My guess is Kane will sign with whichever team presents the best opportunity to get back on the ice and show he still has it in him to be a big producer. Sure- money talks…but putting up gaudy #’s across from Panarin or Dibrincat will get him another big contract. He seemed to like NY- and the NY lineup does seem to have a hole which he could fill nicely. So I’m figuring NY to have a leg up on the others. But that can easily change once the season starts and grinds forward.

Twitter Isles Fans think theyll finish above NYR
I wouldn't mind getting the Gaut back....but does Belize really spark any interest from the Isles?
Gaut just doesn't seem to have the IQ to be a real good NHL player....but still can be serviceable...every time I saw him out there he hustled his butt off, caught many from behind on the back check, and used his size and speed decently...As a bottom 6er, why not?
As far as Isles fans getting porky about finishing above NYR...wouldn't worry too much- it's that time of year. Reality will set in soon enough!

1. He does not have to go to a contender, the aforementioned players are examples of that. For example he would probably be an excellent fit in Detroit where he's even reunited with DeBrincat
2. He really doesn't have to prove anything he's Patrick Kane, not a fringe NHLer. If and when he's cleared to play you are at worse getting a 60-70 point player</div></div>
Agreed on #1. My point was simply from speculation. I have no idea what's going on in his head in terms of what he'd really see as a good opportunity for himself.
Can't disagree more on #2. He can totally be a shell of his former self. Even though he is a superstar, he's still human...and if the injury (and maybe other issues associated with that hip injury) aren't 100% corrected- can be debilitating enough that his floor could be much lower than you mention.

When those guys hit FA, they weren't in the same "prove it" situation Kane is in....meaning he needs to show he can play with his repaired hip. And I'm guessing that most teams Kane would consider (contenders) don't have too much CAP wiggle room. So he most likely signs a discounted deal where he gets the benefit of proving he can still be productive- all the while getting a chance to contribute in a Cup run somewhere. And if all goes well, he might have another 3 or 4 year decent contract yet to sign.

Next Year Rangers with no major changes
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kyle_Okposo_Lover</b></div><div>Lindgren and Kakko both get way more.
Rangers fans not realizing how valuable they are the team is so funny to me. Get rid of Lindgren and that defense looks waaaay worse. Get rid of Kakko and the defensive side of the forwards takes a big hit.
Lindgren gets an 8x6mil deal for team friendly. He easily gets a 7x7 deal as a UFA or if he really wanted to stretch it he could get 7.5. Hes better than guys like Sanheim, Ekholm, Brodin and if that cap goes up, he will get some more.
Kakko will get 5-6 mil easily. A 3x5 mil deal or even a 6x6.5 deal makes sense and seems possible.</div></div>
You’re probably right about Kakko….obviously top 6 opportunity and how he shows continued development will have a lot to say where his next contract lands.
Regarding Lindy- I think every NYR fan sees him as the heart and soul of their D. But recent reports have indicated NYR trying to extend him long term for under 5M per. He’s still RFA at end of contract…so he loses a little leverage there….but if going long term at the #s you mention is what it takes to avoid arbitration, then they are probably better suited selling high on him. Sure that would be a hit to the team- but hopefully a D prospect or two is ready to push the roster. And as much as we all love Lindy, he probably won’t age well (like Girardi).

What if Kakko scores 0 points in August
Terrible deal for NYR
This deal really enables BOS to restock on the fly to keep their contention window wide open by adding 1 player on a value CAP hit who can put up big #'s right now, along with 2 younger players with massive upside...1 who's certain to contribute now, and an offensive Dman who figures to contribute well into the future- especially when he digests the BOS system of D.
And what do NYR get? 2 players who probably don't make the team better at the moment...and maybe 1 of whom gets extended beyond their current deal? Along with a 1st round pick which is certain to be devalued by the reasoning mentioned above.
Thanks, but NO THANKS!

sign him
My guess is that the plan going forward is to roll with a 21 player roster, so the CAP space to start is in the 1.5M range. This would provide a little flexibility to bring up a player from Hartford in case of a small injury or illness, and would also enable a call up of Othmann or Cuylle in case either is killing it in the AHL. It also results in an accumulation of CAP space (I believe around 3M by TDL) which might put a signing of Kane in play for the later part of the season and playoff run....obviously lots to fall in place for this to happen- but accumulating CAP essentially buys time for this possibility, or other TDL options.
If Motte can replace one of the low cost options they already have signed, all the while maintaining the CAP space- then great add. Otherwise, only way is to move Goodrow- which isn't happening.

Every UFA signed costs less than a player on ELC. Don't think any re-signable RFAs would have extended for that cheap. Jeannot still awaiting a contract. Highly doubt he accepts bottom dollar. Unfortunately with NYR roster/cap construction, any hopes of signing LaF and Miller are contingent on filling out the roster with players on the cheap. Apparently there was no interest in Goodrow.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NYR1983</b></div><div>Yes, Kakko would be the same. Thing is, they already have a precedent set and that’s the Chytil and Lindgren deals. This is how NYR work with the exception of absolute super stars(fox and shesty who both took less than they could have got). So ya, KAM isn’t getting 1.2, it’s more like 3.5, while Laf gets 2.5, Kakko will be 4-5, shesty will be 8. Only way either signs an OS is if it’s term and money, only way it’s not matched is if it’s over a set amount. Everyone said the same thing about the TB players 3 years ago when they were 15-20m over cap. But good luck getting Laf to sign 1x6m, it won’t happen unless he actually Wants out and that hasn’t once been expressed. Not to mention we are the only fan base who hasn’t blanketed him with the term “bust” lol.
Aho signed because he knew CAR could and would match
KK signed because he wanted out
Laf and KAM don’t fit those moulds</div></div>
Unless negotiations with LaF and/or Miller camps are going south, an OS- although not impossible- is not a likely situation. Most likely scenario is both sign at/around the #'s you lay out...and then 2 or 3 years down the line they revisit negotiations- at a time when the Cap takes a huge jump AND NYR have close to 20M coming off the books.

thing to consider is the Cap is expected to make a BIG jump next year. So over the next few years a lot more $ will come available at a time where it's easier for NYR to shed salary until finally they are done with Panarin and Trouba contracts.

When he was a kid fresh out of the Draft, that was understandable. As he now enters his 4th year, there are no more excuses. Both physically and mentally, he's had enough time to improve all his attributes and really show what he can do.
Can't always blame the Coaching staff for everything. Especially while on a competitive team. Any other Coach that would have been here would have given more ice time to their Top players. When Panarin averages over 90 points over each of the last 2 Seasons, while Kreider averages about 45 Goals over the last 2 Seasons, they've earned more opportunities than a kid who has topped out at 40 total Points.
Time for him to set himself apart.</div></div>
How about putting him in the PP slot Kane had end of last year?
Comes down to whether Lav looks to placate his vets OR do what's best for the longer term picture. Of course if LaF was inserted on PP1 he would have to perform. But he would need a generous window of opportunity to show he belongs (or doesn't belong) there. And the important thing to realize is that IF he is given PP1 opportunity and shows to fit in there, the resulting production should generate confidence and assertiveness which should REALLY benefit whatever line he is on (1st, 2nd or 3rd).

Sooo...Kakko for
1) Roy- a former 5th who does seem to be developing nicely, albeit still in juniors
2) Smilanic- a former 3rd whose development doesn't seem to be on same trajectory as Roy...and if not signed to ELC within next year becomes UFA
Just very curious on the logic in the value coming back. I mean- Kakko hasn't set the world on fire...but his floor is a mid 6 NHL player. Good chance both players coming back never get past AHL.

This is where they will need to be careful if they move or buyout Goodrow. There should be a number of bottom 6 options available....last thing they want to do is overspend AGAIN!
Also if they could acquire Drury from CAR- that could be a big factor in bottom 6 design.

Killorn will be 34 in Sept; Zucker 32 in January. Unless getting either of these guys on a Corry Perry like deal I would stay away. How bad would it be to still be on the hook with Touba dead Cap and have to buy out one of these guys because he no longer can contribute in the NHL- let alone provide contribution commensurate with his contract? Like an Andrew Ladd situation...no thanks!
Only situations I'd entertain a Trouba buyout at the moment would be 1) If the Cap were used to extend LaF or Miller long term. Currently, though, a bridge deal would be more appropriate for both. Maybe Miller gets a longer deal- but that can be done by just getting Goodrow off the books. or 2) To acquire an RFA or a young player signed with term.

Soucy is a huge left shot D who plays alot on his off-side. Not a player who is going to generate a lot of offense. I would rather take that 4 mil and use it on an actual RD like Mayfield - Mayfield is 2 years older than Soucy.</div></div>
Your points about Tarasenko- exactly why I wouldn't buy out Trouba to get into that mess.
As far as replacing Trouba right now with cheaper options- I'm sure there are several acceptable options which could become available...but I'd just leave Trouba in place for now. I want to see what he can be in Lav's defense. And really Plan A for moving on from him probably coincides with Schneider being able to move to 2RD AND the loosening of Trouba's movement clause. And don't forget- any dead money on hand might really be an issue when they look to extend Shest in 2yrs.

Wouldn't 2 players making a combined 3.64 million and putting up a combined point total b/t 50 & 60 pts be better than 1 player making the same amount of money and only putting up 31 pts.</div></div>
Your example of replacing Goodrow with Engvall and Acciardi is by all means acceptable. I wouldn't pick those 2 players...but the premise is fine. The issue I have is what's done here with Trouba. I don't know enough about Soucy to offer a real good opinion whether he'd be a good replacement for Trouba....but I don't dislike the premise- as long as the resulting CAP savings is invested in a player much younger than Tarasenko. To get out from under Cap committed to Trouba- only to commit that to a player who will be 37 when his contract is done is just foolish.

The Islanders, Devils, Sabres, Penguins, Flyers, and maybe the Bruins? Even if he agrees to waive for those teams, the only somewhat logical teams the rangers would trade with are the sabres or Bruins because they are out of the division. Still not necessarily possible that trouba would be willing to waive to go there, that's why I came to the conclusion of a buyout.</div></div>
For a few reasons, talk of trading Trouba at the moment is probably a moot point...so yeah- if they were to move him a buyout would probably be the means. But to invest the resulting Cap in Tarasenko and Soucy I think would be a pretty bad decision.
One other thing...I for one look forward to Trouba's play under LaV- he seems to stress defensive structure, yet also wants his Dmen to contribute to the offense. Also, physical play is a trait of Lav's teams. Trouba might have a lot to gain under the new coach.

Maybe some of this could happen if the were able to trade Trouba. With a little retained salary he becomes an attractive add to many teams. Of course there is the NMC issue. But buying out Trouba and Goodrow? not happening.
Buyouts are a very bitter pill. If done to extend players off ELCs or to acquire either a young player (signed with term) or an RFA- then the buyout might make some sense. But to use the gained CAP to invest in UFA's? That's just extremely poor asset and CAP management.

Great hockey trade. Classic example of having to give something you don't really want to give to get something you really want/need. Sure- it's most likely that COL deals with their situation by finding a suitable deal involving Girard....but that suitable deal wont involve NYR if Chytil is involved. Can see Chytil REALLY finding traction as COL 2C- a spot they really need to improve (not knowing what to expect w/ Landy). And Toews could be a cornerstone Dman playing w/ Fox. The way the rest of the lineup fills out, the formula for Goodrow staying is LaF and Chytil combining for 6M in Cap, give or take a little bit.
If Miller looking for 4-5M, maybe the opportunity is there to sign him to a deal like Chytil. Of course that would require removing Goodrow. 3.5M over 3 years is lowballing, though. Maybe he takes that on a 2 year deal.
