Tax rules need to change this is just the first major example of how it punishes some teams but not others.. what if salary cap was based off dollars players make after taxes? Is that a system that would work? Using next years cap of 79.5M using that for team with highest taxes OTT and TOR at 53% Which means TB, FL, NSH, DAL basically have a cap of 90+M compared with the 15% difference in taxes

Why the leafs are screwed after this season
Ehhhhhhh, not really. The cap will be between $83-85 million. Kapanen will sign for less. Nylander will be around 6-6,500 million. The leafs could also easily buy out Marleau and trade Gardiner to find some cap space. Heck, Marner could also take a hometown discount if he wanted to stay with the team he grew up loving and watching. Little things like this could add up to potentially $8-10 million. Don't get me wrong, I'm a leafs fan and I also think they will have a tough time keeping all these stars. I definitely don't think they are screwed in anyway, they just will have to get a bit creative with the upcoming contracts.

<a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/768876">https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/768876</a>
ahhhh the jealousy consumes the league. click the above an I think it shows the #s can/will work. after all we do have a math genius running the team.
I love how all the commentary here is from Jets/Bruins/Isles fans. Fact is JT91 , was under paid previously. had a crap team put around him, in a stadium that was falling apart / made for the basketball team, and made no promises to anyone publically that he was staying. He served his 8 years on the Island fair and square..
Now he is properly paid, has a well oiled machine of a management structure around him, playing for his boyhood team, endorsements galore (if he wanted them), close to friends and family, has an amazing young roster around him. Every team in the league would want JT91, and would/will make the sacrifices to make it happen. so why is everyone so butt hurt he made the decision that was best for him....... Like doughty/Stamkos/etc.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BruinsFan13</b></div><div>You didn't challenge me with anything. You just said it was "jealousy and vitriol directed towards the Leafs" and now saying this is a troll post and I'm showing you boneheaded Leafs fans why you're screwed after this season. Why would I be butt-hurt about another first round exit by the queefs?</div></div>
Because when a post/comments resort to insults it shows immaturity and a poor level of understanding of how the Leafs will look moving forward.
If there was any attempt to legitimately show leaf fans that 'they're screwed' you would have put more than 2min of effort into the ACGM team...or maybe look at any one of the thousand ACGM teams posted by a Toronto fan to see how the money works.

This is a typical response as of late. Get challenged on your original argument so quickly change course to something else. Can't even admit it's a troll post and now you're trying to add legitimacy to it.
No, the Leafs D isn't anywhere as good as Boston. No one would argue that it is. Also, the earth orbits around the sun. Any other obvious facts we should discuss?

Gardiner will walk and be replaced with a cheap farm hand.
They can make it work but they may have to trade Kapanen in the off season. They will have an additional 6.25 million available the year after next as well. So really they can load up this season, go cheap on the back end next and then reload again.
But what if the following happens.
What if that new Russian guy plays decently, what if Carrick plays well enough and what happens if one of the young Marlie defenders impresses next season. The Leafs could ice a defence that is better than last years and it could cost less than it does now.

I think the plan is to with the Stanley Cup this year and then fold the franchise. Go out on top.

This makes too much sense - Carolina trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rtapp326</b></div><div>So do you propose losing Marner next year then?
Tavares gets $11M. Nylander will get 6ish, Matthews probably gets the same number as Tavares, and baring a terrible season, Marner will get at least $7M. That’s $34M tired up in 4 players, and none of them are defensemen. And you’re going to have a really hard time finding the defenseman you need at $4.35M per (Hyman+Brown). Either Marner or Nylander has to go.</div></div>
No they don't because you can't get fair value in any move involving those guys. So what you do is just go really cheap in other areas for 1 season. Next season is the only one that will be tough, and there are enough bodies on the farm to fill spots that will be left vacant when Hainsey and Gardiner are off the books. Kapanen could be a guy to get traded next off season since he'll be RFA and may not be affordable. However, after next season, the Leafs will have an additional 6.25 million dollars in cap space once Marleau is off the books. It'll be a challenge but its possible, and the team is better with Nylander, Matthews, Tavares and Marner than without one of those guys.
So once again, the Leafs can afford all of their big ticket guys.

This is like something Chiarelli would do. Fulfilling a perceived need by making a significant downgrade at another position and coming away with less value in the end.
Nyladner is far more valuable than Faulk is. Yes, the leafs could use some RHD. But it's better to just be patient than it is to make moves where you come away with lower value.

I disagree and I know it's been hopeful. But I believe Dermot and Borgman are going to solid NHLers, and along with Reilly that's a solid left side. Admitting Zaitsev has to rebound and get back to his first year form, but Liljgren came on strong as junior aged rookie in the AHL. To me Ozzy, and Rosen are still questionable NHLers. Leafs were 13th last year in GAA so they weren't terrible as everyone thinks and really the group assembled in this 2019/20 post can be better than than the 2017/18 group.

Trade Feedback (Hurricanes)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CanadasTeam88</b></div><div>Just wondering, what do you think the Wild need to pass the first round?</div></div>
We've gotten to the 2nd round before, The issue has been making it past that.
I think we played well this year when the refs called the occasional penalty. In game 3, they called things tight (by playoff standards) early in the first and it set the tone for the rest of the game which we won easily and basically scored at will. Outside of that game, our major problem lately in the playoffs has been our scoring. Excluding game 3 against the Jets, we only scored 3 goals in 4 games this year. Against the Blues in 2017 we scored a total of 8 goals in 5 games. Dubnyk played great in both series but you can't get very far if the options are shutout or lose the game. Parise looked great in both series (5 goals in 8 games) but not many other players did. If we can either get someone who produces well in the playoffs or get our own guys going the way they do in the regular season, we could make a good run provided we don't have another injury plagued season from hell again.

Two Acquisitions (TOR and MIN)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cberg</b></div><div>Marner had the 2nd best P/GP rate, well behind Mathews, but, yes, did score the most points last season for the TML. On the Flames, who scored much less, Marner would have been third behind Gaudreau and Monahan(playing injured), likely behind Tkachuk too, but I digress. Hamilton led the NHL in goals by D and is solid defensively, he also has a great, sub-$6mm contract for the next 5 years, well under what Marner will likely get this year. Toronto needs D, Calgary needs RW rhs wingers. D are in general more valuable than wingers. So, I would say that for Hamilton the TML would be looking at Marner, plus something.</div></div>
Again we get in this discussion about the Leafs needing Dmen. Well doesn't every team? Leafs GAA was 12th in the league, better than Calgary's. So it's kinda fantasy that the Leafs are so desperate for a Dman they would trade their second best forward for one, it nothing else it's just a lateral trade. Leafs have 10 m in cap space and though there may/not be great options for defence acquisitions this year, sure doesn't mean the Leafs would throw away one of their top forwards with years of control.
Look at the projections of the Leafs Dmen next year, it's not as futile as fans of Vancouver (Tanev) and Calgary (Hamilton, Brodie) want to believe. I don't see many trades to any other teams for Hamilton...it's just the same Marner and Nylander and Leafs add nonsense. Just because the Flames overpaid for Hamonic and Oilers for Larsson, doesn't make that the trade value standard for Dmen..
Sorry, you're misinformed about the Hamilton contract. He's a UFA after three seasons, not five.

I'll speak for myself but maybe Leaf fans don't really believe how great all these Calgary Dmen are. Brodie has just two year left on contract then he's a UFA, Nylander is under Leafs control for at least four years.
Nylander will probably be filling a need at centre for the Leafs so his trading isn't practical at all for the Leafs. Still don't know the definition of what a # 1 D is. Zaitsev and Hainsey playing the right side and the other player might be playing almost the equal amount of minutes.....whether it's Ozhiganov, Carrick, or Dermot or a short term UFA.. hardly worth trading Nylander.

For better or worse at least they Tatar for another year.
What I think happens is the league builds up TDL for TV and ratings. So 7 hours go by and the League have this agreement with the clubs. IF TDL is really slow, Bettman will draw the names of three teams out of the hat an these teams HAVE to make a trade. So Tampa, Boston and Vegas. trading a bunch of futures of some veteran guys. No sure if helped (it probably hurt) these three clubs, but the talking heads now have some subject matter.

So now we have the same deal added alex tuch for Dzingel
It's an easy no from Vegas, Glass is untouchable, McPhee talks about him like he is already the next Patrice Bergeron</div></div>
Well then that's a big no from Ottawa since you will need a LOT more to get the best defenseman in the world than that load of crapp!

Washington
Philipp Grubauer was 7th in GAA, 12th in spct, minimum 10 gp. In the playoffs he battled Bobrovsky to back to back overtimes.
Joshua Ho-Sang, last year, the fourth since he was drafted, had two goals, ten assists and was -7. His corsi was 7% lower than his zone starts.
I think the Caps probaby would rather just trade Grubauer straight up for the 12th overall pick or for Bellows, but as a backup plan, two seconds and Ho-Sang is probably enough to outbid Carolina, Chicago, Detroit, Philly..... who knows. He has seven hits. In parts of two seasons. He's blocked three shots. That's more than one a year.
I'm not that interested in trading a likely top ten goalie for a likely complete bust. But if it comes down to two different teams offering two seconds, and they throw in someone who might, maybe, possibly still have some potential to play in the NHL full time.... I guess that helps more than it hurts... I'll grant that he's an upgrade over Barber, so far, but there are so many decent UFA wings this summer that it does not make a huge difference.
