Lightning 2023/24 Season Thread
Not a Lightning fan, but was looking through all the teams Cap Numbers...how in the world is Tampa planning to bring Vasi off LTIR and stay under the cap? Are the going to repeat Kucherov's 2021 and wait for the post season....much more risky for a Goalie than a forward to go into the playoffs with such a long layoff? Or who do they trade to free up the space? Am I missing something?

(PIT/MTL/SJS) - Granlund, Rutta, Petry, DeSmith, Légaré, 2024 1st (PIT), 2025 2nd (PIT) for Pitlick, Hoffman for Karlsson, Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd (SJS)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>draft_em_sign_em_trade_em</b></div><div>I think it was reported that 20% was the most the SJS were willing to retain and they were hoping for two 1st Rd'ers + extra's back for that.
So receiving only one 1st Rder plus extra for 12% isn't too bad.</div></div>
SJ "wins" in that they get rid of an albatross contract. They're not going to be competitive for the rest of EK's contract, so getting rid of most of his cap hit and a draft pick for him is a win. Maybe could have gotten more for EK, but they accomplished their goal.
MTL "wins" in that they got rid of stuff they don't want and got prospect/picks.
Pitt takes on an immense risk, if EK can provide something close to last year and they have a good playoff run they win. If they get back the finals they WIN. If reverts to how he was the prior 3 years, they're paying 10M for a lousy defenseman and they lose.

Arizona Coyotes signed Matt Dumba (1 Year / $3,900,000 AAV)
Its a no lose deal for Ari. Its a one year deal, they're not going to be competitive. Gives them a veteran presence and if he bounces back they've got a nice trade chip for the deadline.

New York Islanders signed Julien Gauthier (2 Years / $787,500 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyScotty</b></div><div>I voted no.
I really like Gauthier as a prospect and giving him a chance is a smart move. But this is a one-way contract for TWO years on a team that has 14 forwards that are fighting for NHL roster spots that are subject to waivers and still have to re-sign Oliver Wahlstrom. Between Gauthier, Wahlstrom, Koivula, and Fasching they are either losing players to waivers or having really expensive players in the AHL (I know their cap hit gets buried but the actual cash). Gauthier is NOT a 4th line type player in the NHL so he has to beat out 3rd liners and this also blocks young guys like Dufour from getting ice time.</div></div>
I can't see Ledecky losing much sleep over 300k...as long as there's no cap space involved, this nothing more than a low risk flier...

(SJS/MTL/PIT) - Bonino, Sund for Henrikson for picks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ShinyMew76</b></div><div>So uhh… what exactly is the point of this trade? Why is Pittsburgh involved when they don’t receive or give anything?</div></div>
My understanding is that Nick Bonino was cut in half and each team receives one side of him, though unclear whether they get the left or right.

There is the little matter that they only have about 2/3's of team under contract next year and about 10m left to spend on 8 player.
That and no one with an eight figure annual salary has ever won the Stanley Cup.....

(LAK/CBJ) - 1st, Quick for Gavrikov, Korpisalo
One day you are a beloved franchise icon, the next you on the curb next to the recycling. Its a cold business. LA did what they had to do, risky to give up your first round pick, but filled two big needs. Not likely to go far in the playoff with either a career AHL'er or a shadow of a great goalie.

(CHI/ARI/NYR) - Kane, Zech for 5th for Welinski, 2nd, 4th
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jr400</b></div><div>I remember that. Sundin said he didn’t want to be a rental. These are my words not his, but he felt like he would be crashing somebody else’s party, coming in at the end of a long process and grabbing all the glory without contributing to all the hard work it took to get the team to that point. I respected him for that. Asking to be traded to a contender always seemed a bit selfish to me.
There was a time when a player would ask for a no-trade clause because he really didn’t want to be traded. Now it seems that players are expected to waive them. I would never fault a player for not waiving it. If the team wanted to be able to trade him, they shouldn’t have agreed to the no-trade clause. I’ve seen some contracts that have full no-move clauses except for the last year when it becomes a limited number of teams. That makes a lot of sense to me.
Agreeing to waive a no-move clause only for one destination doesn’t sit well with me. Either you’re ok with being traded or you’re not. If it’s a deadline trade you’re only going to be there for a few months anyway, then you can decide where you want to go when your contract runs out. But if the team he’s on doesn’t like it, they can still keep him until the end of the season, which is exactly what they should have assumed would happen when they gave him the full no-move clause.</div></div>
Why, the whole point of a NMC/NTC is that the player takes partial control of their destiny rather than giving the team full control (just ask Jonathan Quick how that can turn out). If you are happy with your situation, you can stay, but if you aren't you and the team wants to move you, you get a say in where you go, and you are safe from being unceremoniously kicked to the curb like a certain other franchise icon just was. In Kane's case, he clearly wanted out of Chicago and wanted to go to a contender, and decided that the Rangers was the best situation for him to go to. Taking a NMC/NTC doesn't mean that you are fundamentally/philosophically opposed to being traded. Kane wanted to go to a contender and used his NTC to pick where he went.

This trade would even been more fun if rather than dumping the salary onto the Coyotes, this trade could have been combined with the Islanders/Leafs trade. Rather than giving up their own 3rd round pick, the Isles could have taken part of Kane's cap hit and then passed the Ranger's 3rd round pick to the Leafs in exchange for Engval.
Otherwise calling the "winner" of this trade the Coyotes, they literally bought a 3rd round pick in exchange for paying Kane 25% of his salary for a couple of months, turning what would have been cap space that expired into nothing into something. Can't do better than turning nothing into something.

Too many moving pieces to decide who won this deal, except that whomever stiches the names of the back of the Devils uniforms is happy that they won't have to figure out how to fit MUKHAMADULLIN. However whomever does this for Sharks is not .

After Pasta, he'd have been the best UFA on the market this summer, he'd easily have been able to get this AAV from someone, probably a touch more. Isles couldn't get Gadreau or Kadri to take their money, so if they had to overpay a bit to get this deal done so be it. Only so many top 6 forwards come to market before they're past their prime and the Isles now have one of them.

Calgary Flames signed MacKenzie Weegar (8 Years / $6,250,000 AAV)
The trade is a win for both teams.
Its a win for Calgary because they made the best out of a terrible situation and keep their window open for another 3 years. They now have three (with Kadri) potential albatross contracts to deal with later, but they've set themselves up for another run at the Cup after despite losing two 100 point players.
Its a win for Florida because the question of whether to extend two guys into their later thirties at top dollar or let them walk for nothing is solved. Instead they've got the prime years of a top forward, and won't be looking at buyout hell like the Wild are now.
I'd rather see my team on the Florida side of this deal, but the next 4 years of Calgary look far better they did when Tkachuk let them know he wasn't coming back.
