Thoughts about next season this far into playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Key phrase: giving Barrie away. I don't have a problem with people trading him, but a 3rd? That's insulting. Perennial 50 point defensemen don't grow on trees.</div></div>
Fair enough. I guess my point is neither do guys who score on about a 50 goal pace, which Kane has through his regular season and playoffs for us (with emphasis on the goal a game in the playoffs of course). In fact they are more rare. I'd like to trust we could get way more value for Barrie, but I guess I am putting forward what I think Holland might end up doing since he isn't the most creative with these kinds of cap-related deals...if Holland knows he needs to dump cap to sign Kane, I think he might be a bit brash about it and get low value. But here's hoping not - would love a 2nd and a decent prospect for Barrie, could be possible.

I don't want to, but if the only option to get under the cap while keeping Kane and most other pieces is trading Barrie, I'm doing that. Kane is a bigger piece than Barrie to the team. And if Barrie nets a better return than the 3rd I put, that's great!

Is it actually starting this season? I figured it was a 22-23 starting contract, and that it's just listed wrong here. Most ELC's signed rn are being done that way no?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shylo_Moxii</b></div><div>well considering you basically got Dadonov for basically nothing lol. are you complaining?</div></div>
Yeah, because why take on his cap when the Oil can use it to try to resign a better winger in Kane? Giving up any assets to do that rather than resigning the better player you have is a bad idea.

Playoff Lines Wishful Thinking
Keith and Bouch have been absolutely demolishing at 5v5 goals for/against lately. I hope they stick with that. Nurse-Ceci have been good, and Kulak-Barrie is a nice compliment imo.

Canucks Offseason
Benson is probably moving on, for very little or perhaps even no QO. But there is no sense in the Oil taking on any cap in a trade for him.

I don't watch the Penguins much, but I'm stunned Rodrigues with 42 points is not slated to be on your preferred 12 man forward roster. What makes you leave a player producing that much off? Just curious.

Realistic Playoff Team Next Year
The top 9 forward group would be really nicely rounded out with Giroux. Looks like there will be a decent amount of pressure on Sanderson to perform well quickly in that top 4 D if this is to be a playoff pushing club though.

Competing Sharks not what I want because Bedard
Oil need a cheap goalie to hopefully tandem with Skinner next year (hoping Smith retires or is just injured). Reimer would be better as a vet to go with Skinner, but Hill or Kahkonen would be a decent and inexpensive bet. Oil really need that to fit under the cap. I would hope Holland gets the brains to call SJ about the three headed goaltending monster in SJ, so odd they kept 3 at the deadline, but I guess they will all still have decent value come summer.

I feel like some GM will have had a terrible powerplay this past season, or lose their current PP QB, and feel he's worth something to them.

I think Sanheim's cost is more like Broberg and a 1st. Sanheim has been a top pairing guy.

I want a Reimer Koski tandem. But that would be too hard on Mike Smith, Holland probably feels.
Also Reimer and Skinner as a tandem next season would be okay, and nice and cheap.

You'd think SJ will be trading a goalie now on this carousel...won't keep Reimer, Hill and Kahkonen. I'd be happy with any of them if Kenny can wake up and do it.

Deadline
I think that's fair from the Oil. Tullio has well overperformed his draft slot, but young RW is not something the Oil are lacking with Pulju and Yamo. Paul would be a great add to the bottom 6 in place of Shore/Archibald, bigger and more skilled for the playoffs.

If you do this, Ken Holland will immediately trade for Mike Smith as Vegas' goalie of the future. Just you wait.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oilersguy</b></div><div>seems like it is a bunch of relatively young guys that really developed that aspect of the game yet</div></div>
Pretty common I think. I know McDavid was in the low 40's for a few seasons before dragging his % up near 50%, and now finally he's up at about 53%.

what else
Nothing much probably, if Kassian or Barrie aren't moved, no room to get another goalie (which there ideally should be, with Smith probably likely to be out fairly often now). I'd think Holloway makes that 3rd line next year before Lavoie does though.

Nah, Oil finally draft and develop a goalie for the first time since Devan Dubnyk. And he's really cheap next year. Skinner isn't going anywhere.

Fair. He's been bad. Was good up until his outings this season haha. So who knows, true the options are few. I feel there was a window to get Jarry out of Pit last season...but now he's been pretty amazing (save for last night, thanks for that Jarry).

Samo is not near the level it takes to even start one of those conversations. There's UFA goalie options next year but without Keith retiring it'll be tough for the Oilers to get too aggressive. Skinner is also no longer waiver exempt next year and Smith is under contract which complicates the situation further.</div></div>
Haha, this why I said young"er", compared to Smith lol. Thinking more of a Varlamov, with hopefully a short extension.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rpain</b></div><div>Niemelainen likely has a 3rd pairing ceiling. Samorukov still has top 4 potential. You give Niemalainen the call-up now in the short term for the safer bet based on recent play but long term Samorukov is the guy you're betting on.</div></div>
With Broberg and Nurse looking pretty good on the left side for a long time, I'd honestly be open to trading either Nemo or Samo if the fit was there (once the D is healthy again with Nurse and Keith back). However, I'd expect Samo to get a higher return. It just depends on what the target is and what cost is needed, really.
The nice thing is, both guys are not likely to play any higher than 3LD (in a healthy lineup) over the next couple of seasons. I think Nemo and Samo will both be competent to do that. So, in a way, if Samo is worth a lot more to help somewhere else in a trade (i.e. getting a bonafide starter), and Nemo can be a competent 3LD/7D option starting next season (playing interchangeably with Keith and Broberg behind Nurse on that left side), then maybe that is the best overall move.
I don't think Nemo turns much of a needle value wise getting close to acquiring a true, younger starting goalie. But Samo might.
