Retreat with lilmore patience required
Too many chefs spoil the... In the Leafs case to many superstar egos ruins the room!
I expect this team to play complete 60 min-games from now on, and I believe they will still make the playoffs; but, I also would understand with this much turnover, it will take a lot of coaching to get them all on the same page.
Yes!
Losing Matthew is a losing a superstar, but in turn, if you look at all my trades as a whole (viewing the lines I created)... I did balance the defence, and the offence is better too, meaning more spread out (cap-wise) aswell.
This team is one I would put complete faith in to win next... as a team. Not only that, we can restock (four 1st-round, a 2&3rd round pick coming back), therefore our development system to sustain winning!
For anyone who challenges me regarding whether or not Arizona would complete this trade, I say this. NO WAY Arizona, don't take this deal... Matthews will sell seats and season tickets holders pay the bills and more! He will win hardware too.

I prefer to see it this way... He's offensively minded. If you give him a reliable stay at home right shooting partner he's an Allstar. Paul Coffey was a **** defender too, but also was a Hall-of-Famer because he didn't need to play defence so much. Reilly needs an A. Larsson type partner. NOT DUMBA!

My point is more or less a good Dman is a good Dman. If we have a strong left and a weaker right it will still balance out. Dermott playing the right does not bother me either.</div></div>
If you are referring to the" hurry up and get squashed in the 1st round race" I totally agree with you... we should keep him because without him I don't see how that happens.

Sorry Willie all the best
Something has to change.
This trade is painful to swallow, I would rather not lose Nylander; but, I also can't stand watching the Leafs get deflated by lack of defence any longer. I would imagine Dallas feels the same way about Klingberg, but unlike the Leafs they are desperate for offence.
Leafs WIN defence Lose offence
Stars WIN offence Lose defence
Win-Win or Lose-Lose either way its a hockey deal folks!

Approach to Trade Deadline?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leaf_fan_74</b></div><div>And now?</div></div>
Three weeks since I started this thread, Honestly, my feeling of how to approach this years trade deadline has not changed. Here are a couple of questions I consider as I try to answer this question if I were hypothetically the GM of this team.
Are they playing well?
Will making the playoffs be an accomplishment? What does it mean not to make them like Tampa a few years back didn't?
If they make the playoffs, do they have a chance to win it all?
What is the cost to improve, and do we have the resources to spend?
What is the opportunity cost of each: buying or selling?
Each of us will have our answers to these questions. No doubt!
I have been a Leafs fan long enough to go from the naive-optimist "we'll-get'em-next-year" fan to a highly bitter skeptic waiting for the hockey gods to crush our hopes again just one more time. Funny, if you are the former and don't believe it will happen to you... go and check out Steve Dangle's old LFR's in comparison to the ones he is posting these days. Let me save you some time, what you will see is he who was once known for his Ra-Ra super optimistic love for this team, converted a too and sheer lack of desire to watch games of an organization he literally makes a living off. I understand what he feels twice over being a decade older and having seen this show before.
Fact is a locker room full of SuperStar egos, does not a great team make!
Sell all UFA's and furthermore if we don't want to continue like this we must consider trading one of the 11mil salaries in the offseason.
Final Question... What's more important, team hardware, or an individual of the team getting hardware?

When the opposition forechecking puts pressure on a defender, backhand plays are way less controllable i.e., successful than forehand plays. I don't care how good you are!

You clearly have your own opinion and good on you. I agree about Barrie... and, if we don't get a 1st rounder for him before the deadline, I would say we lost the Kadri trade. Albeit, I disagree about Muzzin, however, this is not to say Muzzin holds no value for us, more that, adding him doesn't fix the right side and complicates the left side substantially shrinking Dermott and Sandin development real estate.

Nutivaara, Markus seems like a good player for the Jackets...shoots left though. Why would they want to trade him? I'm not put off by your valuation here, but this seems like the sort of player teams would want to keep. 2 thumbs up for the out-of-box thinking though.

But Brodie is another left shooting defenseman. So not like that would have been the answer to our defence either.

2) Any coach (except Babcock) would play Matthews 20 minutes +. And ironically perhaps, Matthews has become our best defensive forward this year, so I don't mind seeing him more.
3) What character players?? There aren't so many on the team. We have Muzzin, and he was on the ice most of the time tonight.
I don't like his tendency to experiment during important games (e.g. Holl as the starter in overtime, playing 7D for no reason in a game we can't afford to lose, and so on), and the defensive game is still much of a work in progress. But let's give him the benefit of the doubt until the end of the season.</div></div>
It don't matter how you slice it, he isn't good enough and the 112 point pace people are quoting was from 3 games ago... Losing 2 of those. Dubis better act fast because the heat is rising.
