Minor deadline rental deal. Pittsburgh hoping that a return to where Bonino was most successful might help him get some of that success back. I doubt that he will, but they gave up very little to take that chance.
The unsigned players are irrelevant – they’re included only because something has to move between the teams to make the 3-way deal work on paper.
The weird thing is what San Jose got for Bonino. They got a 5th and 7th, but they gave up a 5th that will probably be higher than the one they got. The downgrade on the 5th is probably worth a 7th, so it nets out to zero. The only upside is a remote chance that the 5th they got will upgrade to a 4th. As a pending UFA Bonino is worth nothing to San Jose, and that’s basically what they got for him. The only reason I can see for them to make this trade is as a personal favor to Bonino, which I guess is not a bad reason if you want players to want to play for you.
Montreal gets more for half of Bonino’s salary than San Jose gets for Bonino. I can see why they got the most votes as winner of the trade. I guess San Jose didn’t want to burn a retention slot in case they needed it for a bigger deal (which we now know they didn’t, but they were probably hoping to deal Reimer).
