and jordie benn for it.</div></div>
Benn is a liability so maybe throw in a 2nd or 3rd but considering Montreal isn’t giving up any prospects or picks don’t expect the return to be so high... also Montreal will probably resign Plekanec in the off season

Agreed with your description, I think that two of Benn, Morrow or Schlemko as to go and the last one will remain as #7 D. Habs will draft Hugues, little LHD that might be ready to make the jump from NCAA next year, or at worst the year after and will be perfectly suited to play with Weber. Mete with Petry and Alzner with Juulsen.
Still need to find a C though but it's the easiest part ;) lol</div></div>
although just for the record if montreal gets a top 3 pick and its not #1 overall they wont draft A D unless another team tries to trade up... other than dahlin i cant see a team picking boqvist or hughes over tkachuck, zadina and svechnikov

Completely agree with these assessments although two things... first of all I cant see St Louis trading Thomas. He has top line potential and they realize that. If montreal wants a legit #1 center they need to be all in on Tavares. I think they should try to get a young center and a skilled second line center so they at least have good depth at the position
