So uhh… what exactly is the point of this trade? Why is Pittsburgh involved when they don’t receive or give anything?

It's a 3-way trade, CF has to update those manually so it takes a couple minutes

My understanding is that Nick Bonino was cut in half and each team receives one side of him, though unclear whether they get the left or right.

The most interesting part of this trade is MTL and SJ trading 25+ y.o. reserve list players.

I don't even know how that's possible. Shouldn't they be UFAs or under contract at that age?

Grier just grabbing up any possible dman. Apparently SJS is going 18 D 1 G every game now.

I don't think SJS loses this trade, but they didn't win either.

Arvid as a college player has rights that last as long as hes in college, his right expire this august, Sund was previously under contract in SJ, was qualified by SJ but didn't sign so SJ owns his rights until his 27th birthday

looks like a fair deal for all involved
Pit gets a $1m Bonino
SJ downgrades their 5th to get a 7th... looks like they were close to getting nothing for Bonino
MTL gets a 5th for retaining
MTL and SJ swap a Swede with a Finn. SJ gets the bigger younger player though

I pick up many things just from CF, now it's not really anywhere on this site, but if you draft a college player, you own their rights until the august 15th after they leave ( so if you graduate college/dip college to play in the NHL in the summer 2023, the NHL team has until August 15th 2023 to sign you ). Now, for qualified but unsigned players, you have until the closest June 30th after they turn 27 ( so in the case of Sund, June 30th 2023 ) to sign them or they become a UFA

That makes sense.... Except that Sund guy, he was never drafted, signed on a one year deal in 2019 (probably 2-way), never played a game in america (lol, what?), got a QO (as you said) and his rights are still owned until this summer. It's mindblowing for me.

Anyway, I have no hope he will sign with MTL as an older LHD.

THAT'S IT!

This is Pittsburgh's big trade dealine day pick up? The real losers are the Pittsburgh fans. They were so quiet that I assumed they had one big trade coming today.

Nick Bonino is not the same player from when Pittsburgh won back to back Stanley Cups.

And the fact that Montreal was not the team trading Bonino, but might be the team that gets the best return is hilarious.

Montreal wins the trade.

The 5th round pick that San Jose received in this trade upgrades to a 4th if Pittsburgh reaches the ECF.

I guess Bonino didn't have much trade value.

Minor deadline rental deal. Pittsburgh hoping that a return to where Bonino was most successful might help him get some of that success back. I doubt that he will, but they gave up very little to take that chance.

The unsigned players are irrelevant – they’re included only because something has to move between the teams to make the 3-way deal work on paper.

The weird thing is what San Jose got for Bonino. They got a 5th and 7th, but they gave up a 5th that will probably be higher than the one they got. The downgrade on the 5th is probably worth a 7th, so it nets out to zero. The only upside is a remote chance that the 5th they got will upgrade to a 4th. As a pending UFA Bonino is worth nothing to San Jose, and that’s basically what they got for him. The only reason I can see for them to make this trade is as a personal favor to Bonino, which I guess is not a bad reason if you want players to want to play for you.

Montreal gets more for half of Bonino’s salary than San Jose gets for Bonino. I can see why they got the most votes as winner of the trade. I guess San Jose didn’t want to burn a retention slot in case they needed it for a bigger deal (which we now know they didn’t, but they were probably hoping to deal Reimer).
