Jets are probably trying to pry Mercer, Nemec or Hughes from them. The price is high now but we shall see come trade deadline how it looks - if jets are too far for a playoff push i'm sure they are able to sell for less so that he doesn't walk for nothing

I think i understand your question?

because in a trade, the other team can pay another team to save cap (see EK trade). a team would pay a third party team to retain for this year and then deal with the nylander extension in the offseason.
it saves the leafs cap taking 7 mil of the team and then maybe taking a 4 million dollar player back plus picks and prospects.

fair enough, but i feel like they will be forced to do so. Can only play 11 and 7 for so long. its impractical to bank on surviving on a 20 man roster

first - Tavares is still a ppg player - look to Kopitar contract as a comparable, he's more likely to get 5 mil area with term or 2X7

second - overpay for durzi to aquire, let alone the extension

third - Nylander is not a 10.5 mil player, nor is Marner going to sign for less than 12

The problem with nylander is his compete level is completely on his own terms - he is great at take aways and is up there in points, but he only shows moments of being the best player on the ice

no its not... not to mention the endorsements in Toronto are way bigger. the money he makes with Sonnet (****ty company that over paid him) makes up for any "tax differences"
