I don't know anything about this player other than what I gleaned reading his stats over the past 5 seasons.
Why are you so excited about him and why are we paying so much?

Necas for Matheson
I would recommend the Habs keep Matheson in place of Necas.
One player had 62 points last season and the other was a forward.

Playoffs 2025
I don't think a line of Suzuki, Caufield, Necas makes sense.
Necas is all about speed & skill, not using his body to create time and space for his linemates.
Necas would do really well on a line where he can be the highest skill player and someone else is digging the puck out of the corners.

I don't believe the OP here understands the nuance of Offseason LTIR carrying over to the start of the regular season vs In-season LTIR. If he did, he would never trade for Carey Price.

Ok. Well if it was unfair, Canucks fans would let me know. Just because the Habs get the best player in the deal, doesn't mean it's unfair.
1) No one knows if Barron puts all the pieces together next year
2) Players picked around 26 have gone on to have HOF careers
This is a fair deal all around.

That's a silly take. 50% of the defenders in the league got their start playing for bottom 16 teams. Are you saying they are all AHL guys because the teams that gave them their start were in the bottom half of the league?

The deciding factor for me is how much longer this losing streak goes on. I believe strongly that the Habs want to be competitive next year.
Dach has not even truly arrived yet at 23, Byfield had his first good season at 21. Let's split the difference and say Lindstrom doesn't help the Habs really until age 22. That's 4 years! You wanna lose for another 3-4 seasons?

I just saw a legit Canucks fan propose a Hronek trade to the Habs for the Winnipeg pick and a 2nd. Barron is better than a late 2nd, especially for a team that wants to be competitive next year.
I think if you look at the comparables around the league for 22 year old defenders, you will find that not many had 94 NHL games at his age.
I understand how you came to that conclusion, but that logic is flawed. NHL defenders are only a "known commodity" after about 300 NHL games.

My To early attempt at this
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MONSTER1974</b></div><div>I think between Mailloux and Reinbacher, we are already set for a 2nd pairing d-man.
However, if KH sees a minute eating monster of a first pairing RD in Reinbacher, then maybe Hronek looks good on a second pairing.
Things just don’t seem to match up well though.
I think we need more of a shutdown RD to play with Hutson, provided we play Guhle & Reinbacher on the top pairing.
If Hutson & Reinbacher are a duo, I’m not sure Hronek is the guy you want on your 1st pairing with Guhle to try and counter the opposition’s best.</div></div>
I agree with the questions that come out when trying to project the future Habs. At the same time, I simply don't believe a team can win in the playoffs with a bunch of 20-25 year old defenders. I think you want a couple of 29-33 year old guys who can keep calm and lead the charge.
While I like Mailloux & Reinbacher's future and believe they both will be really good defenders, depth is important, not just in case of injuries, but in the sense of creating internal competition.
If Reinbacher becomes a top pair guy, let it be because he beat out Hronek & Mailloux (and possibly Guhle) for the job.
If Mailloux becomes a 2nd pair defender, let it be because he beat out Hronek.
If Hutson is gonna be on PP1, let it be because he beat out Matheson...
Personally I would love to see a pair of Matheson & Hronek out there. I think the transition play would be really fun to watch!
Next year we could expect:
Matheson Hronek
Hutson Guhle
Xhekaj Savard
Struble Harris
and we should trade Barron & Kovacevic

Any idea what Hronek wants in salary? If his expectations are reasonable, I can see the Habs getting interested, especially if they decide to trade Barron & Savard.

Trading Down
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lancebmx</b></div><div>I don't think the Flames would do it. They will still get a really good player at #9. Anderson's cap hit is what kills this deal. They have less than 20M in cap space and need to rebuild the defence. They also don't have an in open spot at forward on the roster for him really. So the current and future cap implications would kill this deal. Also value wise, it would take more than dropping 4 spots to dump Anderson. The player they might want at #5 could very well be there at #9.
After this season Anderson might be easier to dump to a team as his salary will be lower than his cap hit. This season he makes $7M, $5M next season and $3.5M in his final season.</div></div>
I mean... dropping down 4 spots is different when it's 5 to 9 and 37 to 42. Any rebuilding team would jump at a chance to get a higher quality prospect. This is all moot though because Hughes would NEVER offer this. I mean c'mon, you get like 2 or maybe 3 chances to pick top 5 during a rebuild. You're really gonna give that up to dump a player that you could just as easily buy out?

Why not. You think his play at the WC is indicative of future success at the NHL level?
IMO this deal falls apart because no GM in history gives up a 5OA pick to dump cap. What a silly idea.
The Flames would jump in this in 1 second flat and Hughes would need to be fired immediately.

Free to play in Free Agency
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>I don’t disagree, and personally I like Evans game but teams tight to the cap would rather pay more at the deadline than to use up that space in the off season potentially limiting themselves.</div></div>
True, but a team looking for a player like Evans will often overpay in free agency both in cap and term. In this case one of those teams could "audition the player" at lower cap and then resign him at their leisure.
I see players get way too much money in free agency every year, which is why I feel this could happen in the offseason.

Thanks. I would add a 4th or something like that on the Habs side to get it done sooner if possible. I hear you, but some teams may have an opening at 3C where they feel Evans can slot in at a bargain.

Maybe Carolina should continue to do the same thing and expect different results. Let the analytics group make all the personnel decisions. Maybe it will work next year?
I really believe that there is no analytics stat for how hard a player is going to compete in the playoffs. How they are going to react to being cross checked, slew footed, speared, and just plain punched in the face.
The Hurricanes could use some of what David Savard has, even if you don't believe it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>Avs decline. They're unlikely to spend that on a 4C and if they do spend that kind of money in the bottom 6 they'd be more likely to re-sign Trenin and keep their 2nd to whit....they also won't likely be giving up one of the few draft assets they have left for Evans. Whether he's worth a 2nd is debatable but not to the Avs imo. Decent player is not in dispute and the Habs might get it from somebody. He'd also almost certainly require more money the following season and the Avs wouldn't have anything spare with the likes of Rants, Georgie and LOC to re-sign ahead of him.</div></div>
Fair analysis, thanks for sharing!
