Too much for Trouba. Maata for Trouba one for one with 2.5 mil retained.

Should be. Has NHL size now and lots of traits that translate well to the league. Also playing against men in Europe doesn’t hurt. I think he has a 2 year path.

That’s what I was getting at with not minding a step back for a season. Sets up to take a big step forward next year by resetting your cap structure.

I'm guessing he swung and missed on a few free agents. Walman deal even makes less sense now, especially when you replace him with Gus, well isn't awful but seems pointless. Paying a 2nd for 1.4M in cap savings.......</div></div>
There is no rationale for that trade. Yzerman seems to put guys in his doghouse and there is no going back. Reminds me a bit of the Vrana trade, but this one was worse. Walman started getting sat last season in the middle of the losing streak the game after they were in Vegas. I don’t know specifically what happened, but I’ve had theories for awhile. I think Yzerman just wanted him gone.

I’d expect Danielson on that roster as well as Cossa in a 1b role with Talbot. Wallinder should also be ready

For whatever reason, I’d prefer that path to squeezing in a bunch of vets to try and sneak in to the playoffs. Roster isn’t ready. Have Husso, Lyon, Fabbri, Maata, Petry, Fischer, Kane all coming off the books next offseason with Seider and Raymond (presumably) already signed. It’s ok to take a step back this year and let the kids learn on the fly. You make your move next offseason.

I’ve been annoyed at Yzerman’s spending in free agency the last two years. Cant be upset with him when he actually shows restraint 🤷♂️. You poke around on Stamkos, but at the term and AAV he got, I would have passed too. Once that isn’t available, I’m very ok with sitting everything out.

Other GM's did it successfully.
Maybe it's just hard for him? 🤔</div></div>
Husso at 2.3 for one year should be moveable. That’s a backup goalie contract. Maata at 3x1 should also be moveable. I’m confused on what the plan is with Holl if the Trouba deal is in fact going to fall through. If you aren’t moving him, why no buyout?

I’m actually pretty happy with the day. But I also don’t have much interest in trying to patch together an 8 seed. Stayed out of the craziness, left spots open for the kids, and kept term on deals to a minimum which allows you to reset your cap next offseason to make a push. Also have room to go to full 8 year deals on both Seider and Raymond if they are open to it. I’d imagine remaining moves are the Trouba deal (or a different RHD) with Holl included, shipping out Husso with 50% retained to a team looking for a back up, and potentially moving Maata for a pick.

The number of people attaching positive value to him is funny to me. He is a cap dump even at 2.5 retention.

2025 2nd and Holl for Trouba with 2.5 mil retained. No reason for Detroit to make the deal otherwise. You are essentially dumping a cap hit on us that is useful and we are giving you the ammo to cap dump a RHD (or keep him) that we are looking to offload.

Last Capfriendly before Free Agency
Which would you rather have, Matt Roy at 5.8 mil or Trouba at 5.5 while giving up Johansson a 3rd and a 4th? NY has to make it worth Detroit’s while or you can keep your 8 mil cap hit.

what i would do
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SharkTank</b></div><div>But even that doesn't make any sense for the Rangers.
Holl 3.4 mil plus 2.5 mil retained equals 5.9 mil.
That's a savings of 2.1 mil.
The whole point for trading Trouba is to sign players in UFA to fill out the roster and to re-sign their own UFA's and RFA's down the road.
Red Wings won't get both a cap dump and retention.
That's being greedy and delusional.
Pick 1.
Trouba isn't waiving anyway.
Beat your drum all you like.
It won't make it happen. 😆</div></div>
NY has the option to use the 2nd to flip Holl elsewhere or give Detroit the 2nd to move him to a 3rd party. There is not value in Detroit taking Trouba at 5.5 when they can sign better players in free agency for a similar AAV. Trouba at 5.5 is a negative asset. It may not be a trade NY likes, it probably won’t be when trading a player on a 8 mil deal that’s worth 4.

That trade is silly. But I’ll continue to beat the drum that anyone proposing positive value to NY with 2.5 mil retained is off base. He is still a cap dump at that value. Holl and a 2nd with 2.5 mil retained is the trade. Without Holl, it’s a 2nd coming back from NY.

That would change the equation for Detroit. But, as of now, I see no reason to look at Trouba as anything but a cap dump. There are better options (to me at least) that don’t require anything other than a signed contract.

Plus Trouba at $5.5M is about the same we'd have to give up to sign a UFA dman like Roy.</div></div>
That’s the point. Why pay anything for Trouba if Roy, who is a better player, can be had for the same AAV? Picks need to be coming back to Detroit to take Trouba at 5.5 or Holl needs to be going back.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FriendlyGhost</b></div><div>Picks, yeah.
Holl, no. They're moving Trouba to clear cap. Not to pay Holl a whole $2M less.</div></div>
Basically breaks down to Roy for 5.80x5 with Holl bought out for 2.3 in cap savings with no draft picks lost. NYR need to beat that scenario. In order to do so, it would require Trouba at 5.5 with the added asset to move Holl in a separate transaction to gain an addition 1.1 in cap space and a cleaner break from Holl’s contract.

Fair. Value works out similarly. If NYR want to buy out Holl, or use the pick to flip him to a 3rd party, great. Otherwise, I wouldn’t interested in Trouba unless it’s providing an equivalent asset to move Holl in a 2nd transaction. Much rather use the 5.5 in free agency on a better player without having to give anything up.
