I agree. Also we were looking at eichel who IK is much better overall but isnt great defensively and being paid far more than horvat will want. Also buch will want 6.5+ im guessing

I mean ik strome isnt 2-way but he can be the intermediate option. Also apparently barron has shown that he projects as more of a winger in the nhl. Could potentially play goodrow at 3-c if we deal strome at deadline.

As far as the trade goes, I personally think its not enough. If the 4th round pick was a 1st round pick I think it would make sense for VAN.
I definitely want to move Chytil in the off-season. The down side is hes not really a C, so it doesnt really fill a hole for them. However JT Miller can play C, and Chytil can slot into the LW spot he opens up.</div></div>
true. Maybe I overvalued chytil a bit... maybe you do chytil + buch for horvat and fourth. IDK

gotcha. Thats why I added chytil. You upgrade on wing and get a 2c who you can pay under 4 mil for 2-3 years. IDK. I based everything off the reports of the rangers trying for a buch for horvat trade. but added in the chytil part to make it a more favorable deal for the canucks. Maybe a third team is necessary... send chytil there and someone more established to vancouver. idk

on the outside we are overpaying for horvat. i agree. However, if you look at the lines, where does chytil slot in. I'm fine to overpay a little if we are ditching a player who has no longterm role on the team.

Fair. But still you cant expect the rangers to trade a high end second liner who has shown that he can be a top line guy for a solid third liner and a third round pick. Gorton is not stupid

See the kapanen deal. Was kapanen (who I think is slightly less valuable than buchnevich) and 2 ahl guys for the 15th overall pick, a depth guy, an ahl guy, and a solid prospect.
So buch and a better prospect for two firsts and a third liner does not seem that awful. maybe it should be a first and a second. But it is still close

Also with the ekholm deal, they will likely accept lower value because they will struggle to protect him in this summer's expansion draft. (they need to protect fabbro, ellis, and josi).

I guess I would be down then. Just depends what the return would have to be. If it's Buchnevich and Robertson, honestly I would probably do it. If they start asking for other futures like Krav, it's not happening for me haha.</div></div>
Agreed. I was originally looking at someone like Vince Dunn, but he is too valuable to only have him short term. Plus we have players who can take the role that he would (and that we would have to pay him to do). They just are not quite ready. I think that between his age and term and likely desire for a raise (ekholm), we could potentially get a very solid deal.

Matthew Robertson could end up being a top 4 Dman, sure! But it's not guaranteed.
Vatrano is not a "depth forward," he can score goals while playing a gritty game and is useful for any team's 3rd line</div></div>
he didnt play with panarin at all. He did play with zibanejad and kreider (this is still very good). He also missed some games due to injury, this injury came at a pretty terrible moment (it killed his momentum). He also put up these numbers while only getting minutes on a very sub par second pp unit. He has the offensive skill to be a top line forward. And I tried to compare this deal to the kapanen to pittsburgh deal. I may have been a little cheap but I think it is pretty close.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tormundgiantsbane</b></div><div>Unfortunately I don't think so. Ekholm is a top 4 D and would probably be a 1D on the current Rangers team. I think it starts with Buchnevich, however I didn't realize he is a UFA next summer (2022)... in that case, I think it's probably best to stay away from Ekholm, especially since we are not ready to contend yet. We have guys like Miller and Lindgren already and Zach Jones and Matthew Robertson coming up soon. I think the left side is probably fine and he'd be a UFA by the time we are ready to seriously contend.</div></div>
It is hard to explain, but I think that ekholms contract situation, style of play and leadership will help us reach actual contention much quicker. But unlike Trouba, we wont be committed to him for many seasons. He serves his duty in the next year and a half then heads elsewhere and is replaced by one of our many prospects. While the rangers have the skill that is necessary to contend in a season or 2, we do not have the maturity. Our third period collapses and the horror show that was the playoffs last year show that we still need to learn how to play in playoff style games. I think that Ekholm can both show the young guys how to approach these high intensity and physical moments. Additionally, I think his skill can put us in a place where we play in more of these high intensity games. Thus, when his contract expires, the still young roster will be well prepared for what hopefully will be numerous deep playoff runs and maybe a cup or 2.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>" we need every player and line to have a job that they can do well" I kinda understand your point but professional hockey isn't exactly played that well. Players have to offensive and defensive on the same shift. Certainly every player have to average to good on a few aspects their game.</div></div>
I understand your point that everyone needs to do everything, but when you look at our lines they don't really make sense. Is our third line a physical line, is it a scoring line, is it a 2 way line. The answer to all these questions is no. So what do they actually do other than fill time. I am not looking to put together a line of all grinders or 2 way guys or playmakers, I am looking to create a line that will help us do something. If we can send our third line out and know they will shut down an opponents top line, or lay a couple big hits to change momentum, etc. we will be a much better team. Looking back at the team that made the cup, everytime players like Derrick dorsett, boyle, and dom moore were on the ice you new we would not be scored on. They would win every faceoff and be very composed and play very responsibly.

We reject the STL trade. At best Dunn's a number 4 while Buch can be a top line winger with the right center</div></div>
I know the winnipeg trade is flawed, we would likely need a third party to send strome and the inclusion of a prospect. And with the dunn part. Vince dunn is a very good 2 way defenseman who would seriously help our defense. We would have 2 borderline shutdown lines. And I know buch's potential, but you have to look at the abundance of wingers we have who will likely be top 6 guys in the future. If we trade buch tomorrow, our top 6 will definitely become worse in the short term, but it will give kakko and laf the ice time they need to develop. Additionally, we would be so much more solid on the back end.
