There is nothing you can offer to get Cole. Nothing in the system and only 1st rd picks you can offer. At this point we don`t even want Sid the Kid

UFA vets to complete top 6
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jay27</b></div><div>Idk, Stammer is great and all but I just don’t think it’s a great idea to go out and spend 10.5 a year for the next 3 years on a guy who’s 34 years old. Also I know +\~ is an archaic stat and all but has anyone else noticed that he is a ~21 on a team that has a +25 goal differential?</div></div>
He's not what he used to be and that's fine. His value is his experience and leadership more than his scoring even though that's still pretty good. He's going to teach the young group how to win and what it takes to be excellent instead of just good. This is a young team about to get younger once some other vets leave and we're going to need that "guy" that everyone in the room respects, including Suzuki. They need someone to look up to whose been there and done that and Stammer would be the absolute best chance we have at someone like that. And frankly, the only reason we'd have even a slight chance at him is because of MSL.
Yes the Habs could use a legit weapon like Reinhart or whatever but truthfully we aint going to get anyone in their prime. But I think captain, cup winner, megastar, even at his age would do wonders for the core of this group which will be the ones that lead us to the promise land if we do.
Plus all the best options for the Habs are guys who are going to want long term contracts. If Habs draft a forward this year, we'll be absolutely stacked up front for the next decade almost. We need guys for the now and short term only. Since cap space is not an issue, we can afford to go high on a short term deal for a guy like Stammer. By the time we really need cap space, he'll be gone.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jay27</b></div><div>If MTL goes out and spends nearly 15mill on veteran UFAs this year then what happens next year when they need to sign Guhle and Slafkovsky to long term contracts?</div></div>
Savard, Armia, Dvorak, Evans + cap increase should be enough. Not to mention that Anderson is likely gone one way or another. They'd be fine.
Im all for adding Stamkos at whatever number he wants as long as its short term. Toffoli will get more than that though and frankly I'd be ok with just Stamkos. Newhook deserves the other top 6 mins off the hop here IMO. Dvorak-Armia-Roy on 3rd line. Evans Gally and whoever on 4th.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MTLaveragefan</b></div><div>I disagree, I think Nic Roy will provide a lot more than that late first round pick.</div></div>
It's interesting, I'm having the same discussion in another thread with <a href="/users/Black61" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Black61</a>, He's on the opposite end of the spectrum saying Evans and a 2nd is too much, you're on the other end saying paying a 1st is justifiable, and I'm in the middle essentially lol.
Trying to merge both discussions, I'll say that a 1st rd pick would serve better trying to get a better asset. but a Evans + 2nd (and you could add other depth pieces) seems justifiable to me.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Black61</b></div><div>Ya not at that return. Hes 27 and hasnt hit 40 points till potentially this season. Not a 2c</div></div>
Not saying he's a 2C, but that he's still an improvement over Evans. and when it comes to depth players, points aren't the be all end all. Roy was instrumental for Vegas in their playoff runs with his physical play, and his ability to play anywhere in the lineup.
I really don't see why Habs wouldn't want to upgrade Evans for N.Roy... Very much a no brainer imo... N.Roy also plays the wing, so there's a ton of flexibilty too if MTL have other centers they want to use (Beck) or acquire (bring back Monahan?).

Reasonable thinking and a reasonable offer. I just think Roy is too valuable (to VGK) to move. But something will have to give that's a certainty. I have an ACGM started (it will be my first!!) that allows us to keep Roy at 4C. I'll try push that through later after I tweak it a bit more. I'll be curious of your thoughts if you get a chance to see it.

Berggren cannot play on a 4th line, it's true. Neither could Cole Caufield. Those guys need to play with other skilled players in order to have an impact.
He should be playing in the NHL, but the wings had a chance to sign Patrick Kane. There's no shame in losing your spot to Patrick Kane.

If he's worth a 3rd round pick, Josh Roy is worth a 4th!

New Third Pairing Next Year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JeffGorton</b></div><div>Habs do not want Ross Colton unless there are multiple 1st rounders in return. He is a cap dump for the Habs.</div></div>
Ross Colton is not a cap dump, but Montreal wouldn't want him.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Anus_McLeod</b></div><div>Well, you're not getting Lehkonen back, but I think you'd like Colton. <strong>I understand he's not the most exciting acquisition, but I do think he makes that team better</strong>.
Is Evans likely to extend in Montreal? If so then I could see why this wouldn't make sense.</div></div>
I don't think any rebuilding team is all that interested in taking on cap space to improve their bottom 6 C, especially given the term on Colton's contract. Montreal's hoping to get more than 25 games combined from Dvorak and Dach next season. Newhook has also started to show serious improvements at center since coming back from injury. Them, Suzuki and Evans means Montreal's unlikely to be in the market for a center who isn't either a young, true top-6 C or a guy with the potential to be that.
It doesn't really matter if Evans will be re-signed are not or what it would cost Montreal in a trade, Colton doesn't make sense as a trade target.

Draft day capital
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MTLaveragefan</b></div><div>TBH - the top 6 is such a toss up especially before the end of the playoffs, the Memorial cup and the WJC - that a trade up will probably be to secure a very specific player that would be available :
ex:
CLB picks 4th, ARI picks 5th and MTL picks 6th.
Celebrini/Demidov/Lindstrom go 1, 2, 3.
Lets say Eiserman is available at 4 and MTL and ARI REAALLLY wants him, while CLB not so much. Then I could see CLB accepting a deal from MTL to leap frog ARI to secure Eiserman.
It's going to be a draft floor trade for sure.</div></div>
Yeah that's the exact scenario I could see that trade happening. Even then, though, if Columbus is on the clock and Levshunov is available, we should take him. The only RD in the system with top-4 potential is Jiricek, so that would be both insurance and a long-term upgrade on Gudbranson/Severson.
But, if Columbus does make that trade, and the next picks are Eiserman to MTL at 4 and Levshunov to ARI at 5, I'd still be happy taking the extra draft capital to nab Catton at 6. Definitely going to be interesting.

Long term deals for Necas and Jarvis
CAR is stuck with KK as their 13th forward. Nashville isn't interested.
MTL will offer Kidney for R Suzuki 1 for 1 but the picks are unnecessary and we can't afford to be shipping quality young RD, even if some impatient fans keep bombarding the boards with Barron trades.
Moving a LHD is a different story; Harris, Engstrom, maybe even Struble (although I'd rather keep him) but no RHD until we actually have some established in the N.

If the Sharks fall to 3 and Celebrini and Levshunov go 1st and 2nd, I’d be ok with a trade back to 6 while picking up Barron, the Winnipeg 1st, and maybe another pick (a 2nd?).

Love to see Matheson and Savard traded but reality is that one of them likely stays as the grizzled vet of the group. That's likely to be Savard since they have less depth at RHD

I guess you haven’t noticed but he's already reached that top D spot. I feel some fans have turned on Guhle a bit lately but it’s completely unwarranted. Sure he makes some mistakes but the kid is only 22 playing top pairing on a rebuilding team. Imagine what he’ll look like at 25 when this team is ready to contend.
