Duchene trade to nashville
If Dorion could pull something off like this he would deserve executive of the year, but it is very creative! So in the end it would be eight pieces in return for Duchene. I think the return will be pretty good because he will be able to play Nash. off of Win, but I don't think it will be that good. Well done though!

I'm the first to admit I may not know the scouting report on all the teams, but the bottom line is the GM will have his marching orders from the owner. And if he can come away after the trade deadline close to the cap floor adding 2 1st rounders and some other picks - he keeps his job. To look at this any other way from an Ottawa fan's stand point is just torture.

One question, if Melnyk is out, why do you need to trade your best players?

Creating forward depth
Very interesting! I"ll just comment on the goaltending. I could see the Sens offering Lehner a contract, but I can't see one of that length and dollars. I don't question his ability but there remains some question of character, and with all that has gone on the past year, I think the Sens need to be certain about character. If they deal Andy, and if Lehner does not get a great offer elsewhere, I would offer him a two year deal with similar dollars to Condon, and the winner after two years continues with the Sens, and mentors whichever young swede that wins the same battle in the minors.
As for the other deals you have propsed they all seem reasonable, but I don't think you can get all that done, and it is too much change too fast. Depending on signings, I can see one more signifant deal before the season, and one or two other deals during the season. Good job!

Sens / Sabres theory
At first I thought no way, but it is not without its merits. Both O'Reilly and Karlsson are around the same age, Ott gets the cost certainty of O'Reilly's contract, and might even negotiate a little retained salary by Buff., Dahlin gets to play with a little less pressure because he would be behind Chabot for a time. Buff. has depth at centre but could use scoring on the wings - draft pick. While Buffalo itself is not the most desirable destination, it is close to a lot of things, not to mention Melinda's home town. And Karlsson might appreciate an owner willing to spend money, albeit a little too active in the org. like his previous one. Buff. can build a defense around the best defenseman in the league, and have him for the next eight years. You can't build a winner with nothing but young stars, you need some vertern leadership.
The biggest stumbling block is that both teams are in the same division.

I was referring to the Lucic contract. I agree that things may have happened that will cause Erik to leave, but I'm saying if that happens I would rather see them get rid of bad deals rather than take back a bad deal. I'm not saying Lucic is a terrible player, but he is overplayed, same as Bobby Ryan. So dump Ryan's contract with the Karlsson deal, even if it means getting less return. That leaves the goalies contracts, and the Gaborik contract as the remaining worst deals. Gaborik's real money goes down big time next season, so if he doesn't qualify for LTIR, then use him when you can this year and buy him out next year. I say this knowing that the owner is watching every penny. The cap floor will be higher next year, so you have to hang on to some deals, and I do think the goalies will be better, as will Smith.

I never mentioned Jack Hughes. I understand he's special, but I also think Chabot, Miller and Wolann could be very good. So with everything that has gone on, lets see what these young guiys can do, and go from there.

I'm sorry, but Lucic is a non starter for me. Bad contract with 5yrs remaining, and questionable character. Why would we want to do that? Not to mention he probably doesn't want to come back east. If we go through all this pain, and trade Erik, I would far rather purge the team of bad deals and any remaining bad character.

Sorry, I can't get past your $$$ you're spending! You spent to the cap, and you sent down 6 million to Bellville, not to mention retaining over 300,000 of Pageau's quite reasonable contract. I don't see any of that happening.

I agree 100% with your assessment of the organization. And I take it your roster is more a depth chart, because wouldn't you agree that some of those young guys have to play a lot of minutes (Batherson). You don't include Formenton here, does that mean he returns for one more year of junior (NHL or Junior, dumb rule)? And what do you see for the future of Bobby Ryan?

4th pick and Hoffman trade
I think you're right, given his age, and the money he has made in his career. So why put yourself throug the grind of the NHL season unless it was for big bucks, and Ott. would not be paying him big bucks. It was wishful thinking on my part, because I knew about Dorion's scouting in Europe, and not just for drafting purposes. He certainly helped last year, in the playoff run, and I liked his speed and size, and wished he was the one we extended at the trade deadline, and not Burrows. I am hopeful Dorion found a vetern with those same qualities, and perferrably for the right side, that can fill a fourth line checking role. A role that I think will be very important with what I expect to be youth movement the team will make.

Youth Movement
I agree with most of what you have done, and especially with the overall goal. I do feel that with Logan Brown's size and injury history in Junior, he will need a full season in the AHL. (Bigger guys often take longer to develop.) And with only one year remaining on Colin White's entry level deal, I would put him at centre and give him one season to prove he is a NHL calibre centre. In his case, I'm not expecting him to be a #1 or #2 centre, a #3 would be fine. Nice job!

Hoffman, Smith and Andy trades
I understand, I think it is interesting to look at the two teams. Calgary has just hired a new coach, and he is saying the team will make the playoffs, whereas I believe in Ott. the emphasis should be on playing the young guys - finding out what you have there and in the process making room for your star players next contract, and hopefully make the playoffs as well. It occurs to me that with those two different agendas, these teams might be able to make a deal.
So I am curious what would you offer for Hoffman, or Stone? (although I would not trade Stone).

I guess I would say, top six wingers are usually quite expensive. You already have some great pieces, and Smith can play both wing and centre, and up and down the lineup. When healthy, he is a great addition to any lineup, and will protect his teammates. He comes on a reasonable contract but, he has had problems staying healthy, which is the only concern. And Curtis was a healthy scratch in Cal. a few times, for Pyatt (useful, cheap, role player) seems fair.

I completely understand where you're coming from, but he has had some good stretches in the league, as has Condon. And lets face it they would both be auditioning for the mentors role to whichever young Sweedish goalie makes the big club the following year. In the meantime we are rid of another bloated contract. Andy has been great, but he is old and that was way too much money.

A fun exercise, most of which I would do as well, except for the Zibenajad for White deal. And while it might also be plausible, you very quickly run into cap problems, if you want to keep Karlsson and Duchene. But interesting - good job!

Ideal Offseason
I agree that would be a very good offseason. The thing I don't like is the set up of the defense corp. With the speed of todays game and the crack down on hooking and slashing in recent years, I think it is asking for trouble to play defensemen on their opposite shooting side. Both Dahlin and Wolanin are left shots and I think they would both be better off playing on the left side. I believe thye experimented with Chabot on the right side to begin the year, but ended up moving him to the left side.
Anyway, nice job on the team, interesting ideas.

Sens/Ducks Trade- Would you do it?
So you're not trading Karlsson, which must mean you would resign him (and Duchene), but you're taking on more salary in Perry's deal. So I guess the team will be sold to a new owner and he/she will spend to the cap?

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I think Stone would be a good partner for Chabot, and the those top two pairs would be very strong. Also Stone comes at a very good price. As far as the Ryan deal goes, I would point to the Phil Kessel trade. When Kessel played for the leafs, he was a very talented player miscast as the saviour, and then they compounded the mistake signing him a bad contract. When the leafs trading him, and with retaining the salary, what the penguins got was a player who could score goals, on a team where he didn't have to be the"man" - heck he doesn't have to answer questions in the media if he doesn't want to, and Pittsburgh has a star at a bargain price and two cups to show for it. Granted with Ryan, because of his injury history, there is more risk to the team getting him, but that is why the conditional picks. Ryan is what he is, but when healthy he can be a pretty effective player, and at under 6 million, he could also turn out to be a bargain. Thanks for your feedback.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Oggsford_Blues</b></div><div>I like your process here but I highly doubt Vegas does that deal as it is structured, and the Caps would need something significant in return for Wilson, not just a bottom pairing d man and a future mid round pick. He has spent the second half of the year playing with Ovechkin and Kuznetsov and been consistently effective. A young, physical top 9 wing who can score and kill penalties is worth more than your offer.
I like the De Haan signing - didn't know he was from Ottawa - but the role and contract would be appealing to both sides. Nuge/Hoff is a very interesting deal, though I feel (personal opinion) Chia only wants to move that trade chip for D.</div></div>
Thanks for the feedback, if it were me, I would definetly sweeten the deal for Wilson, and I was thinking with the Ryan deal, it should be a conditional pick depending on the numbers of games he is able to play. I think Ryan is better suited to the Western conference, but with Ott. retaining that much salary, they need something in return. I think if Ryan can play between 70-80 games he is worth the 5.75 m vegas would have to pay him. So lets say if he plays north of 70 games, we get a 2nd round pick and anything less it drops to a 4th. Anything less than that and I think Ott. should hold off trading him until they have to start paying Karlsson and Duchene new deals in another year. This is all academic anyway 'cause I fear the owner won't make a serious offer to Karlsson, and instead will trade him. And I will seriously consider becoming a leaf fan.

After draft day.
I really like what you did here! I like the numbers, and the path going forward. The Burrows deal is creative, another possible scenario might be, if he is sent to the minors for the rest of this year, perhaps next season he is convinced to retire in exchange for a job in the organization (not sure of cap hit in such a situation). Everyone talks about how thin the organization is, so perhaps it is easier to convince Melnick to hire him as a scout or something if he ahs to pay him anyway.
With both Ryan and Goborik, another likely scenario is play out next season, hoping to get 80 man games out of the two combined, and then if Ryan has a decent year, we hopefully can deal the final three years of his contract, with around 1.25 million retained, and Gaborik bought out of the final 2 years of his deal when his salary drops and the cost is a little north of 4 million.
I like the Smith deal too, but I also think there will be options through free agency for a vertern Dman, if need be. These remaining games will be interesting to see if Harpur or Claesson can play as regular NHL Dmen. Good job on your team!
