Quoting: TheWolfe
So right side you listed can be summed up like this:
Franchise player, a bum who can't crack the lineup, old slow guy who's best hockey is behind him, offensive D who's had a good year but ain't exactly winning a Norris, and a guy who really should play on the left side.
I do keep forgetting ASP is a righty, but he's 2 years away at best. Tuo seems like he's doing well, but do we *really* think he's gonna contribute NHL minutes? I'm unconvinced.
Have the Wings overachieved this year? Sure. But sometimes you hit on a scratcher. Maybe Bergy is too high a price to pay, but it seems silly to not try and address an obvious need when you're in a position to make a run to the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade. Otherwise you just end up like Buffalo.
Allow me to sum up the right side since you seem a little confused.
Mo : franchise player and long term answer at the position
Holl : overpaid stop gap brought in. Does fine with what’s asked, not going to help, not going to hurt. Not a negative value in Detroit unless it starts blocking progress. Most likely gone in 2-3 years upon ASPs arrival.
Petry : retirement tour making a fraction of his contract. With Holl, rotating in and out of the lineup. Very easily the number 6-7-8 next year unless his Detroit experience isn’t how he wants to end it, accepting a trade for one last deep run. Gone after next season at the latest, probably around when Tuo/Wallinder gets a look.
ASP : looks like a flat out stud. Even if he doesn’t keep the same trajectory, as the number 2 behind Seider and being an offensive menace while being different than SY’s defensive style (Seider 6’4/ Edvinsson 6’6/ Wallinder 6’4/ Gibson, Ant, etc. mammoths).
Gibson/Tuo/Ant : all three are big, all three vary slightly in play styles. Just need one to be a 3RHD anything else is gold. Gibson seems most likely, Ant if he keeps developing, Tuo seems like Griffins captain / call up fodder.
At no point is adding Dumba for 20-30 games worth giving up Berggren or a 1st. What’s amazing is that a majority of people said Detroit would be scrapping with MTL for last place in the Atlantic while boasting a top prospect pool.
Months later they should be panic buying at the TDL in their first playoff appearance or risk falling back into the cellar? Their projection is going up, not down. If they were a team towards the end of constant success, then sure.
This will be a great experience for the Wings, and in the offseason certain aspects will be worked out. Maybe in the summer Holl or Maata is shipped out for a FA improvement (Matt Roy). Save the assets and come back next season with
Walman-Seider
Edvinsson-Roy
Chiarot- Petry
(Still having the first and or Berg)
