Trading up at draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Alfie11</b></div><div>The highest you might be able to get is #7 from the Sharks if they make the wrong decision regarding their future and decide they’re still competitive. That would cost you a guy like Konecny though, maybe even more. Top 10 picks are weighted extremely heavily, once the pick is locked in at a certain spot it has more value than “a 1st.” Looking at #7 you can see guys like Clarke, Wallstedt, Johnson, Eklund maybe being available (top pair D, elite starter, first line forwards) and guys like that generally bust less often. A good prospect and a mid-1st isn’t gonna jump you close to the top 5.</div></div>
If I remember correctly, there is a significant drop off after 7-8. So I see your point in that 13 is worth a lot less than 5-7.

This is a good point. Sounds like they would hang up unless Coot's name was thrown out. Which would cause Philly fans to burn the city down

Like I said in description, this is only the scenario if Chuck can't find help on trade market. This would help if Clarke is NHL ready now. Which I doubt he is.
I def don't anticipate this happening, I was just curious what the fellow capfriendly'ers thought the price of moving up would be.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ajp_18</b></div><div>After a little bit of quick research the only time in the salary cap era where the 5th OA pick was traded at the draft was in 2008. The Trade was 5th OA for 7th OA, 68th OA and a 2nd in 2009. That’s 2 spots for a 2nd and a 3rd. You’ll need to come to the table with more for Columbus to move back 8 spots.</div></div>
Damn this is a good point. That much for two spots. So maybe Flyers need to trade two firsts and an A prospect to get anywhere close?

You do make a good point, they don't have a great prospect pool, so maybe it'll cost Flyers another prospect.

<strong>13th</strong> overall pick, a top-9 center (Frost) is a steep price to pay to move up 8 spots. Maybe change the 5th to a third. But I still feel that's an overpayment

You think there's any chance Patrick or Frost get converted to W? I remember Chuck saying Frost is a center, but I just don't see one of these two centering a fourth line. And with the "Patrick unhappy" rumors swirling, this won't make things better.

With the buyout money and a new $4m contract he'd actually get over $6m next season and over $5m for the second year. Plus it helps the team cap wise, meaning they'd be more competitive. It's what The Caps did with Orpik a few seasons back. Traded him to The Avs who bought him out, re-signed with The Caps at about $1m.</div></div>
Holy **** this is genius, why aren't more teams/players doing this? It sounds like there has to be a rule against this lol.

Even if that isn't sustainable, Seattle wont take German Rubstov who will probably never be an NHL player over him and Philly won't have to pay for them to want to take JVR</div></div>
If JVR keeps playing the way he's been playing, I don't think the Flyers would have to entice Seattle at all. But, we all know how streaky he is. I suspect that continues this year, and the Flyers may have to sweeten the deal. However, I think the only other realistic option for Seattle is Ghost or NAK, and as much as I like both of those guys, I think they are replaceable. Unless Ghost gets back to 2016 form.
Totally agree with you on Rubtsov, I think his shot is done. And I don't see Seattle wasting their pick on him.

Just curious, if Flyers protect:
Coots, G, Jake, Hayes, TK, Lindblom and Patty
Provy, Sanheim, Myers
Hart
What would be Seattle's "better options"? I really like Laughts but since he's a UFA, Flyers probably won't protect him.
Also, what do you think the Flyers would need to add to get Seattle to take JVR?

Maybe I'm biased since I'm a Flyers fan, but I think that pick should be a 4th or a 5th. Montour is not that great. And I know Ghost hasn't looked great either, but I think his value is higher than what this trade shows.

Tampa is going to lose someone for cheap No way around it
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Ive posted similar a few times, adding a couple of mid level prospects, like Isaac Ratcliffe and LD Linus Hogberg.
Although I wouldn't put Johnson in minors, the Flyers need some speed, so I'd put Johnson at 3C, Patrick at 4C, and Frost needs key offensive time, so I put him at 1RW, moving voracek to 3RW and farabee to 3LW, JVR to 4LW.
Once Cernak signs he'll be in the Laughton neighbourhood, so taking Johnson is saving them 5mil in cap, but they still need to move a killorn or gourde (5mil or so).
Does Philly want Johnson at 5mil for 4 years? Probably not, but they need speed and that's the price for a 23 yr old RD in Cernak.
Im a fan of this deal and think that Johnson might waive his NTC to go to a contender, rather than a rebuilding club. And while TB shouldn't be looking to move a cheapish, young RD they'll have to make some moves soon with less than a month until the season starts. And they're not plumb with tons of prospects and teams don't want picks if theyre in a win now as enticements to take salaries and the players they want to move have NTC, which means they probably wont want a rebuilding club. (TB is presently 2mil over cap without cirelli and cernak signed).</div></div>
Yeah, I have the Flyers buying him out, only because of flat cap issues. But I agree that he is still a serviceable player, maybe they take that route after a year or so. If that's the case, they are going to have to shed more cap. Not sure how they would go about doing that. What do you think?

Also this still isn’t great for Tampa because they need about 10+ mil cap relief where here they only gain 2.7 and lose a much needed top 4 defender. They’d also probably decline.</div></div>
True, not ideal for the long term, but they gain a good, young D man. I worry that he would get plucked by Seattle the following summer though.
What would you do to clear up their cap situation?

If Ghost has a decent year this year, it's possible. But my guess is that the Flyers would have to give up picks in order for Seattle to take Ghost. There will most likely be better players available to them.

I think a team that would want to take a flyer on him to see if he just needs a change on Scenery would work. I was going to say VAN but they got schmidt. He will play and if he exceeds expectations and returns to the ghost we know maybe we trade EG, Highly unlikely but the Flyers have a lot flexibility with this,</div></div>
Totally agree. So many teams are cash strapped with the flat cap and are not willing to take the chance imo. I do not envy Chuck or any other GM for that matter lol. Maybe the Ghost trade will happen during the 2021 season if a team loses a LD to LTIR. If that's the case, maybe Chuck will be able to get a decent return.
