<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>akoeppel08</b></div><div>True, but I also don't see Kaut ever getting to the skill level of a Rakell, and you already probably have Newhook on an ELC replacing Kadri once his contract is up. Also Bowers, O'Connor, etc will bring cheap contracts to the bottom 6.</div></div>

Here's my take, FWIW:

Kaut may or may not end up being as good as Rakell but he may be "good enough" to be an effective 3rd-line player - maybe even good enough to play 2nd line if he has a good center. Here's a set of relevant questions: How much is Rakell going to cost on his next deal in two years? How many more years of ELC does Kaut have and what would be the likelihood of him getting a lot more expensive after that (or at least as expensive as Rakell's new deal)? And how many more big contracts will be on the books at that time? And who is coming up for a big contract the year after that? Would the Avs be in a position to pay Rakell what he seeks/has earned or would they lose him to free-agency? How may more years of team control would they have over Kaut versus Rakell? See where this is going?

The cost-control and team controlled years are going to be huge for the Avs for the foreseeable future both from the flat-cap perspective but also from the "we have to be sure we have the money to re-sign our guys" perspective as well. So I wouldn't count on seeing the Avs trade many of their top-tier assets unless they get a hell of a deal on another top-tier, young asset. I think this is especially true of someone like Kaut because he's one of the only decent prospects they have on the wing. Move Z? Yeah, probably but that's different because he's an LD. Move Jost? Maybe but that's because he hasn't been developing like they want or expect (their fault for pulling him out of college too early). Move guys like Byram, Timmins, Kaut, Bowers or Newhook? It's possible but, like I said, they'd have to get a hell of a deal.

Rakell is a good player on a decent deal for now but it's about more than that and I think the team has a very specific plan for how the next 1-5 years are going to go.
