Damon take one for the team
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>I think there are options that could keep Nemec down for one more year, but wouldn’t block him long-term. Preserving his slide may be the best long-term cap decision we can make. Here are some alternatives…
1. Sign or acquire short-term veteran to play with Luke for one year on 3rd pair.
2. Extend Severson if he will take either short-term deal or longer deal without NTC. Play the same right side for another year or two, then trade someone.
3. Play combination of in-house alternatives (Smith, Walsh, Vilen, etc).
All would allow us to keep Nemec in AHL for one more year.</div></div>
I get what you’re saying, but the kid already almost forced himself onto the team out of training camp this past season. He just had an unbelievable year in the AHL and then led all Slovakian players in ice time at the IIHF. Does that honestly sound like somebody who’s going to play another year in the A?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>He is 19 years old. Is it worth burning a year of ELC to have him learning on the fly? I would rather see him at $883k in 2026-27, when he is in his prime, and Luke, Dawson are on big deals.
Keep him in Utica one more year. Give him a few games (9 or less) at end of year. And fully take training wheels off starting 2024-25.
Also, easier to ease one rookie into unit at a time.</div></div>
If his “learning on the fly” is equivalent to what Luke Hughes just did, than yes it’s absolutely worth him being on the 3rd pairing versus paying Severson a contract (6 years/$6 million per) that doesn’t align with our long term needs. If you want the money down the line to sign Mercer, Holtz, Luke, and Nemec you gotta keep cap space open and giving it to either Severson or Graves is the wrong decision.

I just don’t see another year for Nemec in the AHL. Guy at age 18 posted 34 points in 65 regular season games, then another 4 points in 6 playoff games. Severson is going to take a 6x6 somewhere else. It’s super easy to figure out pairings too…Luke Hughes/John Marino, Jonas Seigenthaler/Dougie Hamilton, and Kevin Bahl/Simon Nemec. Brendan smith remains 7th d-man. There’s great fluidity in those pairings.

Thoughts on Signings and Roster
If you want to set up Holtz for success in this league, he plays with either Hischier or Hughes. Yes he needs to improve on his skating this summer, but it’s definitely an achievable goal for him

I’m getting the sense from Fitz’s end of the season presser that a move for goalie will not be made this off season. My belief is they will at least ride until the TDL with Vitek and Akira. We’ll see from there, but I think as it stands even if things don’t work out, Sorokin in UFA is best option summer of ‘24.

Helly trades
Devils just keep Nemec and build a defensive powerhouse in front of whatever goaltender that becomes competent enough to stop the puck. We’re building something special here. No need to give up our top talent. If you wanna talk Casey/Gritsyuk I’m all ears.

Holtz is somebody I firmly believe that he team has locked into the top 6 next season. If he was going to be moved it was going to be for Meier. Tatar got his walking papers so they could slide in Holtz imo.

Good goalies makes saves in all situations, whether the team plays well in front of them or not. Schmid got the short end of the stick and I’m not scapegoating him, but he didn’t make high danger saves and we got eliminated

Not saying they didn’t play like garbage in front of him. But I think prime Brodeur makes a couple big saves in those situations. Wasn’t like team was out shot vastly either.

I wouldn’t say he “stole” games. I’ll give you game 3. But games 4, 5, and 7 Rangers got choked out and had minimal high danger chances.

I think Tatar jetting out without talking to the media today during exit interviews says a lot of what the devils are doing next season. My belief is Tatar was told he is not being brought back. Holtz fills in the top 6 for Tatar. Casey can get us a big name goaltender; I would suggest we do so.

Then a distant 2nd is figuring out our top 6 c position going forward. We have internal options like Perfetti, Lambert, Lucius, Zhilkin but none of them are proven.
Graeme Clarke would be another name I’d be interested in. He’s probably near nhl ready as a bottom 6 rw option?</div></div>
Graeme Clarke is NHL ready. Lot of fans were calling for him by the end of the season. In terms of packages I can give you Casey and Clarke with a conditional 2nd? We win ECF in ‘24 and it turns into a ‘25 first. We give you that and Helle comes with an extension

Casey is still at least another 12 months from playing in the NHL. Holtz is in the top 6 to start next season. We have a log jam at RD behind Hamilton, Marino, and Nemec. Casey is a phenomenal player, but one that can be sacrificed to put us over the top. Doesn’t have to be Helle either. This package can be given for Sarros or Swayman too.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jimmyjets</b></div><div>We actually think we have our goalie of the future in Dom. Was a 7th round pick last year but was ohl goaltender of the year this year. Need a 2 year bridge to him though so Vanacek could be park of the return as devils need to shed that salary. We could even retain 50% on Helle to make the move cap neutral this year.
25 1st isn’t really that appealing so I’d rather give that back, with the retention to upgrade the prospect from Casey. With Hamilton, Marino and Casey long term on the right side, I’d also want to talk about if we could add to get Nemec? We add Ehlers, 50% retained for 2 years to Helle 50% retained for this year and DeMelo as a bridge to Casey…. I can try to put together an actual offer I think could work but the reality is if we got a third team involved to eat 50% of Dillon’s contract…. Could be a massive trade that works out for both teams…. Would require Nemec though…. So…?</div></div>
It’s been the position of the devs organization that Mercer, Holtz, L. Hughes, and Nemec are not available in trade talks. All 4 are expected in the lineup for opening day next season.

It's just unreasonable to think that you will be able to get 100% exactly what you want without making an concessions to Winnipeg wants and needs. Expecting Winnipeg to wait 3 drafts for the most valuable piece to them and taking back a bad contract likely pushes it too far to be acceptable.</div></div>
I understand the draft pick. And if I could do better than ‘25 I would. Im just under the impression the ‘24 pick can’t be moved unfortunately until the conditions of the Timo trade aren’t made (making 2024 ECF). Seamus Casey is a very legit prospect, but maybe Winnipeg values a center or wing. I don’t know your needs over there. We do have a high level talent from Russia (Arseni Gritsyuk), but I know hearing the word Russia makes some run for the hills lol.

There is not a better prospect in play here. I’d offer the 24 first but I don’t know the availability of the pick because of the conditions of the Timo trade. If we can move that pick it’s a ‘24 first and Casey but if you want a better prospect it won’t come from us.

Gives them a younger, decent tandem to go forward with while they redraft a team.</div></div>
I definitely figure a goalie going the other way, but seems a big name prospect is what Jets fans are looking for. I’ll begrudgingly give up Casey but nothing more than him. Think that’s more than fair

Package deal
We didn’t give up Mercer, Luke Hughes, Nemec, or Holtz for Timo, I HIGHLY doubt we do it now. Casey and Gritsyuk are the top 2 prospects available in my opinion. I think one could be included with a 1st. Casey’s first year at Michigan has him moved up in “A prospect” conversation. I understand Helle is a top 3/4 goalie in the NHL, but one year left in term devalues the return.
