if you thought Kuzy's indifference, Backstrom's health issues, and Ovi's painful lack of speed and skating ability were frustrating last year don't worry! Johansen combines all of that into one player instead of three!

Agreed. This is not the direction the caps need to go in. Mid to mid and losing cap space is a bad idea. And we’re giving up a very young and useful depth player in Malenstyn. You could convince me on a Jensen - Mikheyev swap, but the caps do not retain without significant compensation to do so.

2023-24 Season Thread
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>perrystreett</b></div><div>1. Where do we expect the team and GMBM to go from here? At a weird crossroads that I think is uncommon with the amount of cap space that should open up, enough young talent with some veteran talent and leadership, if we add a couple of good pieces we could potentially make a run but we would have to jeopardize our future even more. Coming into the season and at the trade deadline I wanted to solely focus on the future and sell as much as we could. Now, I want to add two top 6 forwards and try to compete.
2. Marner is my most wanted target we desperately need high end skill, I also would love a Stevie reunion for his speed and flexibility
3. I did not watch as many games this year as I normally do, do we think this Ovi is here to stay? (Lazy and out of shape imo, almost impossible to create offense or drive play when you're standing still the entire game). I see two options for him, 1. Winning still drives him and he'll get in shape and come back better or 2. He won his cup all he cares about now is passing gretzky. Unfortunately I think its the latter.
4. Based on Strome's comments about how much work oshie puts into playing and Oshie staying out last on the ice for a goodbye, do we think he retires? I hate to see another caps legend go out not on their own terms like backy but I think its best for the team and his day to day life.
5. I like most of the pieces on our D and thought AA played well at times in this series, I think our best bet would be moving Jensen if there are any takers and upgrade with a more physical and responsible RHD</div></div>
1. I expect GMBM to keep on the "retool around Ovi/Carlson" train but be slightly more aggressive than he has been the last two years due to increased cap and honestly better assets to move. I think that's the right strategy to take. There's going to be pain when Ovi retires no matter what and full on tear-downs aren't exactly the guaranteed successes they once were.
2. Marner and Ehlers for me. Laine/Norris/Zegras are the next tier
3. Don't think he's lazy or really "out of shape" so much as he's 38 and had basically two competent teammates on offense in Strome and Carlson. It just happens, we need to adapt around it
4. I think it's 60/40 right now he retires. Also think GMBM will be a little more forceful after how the Backstrom stuff played out
5. I would like some more physicality on D as well but the problem is that they don't have a 2nd driver behind Carlson. Fehervary and to a lesser extent Sandin are fine complimentary top-4 guys but I really think they need a true Orlov replacement. Ideally would be an RD but get the BPA and work around the handedness later

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>perrystreett</b></div><div>Any particular reason you don't want Stevie back? I think he is a solid top 6 forward with speed which we definitely need. If you think he will be too expensive I get that.</div></div>
We have no Stone or Eichel to pair him with, I think he will get paid line-driving money and I'm very hesitant that he's that kind of player outside of a very friendly setup in Vegas. I also do think there's an element in sports of "been there, done that" where once a team/player move on from one another, it is very rare that both sides want a reunion and even rarer for that reunion to turn out well.

The team needs to learn puck control and offensive zone pressure with crisp clean passing and cycling and creativity.
The Caps suck in all that.
Ovie was used to playing with better players in those departments.

I believe Seattle would decline that trade. Daccord's been a real find for the Kraken and finally provided them with some stability in net. I doubt the Kraken are going to be all that willing to swap him and his bargain deal for another pricey goalie who hasn't lived up to his contract with Grubauer still around.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>17th is a late first you are on the 2nd half of the 1st round.
On top of it, it's a weak draft.</div></div>
That is a pretty ignorant take. Being the 1st pick in the 2nd half of the 1st round is not late. It is smack dab in the middle of the round. On to of that this draft class is just as strong as most other years until around pick 25, that's when the falloff begins. If you are getting someone like Brandsegg-Nygard or Jiricek at #17 that's on par with recent 17th OA's like Kemell, Bolduc, Reichel, and Krebs.

ReVamp for Next Year
From the Caps side, earlier in the year I probably would have said yes, but I like what I've seen from Alexeyev in the last half of the season. Makes me less bullish on going out and getting another LHD this offseason, especially if we have to give up that much.

Caps counter with Jensen and a 3rd for Letang, Dowd and a 2nd for Malkin, or Oshie and a 2nd for Crosby. Take your pick.

The new face of the franchise
While I like the ideas of these trades, Caps are in no position to trade their next 3 1st round picks....
In my opinion:
1. Zegras is just another Kuzy - GREAT skill, but inconsistent. I'm not sure I would be willing to give up the asking price.
2. I think with the recent play of the Caps LHD, Chychrun might not have a spot...Fehervary has played outstanding and so has AA. And the Caps won't be trading Sandin. Maybe there is a fit on the right side, but Carberry has said he likes defenders playing on traditional true side. Plus, I would rather just wait and see if the Caps can sign Chychrun in the next offseason if their is a need.
3. Marner would be awesome - no doubt about it. And personally, I would think about that trade from a Caps perspective. But I don't think Caps management would ever do that trade (specifically giving up Wilson, their next captain, who they just signed to a long-term deal).
I think the Caps would be willing to trade this year's first (and might consider McM along with other players/prospects) in a package for a top 6 winger, but I would think the following are off limits:
Ovi, Strome, Wilson, Carlson, Fehervary, Miro, Leonard.

Can't see the caps moving Beck (with how well the fourth line plays together) for this package. Maybe if it were Beck and a Fourth for a Second they might do that

Playoff Lines Game 1
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NoVaSpartan</b></div><div>Honestly can't see Leonard signing at this point, feels like there's too much running against it. Neither Smith nor Perreault have left BC yet, he could go back for another year to finish the job he started this year, but most importantly I just kinda don't see a spot for him. They won't bump Patches or Oshie out of the lineup, NAK and Malenstyn have been so effective with Dowd that they're likely safe, and I can't see someone like Milano getting the boot in favor of Leonard. Think we're going to have to wait another year to see Leonard (and I will be acquiring a Leonard 50th anniversary jersey no matter what my wallet has to say about the matter)</div></div>
Yeah I'd agree with this as well.
I also hope either Jensen and/or Sandin can return...both seem close-ish, surprisingly. Sandin skated yesterday for a long time apparently and Jensen was around the facility (unsure if he actually skated).
I really have been pleasantly surprised with Malenstyn - he was probably the most notable skater last night (and NAK). While he won't put up many points, I see him being a staple for the 4th line moving forward

Absolutely huge - pumped to see meaningful hockey this time of year
I will say - I have hopes for next year. I really think, with the right moves, the caps will be contenders. Optimistic? Yes. But this year showed that the young guys are ready - with a top 4 defender and a top 6 winger (easier said than done I know), this team would be legit. They will have the cap space to make those moves and with the way they have drafted, they should be comfortable with moving some draft picks...

Either he get dealt or he re-signs. Or he gets dealt and re-signs there. The likelihood of him hitting free agency is low.. very low.</div></div>
That's fine. Chychurn is good, he's not worth the trade though.
