<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vinny82</b></div><div>Sure metabolism plays a factor in how people gain weight I am not denying that, however everyone has a base TDEE they need for maintenance which accounts for metabolism. For example, a 5'11 165 lb male athlete training 2x per day needs roughly 3500 calories per day just to maintain weight at 165. In order to gain steadily 1-1.5 lbs a week they need 3800-4000 per day, 28,000 per week, and someone with a higher metabolism should be taking in over 4000 per day. Some people just under estimate just how much they actually need to eat to hit 4000 calories per day, especially when eating "clean" as people like to call it. 4000 calories per day is an actual insane amount of food when you are talking about grilled chicken, beef, rice, fruit and veggies.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vinny82</b></div><div>I can assure you that is bro science. Its calories in vs calories out and focusing on taking in enough protein and carbs for his activity level. The Kid is not eating enough for his activity level for his body to properly recover AND build muscle if he is 163 lbs. I was 165 lbs at 5'11 at 16-17 years old playing hockey 5-6 nights a week. During college I focused on proper nutrition, compound lifting and got very serious about changing my physique. Within 2 years I was at 5'11, 205 lbs, less than 13% body fat. You can easily put on muscle at that age when you have the right nutrition. Problem is these kids are on the ice 7 nights a week + off ice training for much of their teens, throw schooling in the mix and there is literally not enough time in the day for them to figure out how to properly eat. He will most likely figure it out with the proper NHL strength training coach.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>its not bro science. You're metabolism is the number 1 factor in weight gain. Hell they did studies on runners. They tested metabolism while they trained, and while they sat on the sofa doing nothing during their rest periods to avoid over use activity.
They used the breathing test for metabolism testing. You burn the same amount of calories. It's why exercise alone will never lead to weight loss. Diet does. Everyone who ever got shredded knows that.
But at the same time if your metabolism is high.....there is nothing you can do to lower it. So it's not a calories in/out equation.
Your body has a natural metabolism, it burns, and can burn a lot. Some people are naturally skinny no matter what they eat till their metabolism slows. Those are facts. Other people can touch 1 piece of junk food and balloon. It is what it is. It's why some people struggle to gain weight and others don't.
Your ideas about what these "kids" have going on isn't true. The NCAA and Team US provide everything for these kids. I had trainers and dieticians and sports psychologists when at bowling green and that was years ago. They don't have those issues. If they need help with a diet it's given, they will help them follow it as well providing damn near anything they need.
You think just because that's how it worked for you it's how it works for all. But if you've seen someone be able to eat like crazy and not gain weight you know that's just how it is.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Just_A_Guess</b></div><div>I didn't get hooked into any protein marketing, I prefer steak & chicken.
Proteinuria would cause protein in the urine indicating kidney problems.
If he's pissing it out it would be due to kidney damage.
Excess protein gets converted into urea and discharged that way but he wouldn't be pissing out protein without kidney damage.</div></div>
Bro Science & Proteinuria... I just wanna make sure, we're still talking hockey, right?
All kidding aside I am learning a lot from this dialog. Thanks team!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kris1983</b></div><div>"Send him to the AHL because he's too small" that's probably the worst reason to send him to the AHL. He will be targeted in the AHL much more than the NHL for his size. The NHL can be a dump and chase league, but the AHL is a dump and target league, those big AHL wingers aren't looking to dump and chase, they're looking to dump and destroy.
If Lane is too small for the NHL, the Habs did him a disservice by signing him, he could have had another year in college. I expect Lane to stay in the NHL from this point forward or head overseas, never the AHL.</div></div>
Fair argument. My perspective is more about the speed of the game. Yes there are more players taking cheap shots and there's more dump and chase, but Lane will also have additional time to get out of the way.
Ultimately though, sometimes defenders need to take the hit to make the play. He's gonna need muscle to do it, or else he's just a PP specialist.

We would go out to eat, applebees what not.... He would eat 3 meals all the time. Could not gain weight.
I use to wonder how the hell his parents could afford it all. I know my couldn't. I was on the $1 McDs Double cheeseburger and jars of PB diet because it was cheap.
Some people just aren't athletes like that. You can have skill, hand eye whatever, but you just don't have the body to develop the frame due to metabolism.
Thing is when that kid got older, he ballooned as in fat. Because the metabolism slowed and his eating habits were insane.
Which is why what he really needs is just time.
Look at POJ on the penguins. He was 165lbs at 20... they say he's 185lbs today, I doubt it.. like saying Crosby is 5'11. maybe 180lbs if he's lucky.
So it took him 4 years to gain 15lbs. That might end up being that guys path and that's ok.
In the old days Defensemen were allowed to develop to 23-24 so they could gain weight. Given they were taller and 240lbs...but they were allowed to grow. Now if they are good thrown in at 20. Good for them but they need time.</div></div>
Interesting story, thanks for sharing.
I think Lane put on 8 pounds last year. It's not unreasonable to expect him to put on another 7.

Eating more protein isn't going to help. Your body can only digest so much of it and then you just pi$$ it out.
You'll waste more money than you will grown.
At 20, after years of trying it's probably high metabolism. Given he's not very tall.
Tall people can tend to have a very hard time gaining weight.</div></div>
In college he was apparently the first in and last out. He used to beat the coaches to work. His commitment to athleticism is not in question, he knows how hard he's gonna have to work.
He's just... Small. A lower body like that one is not suited to a brutal 82 games of NHL punishment. 7-10 pounds of muscle is gonna mean the world to this kid if he wants to start in MTL next season.

He is likely going to get exposed if he doesn't. Doing it too quickly can be bad for athleticism/agility/etc., causing him to have to re-learn his entire game. Even 10 lbs in one summer could be too much all at once. He looked pretty good, though. What a fun and emotionally exhausting game last night!</div></div>
Happy for the Wings and Happy the Habs keep draft position.
3 points by Jake Evans and coulda been 4 if the young man could shoot the puck at all because Lane set him up for a beauty!
I hear you about going too quick. I'd like to see him around 170 at least. I dunno if he starts in the NHL, but it's very hard to say he can't. More of a question of whether he should.

Basically, offensively, there was a lack of finishing and physically, it what does pretty much every year. People see him bigger because of his contract. He is a 0.45-0.5 ppg player with 2.5 hits/game. This year was a down year yes, but fans need to stay rational and let him bounce back.</div></div>
When Caufield's scoring dried up, he found a way to help the team by passing and forechecking. Anderson does not have the hockey sense to play for MSL. We can beat around the bush for hours and make all kinds of excuses for him. He has been spiralling since MSL asked him to play a game that is moving too fast for him. Time to let him go.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>I'm all for keeping Matheson, but the next General (Markov's nickname) he is not. Markov ran one of the league's best PP for YEARS, and as soon as he was gone, the Habs PP has sucked and hasn't been the same since...
Not only was Markov one the best PP players, but he also literally made the careers of multiple of his D partners (Komisarek, Souray, Streit, etc.). Matheson isn't even in the same ballpark as Markov.
As for your thread, I think you should only pick one of Monahan or Stephenson (and you can make a solid case for either, but I would take Stephenson). Tbh, if the Habs are going to target a Vegas free agent, it should be Marchessault. I didn't like the idea at first (another small forward blah blah blah) but looking further into his play (leading Vegas in scoring, especially at even strength) I think he'd be a great fit, let's say on a line with Slaf and Dach. The alternative to Marchessault in free agency is Toffoli.
So pick between Monahan or Stephenson, and Marchessault or Toffoli.</div></div>
I appreciate your perspective. He's not Markov, I agree, Hopefully Hutson is!
As long as the Habs are adding 2 veteran forwards or 1 veteran forward and one Dach/Monahan style add of a forward like Lundell, I am happy.
I do not want to see Armia, Roy, Anderson, Gallagher, Evans, RHP in our top 6 unless there are injuries. Depending on camp I am on the fence about Newhook in the 2nd line LW spot, but either way we need to add 2 top 7 forwards.

He had a single really good offensive season in Columbus. If next year he can fetch around 15 goals, 20 assists and more body checks, it is going to be a good year for him. He put on himself a lot of pressure to be that big offensive powerforward but that’s not who he is. MSL offensive concepts doesn’t fit him that well either.
I have a similar opinion as yours about UFA. I would also go after Monahan or any other offensive veteran. However, I would sign ideally just one and for 2 years. I would overpay if it is just for 2 years. Could go up to 7 millions for Monahan for a 2 years contracts.</div></div>
What I want from Josh Anderson is for him to crash and bang on the boards, cheat a little on the breakout and get some breakaways, and then crash the goalie on those breakaways. He did none of those things this year for like 60-70 goames.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>I mean, it makes sense. If you can dump Anderson and bring guys like Armia & Gallagher out of the top 6 and into more appropriate roles based on their production, I think you have something here.
I don't know if this team is good enough to swing the goal differential by 75 goals, but barring any other moves the Habs 2nd through 4th lines next year probably look like:
Gallagher - Newhook - Dach
Armia - Evans - Anderson
RHP - Dvorak - Pezzetta
To me, you've got Brendan Gallagher in over his head on that 2nd line, and then you've got two checking lines behind that. Adding Stephenson & Monahan while subtracting Anderson really shifts that middle 6 towards being more productive - and seeing as how you've still got nearly $12M in cap space with this team now, I think bumping up their combined AAVs around $3M is worth it. Like you said - there's no one in Laval really pushing to be in the lineup next year. The best scoring U25 players on the Rocket are Xavier Simoneau (5'7" center who somehow has 111 PiMs despite only fighting once this year) and Sean Farrell (5'9" winger who looked out of his depth at the NHL level last year and probably needs another year of seasoning at this point.) You're not holding anyone back by giving those top-6 spots to productive veterans.</div></div>
I agree with your analysis with the exception of the fact that I feel Josh Roy sticks in a 3rd line role next year.

But the lines that win you cups are the young guys that have fully developed into good players</div></div>
You need Elite talent for sure. I think the Habs have some good ones in their top line and 3rd line (Newhook & Roy). I don't think the Habs need to add too much more youth. Suzuki, Caufield, Slaf, Dach, Newhook, Roy is by no means a great core on offense, but they all have something special.
I think you put vets around those guys and see what happens. Maybe trade for 1 more this year, even if you have to deal a 5OA pick.
