Need Cap Space for Karlsson (18/19)
Well illustrated. While doing a few smaller moves could solve the issue (trading Methot and Brassard, like you suggest), I wonder if management decides instead to make just one big move where one of Phaneuf, Ryan, Turris, or Stone is traded. Similar to Anaheim today, the Sens would play as a cap team for a season or two to contend before dropping back down to the normal team budget. Who knows what it would cost to trade Phaneuf or Ryan though, or how well the Sens could replace any of these four.

Sens Dynasty
For the record, offer sheet compensation MUST be your own pick, that is, the Sens need their own 2nd round pick for these sheets, and it must be in the following year (2018 draft). Which of course they don't have (traded to NYR), and even if they did they couldn't sheet two players like this because they'd only have the one pick. Of course, I doubt either of these players would even sign these sheets, they're not far off from what they'd make anyway. Speaking of the teams, no way does Detroit or Philly not match the offer at that price.
Why is Brass taken by Vegas?

Get the lineup straight
Interesting ideas. I agree Brass should try the wing for a spell. He's been defensively sound but he hasn't been producing like we need him to. I like Pyatt, and I also know Boucher likes his matchups, but personally I'd switch Burrows and Pyatt. Pyatt is not good at finishing and I feel he, Brass and Pageau could match up really well against any line with Hoff, Turris and Burrows getting easier matchups and finishing plays. I like putting Stone and Ryan together with Smith, I feel like that line could do anything, they're three smart players (even if not the fastest).
I hope with Boucher's line juggling we catch on to something similar to this and see if it works or not. It's too bad Stone ended up being injured when he did because there's much less time now before the playoffs to see how our lineup post-deadline gels.

TOR - OTT
Why are you taking Wingels? That's the Sens offensive depth! They don't want Corrado (no one does, he went through waivers) and they probably don't want defensive liability Bozak. I also don't know where he'd slot in, certainly not at 3C (Pageau is basically Boucher's 3rd favourite forward). Finally Chabot is the Sens future stud. Do the Leafs trade their big three to address their minor roster issues? If the Leafs needed defensive depth would they trade Nylander? Of course not! Why is offensive depth any different?

COL Trade
A lot of good points being made, prospects are not guaranteed and that should obviously hurt their value; however, this is overpayment. I could see Chabot, Brassard (although I doubt Colorado wants Brassard, but strictly speaking in terms of value) and a 1st, maybe even Chabot, Brassard and Brown if there's a bidding war going on and Ottawa really wants to push, but this trade is a few pieces too much. For one Soderberg has not aged well, and is signed for three more seasons after this one. The third round pick is completely out of place in a blockbuster trade like this.
Let's just agree that if Ottawa wants Landeskog, it costs more than Lazar, Ceci and a 1st, but less than the ransom here. The second trade is weird too, I just don't understand why it happens. Does he not like Methot? The Ottawa blue-line isn't perfect but Methot isn't the issue. Just noticed Wideman's completely gone, that can't be right, he's played fantastic up to this point. He's behind only Condon and Dzingle in terms of pleasant surprises.

Duchene
If Ottawa was Landeskog/Duchene away from serious cup contention, I could stomach losing Chabot, especially since these aren't rental players. Or if Phaneuf played like a $7 million defenseman. But he doesn't, and he's only getting worse, so a guy like Chabot it all but integral to keep Ottawa where they like to be. Ottawa should go ahead and offer both Methot and Ceci (that way they can protect Wideman, who's better than Ceci anyway and apparently Vegas has eyes on him) and if Colorado wants to lower their ask and settle for that then great.

Possible but unlikely expansion draft
Canadian Redneck: I agree completely; its not in Vegas' best interest to just take Ryan. Add in a handful of good picks though, even a decent prospect like Englund or Lazar (although I personally think Lazar's hype has died), and it may make it worth their while. The players those picks turn into will be cost controlled for some time and may offset Ryan's contract, or they can be fodder to trade Ryan in a cap dump when he's only got a year or two left. I personally feel that if Ottawa wants to compete for the next two/three years, it may even be worthwhile to get rid of a real blue-chip prospect to get Ryan's salary back (Dahlen or Chabot). I'm sure a deal could be worked out between Vegas and Ottawa if they want to sacrifice the future for a stab now (although who knows how good that stab can ever be when they won't spend to the cap).

palhal's right, but at this point I'd pay Vegas to take Ryan if I were Ottawa. I'd give a couple picks, including Ottawa's first round pick (not that Ottawa's done anything with their first round picks since Karlsson), and do your best to convince Vegas to take Ryan. Hopefully he ends this year with forty/fifty points this year, and with the forward core being Vegas' weakest part of the roster they may not be completely against taking him at the right price.

Under Cap Dream Team
Murray's on an ELC. Lots of Pens. They did just win the cup, so not necessarily a bad thing. Also no Pacioretty? Guys probably the best LW in the NHL, bang for buck. I feel like Benn + Seguin would be better for the second line over Neal and Malkin, and it would let you take Pacioretty over Cogliano. I would also probably take Hamonic over Vatanen, and Karlsson or Doughty over Letang.
All in all though its some pretty small and subjective changes, obviously. Good team.

I'm not going to argue the Jets aren't capable of being an above average team. I'm going to argue that's about their ceiling next year. They're an exciting young team, but if they went to the second round of the playoffs next year that would be mission accomplished, hands down a phenomenal season. Next season, they are not competing for a cup. Next season, the Jets are competing for a wild card spot and their first playoff series win since the relocation.
I'm not going to argue that the Jets aren't signing Trouba because you're right; likely, he will be resigned. In my original reply I merely stated that hypothetically, were Trouba and Chevy unable to come to terms (and stranger things have happened), this package is a good package.
And why would the Jets want a goalie? Why would they want a RHD? Why does any team continue to develop prospects in positions of strength? Because **** happens and you can never have too many prospects. Because handedness isn't end-all and injuries happen. Lines can't be perfect and sometimes you want to be able to rely on good young prospects in the farm team. And goalies are voodoo, you can't count your chickens before they hatch. Kari Lehtonens and Eddie Lacks happen, young goalies can't always repeat strong rookie performances. Besides the whole point of this trade is that you're not going to have Trouba once its done. So you get a RHD with similar upside. Obviously not enough to warrant a one-for-one in the worst of times but that what the package is for. Taken as a whole, this package could be an acceptable replacement for Trouba.

Sometimes you take what you can get bones. If the Jets are having trouble resigning Trouba this is a damn good package. Zboril is a fantastic RHD prospect that's more ready than most defensemen his age. Subban and DeBrusk are quality guys who may be able to jump in later if need be, and you can never have too many blue-chip prospects. What if another roster player begins demanding term or money the team can't afford? Debrusk and Zboril are also automatically expansion protected, which adds another layer of value. And this guy threw in a first round pick? Realistically that's between 10-20 overall.
You haven't been here long if you think this is the worst package for Trouba. Honestly what's this about top 6 forward/ top 4 LHD? If you think the Jets are that close to competing (the only logical explanation for scoffing at a prospect package this good) you're delusional. And if you think Chevy's going to do better for you than what Rosa's offered here, you're delusional.

Hudler then?
If no team is going to give him term, signing with the Hawks could still be the best business decision. Playing on the first line and having a good bounce back year would go a long way for him to get a good contract during next year's free agency, potentially with Vegas.

Gaudreau to Bruins and Vesey
Even if the trade is fair in a vacuum, Calgary has plenty of centre depth, especially if they want to start playing Bennett at centre like he should be. Krejci will push a good player into a role he shouldn't play. McQuaid likely doesn't have a roster spot since Wotherspoon has been given a QO; it just seems like a cap dump. Finnally, this adds nearly 10 million dollars to the Flames, which even accounting for some AHL burying may make it difficult to get Monahan on the type of long-term deal Flames fans would like. Take McQuaid out of the trade and hold some salary for Krejci, then the Flames may be able to do this trade.

Agree with LeafsFan; but I just can't see either of these teams trading their 1st round pick in this offseason. I'm sure many Leaf and Oil fans are optimistic they'll perform better next year, but even the most delusional fans should know the likelihood of another bottom 5 finish is high enough to not consider that trade.

Pens add speed, talent, grit, experience
Have you been paying attention to this year's trades? If Spaling and Polak can get two seconds Buffalo is going to expect a second for Franson and Foligno, who are great depth players. Franson is especially for his PK strength. I can't see the trade happening without the second round pick. Also Wideman's fine as long as he isn't against top lines (and you aren't paying him +5 million), in a market so starved for defensemen he will command some commodities. If the Pens are looking for help down the stretch, it's not inconceivable they pay a little extra to get Drouin now.
Precedents have been set; this is an expensive market this year.

I like the explanations, good high-effort post. I think you're close to some pretty good trades, especially compared to most of this site. As a Calgary fan, I will say that Calgary doesn't want a defenseman in return for Wideman. We have prospects ready to take his place, which has been logjammed all season. Take away Lovejoy and I'd still make the trade; even getting rid of half of Wideman's cost would be great for the Flames who are looking to sign Monahan and Gaudreau long-term.
