<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PGHBOB69</b></div><div>I’m a tanev fan!! Has had Selke votes the last two years. That proves right there he’s a great defensive forward. But his term isn’t great. Long contract. And I just don’t see where PO-Jospeh fits now with Matheson. Not saying we should just dump him. He’s a top 100 prospect, NHL ready.</div></div>
You are just dumping him though. I didn't say hold onto Joseph no matter the return, I said that there is zero reason to include him in this trade.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>Bennett is just a former 4th overall pick with potential still. I think Calgary miss uses him just like they did with Janko. </div>
Where he was picked is not relevant as that was in 2014 and there are things called "busts" ever year. Bennett is an NHL caliber player, but he is nothing more than a 4th line banger, but more than a step below Tanev, as Tanev is better defensively and a better skater. He is not misused, he is just not what he was projected to be.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div> You have to give something up to get something. Like Kappy. A 1st round pick and a “C+”, “B-“ prospect, our 4th-5th best prospect in our system. Like Sprong for Pettersson. Everyone thought that was an overpay at the time too. Sprong was the prospect with all the potential. </div>
Granted, but you are giving up something for nothing. Nothing coming from Calgary in this trade compares to Kapanen. Sprong was a bust when he was traded to Anaheim and anyone that did mot than regurgitate bloggers knew that. Sprong for a 5th would have been good value for the Penguins.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div> I think Lucic is a good fit on Geno’s line. And fits the timeline of the Pens and Sid, Geno and Letang chasing another cup. I could see the Flames retaining 1M-1.25M for the 3 years left on his contract in this deal though. You are probably right. And Lucic looks a lot better at 4.25M per or 4M per. </div>
You commented on Tanev's term being a negative, but Lucic still has 3 years left and will be older when it ends than Tanev will be when his ends. And again, Tanev's caontract ($ and term) are becasue other teams wanted him too. No one wants Lucic at $5.25M, not even at $4M. The debate about Lucic being good with Malkin is a subject of it's own, but Lucic is slow as mud, and his hands vanished in 2016. I do not know why you think that he would work. Also, the original AGM didn't have any retention, so adding $1.25M retention isn't the same thing. Not enough at all, but not the same thing.
The more that I think about it, the more I think that my two suggestions (Lucic, Bennett, 2nd for Tanev -or- Lucic ($2M ret), Bennett for Tanev) are still bad for the Pens... but Tanev, Joseph, 4th, 5th for them with no retention is simply horrible for the Penguins.

Rust is a good bottom 6 guy, but at 28 and with only 2 years of term would never be considered a main piece and Pettersson an okay bottom pairing defenseman, but Winnipeg isn't going to trade Laine to fill out the bottom 6 with role players. They're trading an impact player, they would want an impact player back. I understand debating with Pittsburgh homers like the guys above is pointless as they are so biased they can't think realistically.
Anyways, there just isn't the long term piece in that offer that would make Winnipeg give it a second thought.</div></div>
Well, at least you apparently agree with everything that I said about Laine since you didn't counter any of it.

Pens trade Flames
Lucic, Bennett for Tanev, Joseph, 4th, 5th
You've done some "oh boy" AGMs, but this one is probably the biggest. Lucic is HUGE negative value. Potentially the worst in the entire league. Top 3 for sure. Tanev is not even in the ballpark of bad contracts, IF you consider his contract bad (remember that there was a 5 team "bidding war" for Tanev which is why his contract is what it is, and he had a great season last year which would only have increased his value). Tanev, 4th, 5th is still overpay. Before the buyout, Johnson, 4th, 5th was more in line.
There is literally ZERO reason for Joseph to be in that deal.
I do not want Lucic at all, but going with your deal:
Lucic, Bennett, 2nd for Tanev
Lucic ($2M ret), Bennett for Tanev

Bennett, 3rd for Pettersson
3rd turns into a 2rd if he scores 25 goals or resigns
So if Bennett scores 25 or resigns (which is better for the Pens, the pick goes from a 3rd to a 2nd (which is better for the Pens). You have that backwards.

DeSmith, Rust for Raanta ($2M ret), Fischer, 2nd, 3rd
DeSmith @$1.25M > Raanta @$2.25M. Fischer is a 4th line banger which the Pens have a number of. however, his lack of defensive ability makes him worth very little.
Even though I do not see the Penguins doing this, going with your trade:
DeSmith @$1.25M for Raanta @$2.25M, 3rd would probably be value.
That leaves Rust for 2nd and a 4th liner.
There is simply no reason for the Penguins to do either side of this trade.

Laine trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Windjammer</b></div><div>Lol. No wonder you think this makes sense you don't understand contracts or player skills. Rust ,with the exception of one fluke year as I said, is a bottom 6 player. At 28 he is what he is.
Pettersson would be behind Morrissey, Heinola and Samberg and was only in Pittsburgh's top 4 because Pittsburgh has bad defense. Poulin is okay, but as a winger isn't needed by Winnipeg.
Now for the funniest thing in your post. Rust is two years from being a UFA while Laine is an RFA for 3 more years. As an RFA, Laine can't "just walk". He can sit, but it does nothing for him, as he still owes 3 years. Read up a little bit on contracts to get a better understanding.
Sorry to hurt your feelings, it's just a bad proposal.</div></div>
While I fully admit that Laine is a solid point producer, well, actually a solid goal scorer, you are overdoing the value plays on both sides a bit. He is not a creator. He scores goals. However, it's not like he is Ovechkin at that. The last two years he has been 3rd on the Jets in goals scored, 4th in points. He is good at it, but he is not as much a monster at it as people like to suggest. He is not defensive, he is big but not exactly physical. He is not "the guy" on a line, he needs others. The biggest thing for him is that he will be turning 23 this season, so you would expect things to improve a bit over the next few years from where they are now. But his personality might be a bit of an issue as well.
To me Laine is in the 2nd tier of players, probably towards the bottom of that tier. He is not a superstar (Oechkin, Crosby, etc). He is in that start range of not someone that you build around, but a piece that you get to put around that cornerstone player(s) to prop them up. A very important piece, but a bit over hyped.
Personally, I'd rather pull Connor from the Jets, or even Ehlers. (#1 pick would be Scheifele, but that is not a comparable to Laine) Connor is good offensively, okay defensively, but soft as wet tissue. However, he doesn't require others to make the plays for him. He is kind of like a Kessel with defensive awareness. Ehlers is behind Laine, but he is also considerable cheaper, a better value.
Due to contract and attitude, this is an overpay by the Penguins.

The Caps are short goaltending depth in the organization. They will be looking to add non-NHL goaltending, not move out Copley.
Why would the Caps trade Orlov? Are you folks just looking at some meaningless offensive based stat that is idiotic to judge a Ds value by and figuring that he is low value? Orlov shouldn't go anywhere.

Armia is not what the Pens need, especially for $2.6M. They have physical forwards, they have better defensive forwards. They need faceoff winning 3C, but for W, at $2.6M they need point production. Armia is not that. He gets decent ice time but produces little offense. He is even a bit of offensive black hole on the PP.
He is fine if you already have him, but I'd rather keep Reese and the cap space.

Lundqvist isnt going to count, Kempny is on LTIR, so that is $4M off. If they need more space they can move Jensen, since they have 8 NHL D, give someone a mid pick to take Panik or Hagelin. No reason at all to move out their very solid 3C.

The season fell apart at the TOR trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>This team isn't a wash though. The improvement on this team does not have to be in the top 6. Lets be clear on that. That was never the intent. The top 6 is basically....a wash. That's the point. The improvement is in the bottom 6.
And the argument is Mercer helps generate more offense than Jankowski. We can talk about defense all day, but the whole idea here was the 4th line eating the majority of those minutes. Much like they did last year. Yes in some sense it is hiding the rookie. Ok that's fair. But what difference does it make if we are hiding a rookie or Jankowski. Because both lines at this point should be hidden. The difference comes in what do they generate when they aren't hidden. Mercer has way more offensive pop in his game. He also plays with speed. So truth be told he'd slide right in to this system.
This team is going as far as the help on that bottom 6 can give them. While the 4th line can help make stops, it's not generating much offense. The current 3rd line of McCann, Jankowski and Poulin if we are even lucky enough to get him, isn't looking at that promising. Every penguins fan knows that can not be the 3C solution. There are like 20 posts a day on that issue.
So when I say you are putting the hopes of this team on Jankowski playing him at 3C you are basically saying...this is it. Limited help from the 3C. As you are hoping for a bounce back that probably isn't going to happen. I'm not going to sit here and argue the kids age. Yeah he's 19. So what. This is a league that is getting younger and truth is, he can play. Being able to pick and choose how you use him to help him goes a long way. Ask any hidden 2nd pairing Dman. This is a better team because the 3rd line can actually impact a game. Screw the age argument it's about the player. He's fast, which means he's dangerous on the ice with the puck. You put him with someone as fast as McCann with a great shot and you got to worry about that speed on the ice.
It's not like he has to play 3C in a traditional role. Crosby already takes the majority of faceoffs. Blueger is gonna get the ones in the DZone when they need a stop. He'd be very limited there. But you get those legs moving on the ice and force the other team to chase. Instead of sitting back thinking you have to defend on that line.</div></div>
I've had a headache most of the morning and been a bit edgy because of it. I just relooked at what I posted in this thread and realized that it is a bit... aggressive. For no reason. At all. I apologize.

Rutherford has to have a trade up his sleeve right
Top-6 is solid
Bottom-6 is fine. A 3C upgrade would be nice, but the bottom-6 is certainly not bad.
Top-4 D is solid
5-8D is fine
They want to go with Jarry in G. Anyone that they would bring in to back up Jarry wouldn't save the ship if Jarry falters.
Sure, you might have been able to bring in a 78 instead of a 76, but in reality that is not going to really change anything. Also, the player would have to want to sign in Pittsburgh as well. Maybe Haula wanted to go to wherever Granlund went like people are suggesting. Maybe signing $700K Jankowski had ZERO impact on the Penguins ability to sign Granlund and Haula for $5.5M+. Insert additional such logical comparisons of what could have happened vs what did happen. Also, $2M to play for the Penguins is not the same as $2M to play for the Rangers which isn't the same as $2M to play for the Panthers. The way a player expect to be used on the Penguins may not be the same as of the Predators which may not be the same as on the Canucks. Just because a team signs a guy for $1.75M, it does not mean that guy would have signed with the Penguins for $1.75M or even $2.5M, etc.

Basically, the bottom line of this AGM is
Out: Kapanen, Jankowski
In: Namestnikov, Mercer
"Convince me this isn't a better team."
"no one is arguing Namestnikov over Kap"
"Mercer ... knowing that 4th line can munch minutes to help take the harder minutes from him. "
Once you convince yourself that your team is better, maybe we can have the debate. Right now it's not really a discussion worthy premise.
