I think you're going to have to either bury Staal (which seems unlikely) or just eat it until the contracts up. Buying out the contract now seems unreasonable, so he might just end up being a very expensive 7th D/bottom pairing guy

Nah, but seriously, I think that the TVR move is one we should look more into. Unfortunately, I can't see Toronto keeping Ennis. I think given his play, he'll get a slightly better contract elsewhere. Now obviously, it's up to him if he wants to stick around, but I just feel that someone out there will pay him more than the vet min. I also think both Kappy and Johnsson will demand a higher pay raise than that, especially for the term that you have Kapanen penned in for

The Canes wouldn't accept that deal for Pesce, his contract is too good, and he's a legit top pair RHD. The Leafs trading Muzzin to Carolina doesn't solve any of their problems, and doesn't really fix many of the leafs'. Plus, them retaining in this scenario just seems a bit ridiculous

I have a hard time seeing Rantanen signing for that dollar amount.
Also while I could potentially see Nylander being 3C on the leafs next year, I think he's very unproven to be relied upon as your go to 2C. Furthermore, Nylander and Lindgren for Barrie is a lot to ask for, especially given he's only got one year left, and Dubas is known to look for deals with term.

While I think that a Zaitsev trade needs to happen, I don't think we're going to get Pesce for Kadri, you'd probably be looking at more of a TVR+something else. Also, like some of the other comments have stated, I don't see us getting more than a third for Brown.

Yeah I think you bring up a good point with the cap space. I definitely looked at Carolina as a potential option for where Kadri could get sent. Looking around, a lot of people had us getting Pesce for Kadri, which I just can't see happening. TVR was another person I though about trading for. I think that when I did this, I was trying to be quite conservative, and not trying to wave a magic wand and make our cap problems just disappear as I've seen on a few other postings. I definitely agree that Zaitsev is the piece that has to go to free up the cap space. We shall see what happens though

Yeah I mean, I agree, Babs is going to be a tough nut to crack. I think alternatively, Kadri could be traded with Kapanen for some sort of defence.
