Blockbuster In Buffalo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DefenseFirst</b></div><div>Stars are robbing everyone</div></div>
I think every team here gets a little bit of something. The Stars clear some cap space and effectively turn Seguin into Schenn, while shedding a **** ton of salary. But Buffalo's made some real strides, and if Giroux and Debrincat makes Ottawa a contender on paper, I don't see why Tarasenko and Seguin couldn't do the same for Buffalo here. They'd get some quality veteranship, get out of Skinner's contract and they wouldn't have so much pressure on Tuch and Thompson to be a franchise forward core on their own.
St. Louis to me is the closest thing to a loser but I view them the same way as Minnesota and Nashville; good? Hell yes, but Tarasenko and Schenn are players that are honestly the type to do more harm than good and Tarasenko in particular probably wants out anyway; if they can shed that salary, to me it'd be realistic to assume they'd survive Jeff Skinner's contract. Personally I think it's Buffalo- a Seguin bounceback like he's showcased shortly into the year here could be huge for Buffalo and Dallas would be more than willing to sell him off. And St. Louis getting Benn also adds a bit of grit that could really complement somebody like O'Reilly, especially since Kyrou realistically can be the real umph of that line.
Usually you're talking about a gritty RW, good 2-way center and speedy, talented LW; having the inverse as a 1st line could benefit St. Louis supremely by virtually guaranteeing some mismatches against most opponents. It worked out really well for Boston, having a do-it-all 1st line, but it is risky I'll certainly agree there. If Benn underperforms like most would expect him to, it'd be ghastly but if you're St. Louis running face first into the end of a contending window... you're willing to take big risks. Not saying it's the *best* move but it's one teams in their position make historically.

Great for both
You can't underestimate Eichel's value as a player, but even at 50% retention, Tampa still sits well over the cap. Secondly, how much does Eichel really help Tampa Bay? Over recent years he's been injured as often as he's underperformed and you're selling off a player you perceive as a franchise talent for two late 1st rounders and two depth forwards that don't begin to fix your problems. Somehow, both sides manage to lose this trade. Tampa because with their cap situation, they'd probably end up losing Eichel anyways through a trade to dump salary unless they sold off McDonagh, along with losing two 1st round picks they're going to need in order to extend their contending window; just look at the Pens' prospect situation.
I regret to inform you bud, the time to sell Eichel off for a return even remotely like this was 3 years ago when you gave up on O'Reilly and Kane, and when the Lightning were still playoff chokers desperate to be taken seriously. Between the poor reputation Terrance Pegula has built for the Sabres in general, paired with the fact that they've absolutely nuked their core, they have absolutely zero trade leverage with *anybody* in the entire league. Take a 1st round pick and a role forward and move on.

We can Finally Rebuild
Man you're making a tough ask to get rid of Karlsson at all. Especially with the cap situation Anaheim was/is in, I sincerely doubt Anaheim takes him on. Add in Donato, 2 1sts, a 2nd and a 4th and MAYBE you have something but at $11.5 million for another 6 years, after the nose-dive his production took, that's the LAST thing the Ducks need, yet another underperforming offensive defenseman. They already have Manson, Fowler and Lindholm to deal with.
I hate telling you this, but even if you sell him dirt cheap, that contract is such an immediate turn-off that you're unlikely to ever trade him unless he puts up Norris numbers this season. The only way Karlsson doesn't retire a Shark is if you buy him out, and if that IS what they do, that's still 4 years away. And to have the cap space to pull that off, you have to trade both Burns AND Vlasic, which itself would be difficult (but eons more feasible). You could absolutely package Burns with a 2nd and send him to Anaheim for a 6th or 7th to free up space, but Karlsson's a different animal dude. He's 30 with a rough injury history, the 2nd largest cap hit in the entire league for a player that hasn't had elite offensive production in years and defensive metrics among the worst of top pairing defensemen in the league, you could offer him for future considerations 1 for 1 and you'd STILL have trouble selling him off unless you retain a lot of salary.
The ONLY feasible trade I can think of is Karlsson and a 1st for P.K. Subban. At this point the Sharks management would be foolish to worry about the Karlsson contract. They'd better be more focussed on somehow signing Hertl and Meier on decent deals. As opposed to that ridiculous 8 year contract they gave to... Logan Couture? If you thought the buyer's remorse would end with Kane, Karlsson, Vlasic and Burns you my friend couldn't be more wrong. That deal will come back just as hard, if not worse.
