Come see me in July.
And for fun, watch the highlights from the Flames game against Vancouver on Feb 17, 2021. Pay attention to the 4th goal against. Matty would be the guy kneeling by the blueline while his check gets two cracks from the slot, putting in the second one. If you still want him in Calgary after that, then you're missing what's really going on. If you can watch that and tell me he wants to stay here, you're misreading his commitment here.

Mony has that MNTC... Buffalo would be on the no go list.
I don't believe Buffalo wants anything to do with Monahan anyways. Sure they could move him, but he is recovering from a surgery. There is risk in staking picks or prospects in turning him over. The Sabres want youth.
Tkachuk will not be a Flame as early as the start of the 2022-23 season. Twiggy (Treliving) will be forced to move him next fall or as late as the trade deadline in 2023, or face losing him for nothing on July 1, 2023.

Tkachuk isn't worth anything close to $9.0. He does take his QO and leaves 12 months later as a UFA.
Johnny only stays for more than $7.5
Yelesin is signed in Russia and never coming back
You forgot Mackey (who will be ahead of Vali and Kylington)
And most of all, Buffalo says no (and tells you not to call again)

It looks that way, but Tkachuk is gone in 2 seasons and will just take his $9.0M qualifying offer next year and walk on us the season after. At least Buffalo can trade him before that all happens, and get a real nice return. Or they could work on an early deal next spring.
I prefer this move to my Eichel #1 for both teams.

Until you move Monahan for a first and a prospect. Adams says he wants 3-4 assets, you get Valimaki, Dube, and upgrade of a second to a first + another first and a prospect from a third team. Explain how it doesn't make sense? 4 assets plus an upgraded pick.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ngikas</b></div><div>IMO the flames come out as a better team after this trade, as do the Bruins. The value may not all be there but both teams do improve in areas of need. What if we retained some money on Tuukka? I think him and Rittich would make a great 1-2. And Grizz while he isn't hanafin is a real solid 2nd pair 2-W dman that has some offensive upside.</div></div>
Why would the Flames want Rask for $7M and signed for just 1 more season, especially when he walked away from a team that had a shot to win the cup? As I said, he probably won't even play. It doesn't fix their goaltending problems at all. He walks next summer.
Why wouldn't Calgary just sign Markstrom for $6.0 x 5 years instead and keep Hanifin? I just out bid you in the UFA market. As someone else said, he isn't signing for that little. (Vegas got a hometown discount on Lehner so he could stay in Vegas with a really good team.)

Whoops - I was thinking this was another post I recently added on here. I added in Grubauer and Ian Cole taking back cap in that one.
I think you are right.
In the new one with Cole and Grubauer, it works.
I also think Sakic knows he is close to being the best team in the West. That trade ensures Colorado wins the Markstrom sweepstakes by taking back cap on guys he doesn't want, allowing him to fill the Avs biggest hole and one they have to fix, goaltending. It also leaves room for either Krug or AP, a ready now star that solidifies his defense core right now. Byrum is close but has no where near the immediate impact a Krug or AP would have. Gaudreau for Byrum? Not happening. Add in a cap dump and create space in 2 of his weakest slots? Maybe. What did I miss? Ohhh right. Sakic also gets scoring on his second line.

Calgary isn't even close to considering that trade for Hanifin, even if Rask does play in the upcoming season. Rask may never play again. Not even a first instead of a second gets Tre to return the call and start a conversation.

Dumba to Calgary
I proposed a similar trade a few hours ago on FlamesNation as something Treliving would do. I had Monahan for Dumba with a minor draft pick going one way or the other. (I think it should be a third coming back to Calgary)
I wouldn't even remotely consider it, but this is the exact kind of deal that I could see the Flames GM making. The Flames will be hard pressed to make up the goals they gave up.

Calgary wouldn't move the players for what is offered in return, let alone throw in the first rounder. No improvement to the Flames roster, and a cap nightmare for them. Sure, Andersen looks like a gain, but they could resign Talbot, not give away their best young player, and save cap space without giving up an asset. Dube is near untouchable in Calgary.

2019-2020 Flames Cap Evaluation
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>swinny</b></div><div>Considering we can debate if Frolik and Stone are part of the team next year, it isn't too bad.....
Btw, next years cap is said to be $83 million......</div></div>
Multiple reports are saying $85M, although I am aware of the $83M projection. I used $85M because of the desire to reflect how tight it is even with a higher cap. Things have to be done to clear some cap space.
Stone is likely not movable due to his health. Frolik has value, but will never be signed at the end of his contract after next season. Move the him for something, while he has value. The Flames also need the cap space. We can't make a $83M cap and that is before any upgrades to the line up are made.

for the season
Czarnik appears to have the greater upside. This is deceiving. The line combinations he has played the most with, have produced very low on ice GF/60 rates. In 259:15, his top four on ice line combinations produced just four goals, a combined 0.926 GF/60. This included 43:34 on a line with David Krejci and Ryan Spooner that produced just one goal and a 1.38 GF/60. He played just 10 games last season, 39 less than in 2016-17, and was only the 21st forward in terms of TOI for the Bruins last season. They knew what they had and let him walk for nothing.
Defensively, he was worse in Boston than Hathaway and close to Lazar in Calgary over the last 2 seasons in terms of GA/60 at 2.36. Given Boston's strength in defense, this has to be a concern. Lazar was 2.40, and Hathaway 2.14.
In contrast, even Lazar on a disappointing fourth line with Stajan and Brouwer, had an on ice rate of 1.64 GF/60 in 109:59 last season. In Ottawa, Lazar with Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman scored at 4.61 GF/60 in 91:08. That is even better than Hoff and Stone with Turris. Lazar's top 5 line combinations by TOI in his career produced 25 goals in 646:17, 2.32 GF/60. It appears Lazar may be capable of contributing when given the right line mates. For example, Lazar and Gaudreau last season posted a 3.63 GF/60 in just over 66 minutes playing together. That is even better than Gaudreau with Monahan which produced 3.50 GF/60 last season.
Haths numbers are even better. He may not put points on the board at the rate we would like, but his line combinations score. He is one of the few physical presences the Flames still have up front.
Lazar was the best Flames penalty killer last season, Hath was 2nd best, of those over 25 minutes in time killed. Lazar was 10th in the NHL. Need that kind of play in the lineup.
I hope I am wrong, but I believe that Czarnik, as a player that played 39 less games in the NHL last season compared to 2016-17, is 26, couldn't crack the lineup and was sent to the minors only a day or so after Spooner was injured, cleared waivers when being sent down, having been signed to a 2 year, $1.25 million per season one way deal contract, is only 5'9" and 160 pounds, and has only really seen success in the minors, is a bad signing by Treliving. This is an AHLer, but he will get a prime time shot at making the line up, because he has been overvalued by our GM.

for the season
A couple of things.
Hanafin? Can't miss him.
Gillies is on a 2 way, getting just $250,000 in the minors ($750,000 when up). Rittich has a 1 way deal. Rittich is the back up.
You nailed the forward list. These are the 14 that will earn spots to start the season barring injury, however, Dube will not be 14th. As a waiver eligible player that lacks pro experience, he will start in Stockton, but be back up as soon as he can find a way into the lineup due to injury. Rychel or Peluso will be 14th just to hold down a spot in the stands.
I even believe you got the 12 forwards right that should be in the lineup. Of coarse my lines would be different, but that is just a minor detail.
I think Andersson gets a spot up, not Prout. However that logic goes against my theory with Dube, unless Stone is number 7.

I don't think Calgary is getting Tavares.
But Toronto needs defensemen and won't be able to keep all their young forwards. Who will they have to part with?
Think about it. Brodie is worth a 1st and a 2nd based on the price for DMen last year. Fox is worth a 1st rounder. Calgary gets Nylander for the equivalent of 2 first round picks. Just about right for a very good RW in today's NHL.
Bennett was a top 5 pick but has been underutilized in Calgary under Gulutzan. He is tough and competitive. Someone knows his value. A 2nd and 3rd is of less value than a 1st round pick. There will be a taker.

Ferland appears to be working out with JG and Monahan. He is one of the few tough players left in the lineup. Kylington based on the preseason so far, should make the opening night roster. Rittich may be number 2 right now but hasn't had the chance to prove it. Fox is a very high quality prospect.

Flames Trade Deadline Moves
As for Brouwer, buying him out now is too soon. He would be on the books for 6 years. The consensus is to give him another year to see what happens, or try (without much luck I am sure) to move him retaining some salary during the season. Next summer he could be bought out and only on the books for another 4 years. He was good in the playoffs on the PP with Johnny and Mony.
What I am really looking at is a trade for a top forward from a team that misses the playoffs and has a scorer that can be added as the final piece. Sorry to say but I think the Rangers are in tough this season, but they always seem to make it into the playoffs.
After I did the trade, I had trouble finding a spot for Zucc. It goes something like this.
The weakness right now is a top RW, and Ferland is the pencilled in guy right now with JG and SM, but if they have had a great season and decide to make the final push by trading for a top forward, then Ferland has worked on line 1. If that's the case then you can't move him off the line. If it hasn't worked during the season, then it is not quite as good a chance to win it all, so you don't make the move for a top forward. A catch 22 really.
I was of the opinion that he Flames have done enough this offseason and should not do anything until it all unfolds in the fall, but after doing this team, I now think they need to make that one big trade for the top RW we have needed since Iggy got old on us.
As there is no clear place where Ferland can show his value. The Flames don't know how to use him, unfortunately. He should be trade bait for the top forward we need. Sad, he is my favorite Flame.
