Built to Win
Jersey passes easily. We are not winning in the two years before Johnny becomes a UFA. Why would we trade valuable assets for him when we are rebuilding?
If we want him we might just get him for free when we need him.
Gaudreau is worth more but I would really only give up NYI second and something like MCLeod and a defense prospect not named Smith or Bahl

I wouldn’t trade Zacha for Johnsson and Engvall together. We dont need Anderson. We have a goalie who is younger and putting up better numbers. And we want to keep our first. I’d offer a third for Johnsson. That’s about it

Bastian is a fourth line plug. That being said I’m going to decline only because NJ Is very short on big physical players. He is the kind of guy you can throw on a line with Jack Hughes and a sniper and he would create a lot of room and Bang in lots of goals. I wanna keep him.

As for dermott being our best LD I think Butcher is better but the point is that we dont need aNother bottom pairing D.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lewke</b></div><div>it does have 100% to do with wants and needs for the team LOL. You're not taking into consideration what a team wants and needs on their team to warrant a trade being made... think of it this way,
is Pietrangelo a great player? yes.
Is he worth 8M/year? yes.
would the Leafs/Jets/Flames/Knights sign him too a contract for that much? yes.
would the Sharks/Canes/Preds sign him for that much? no, because they already have too much money tied up in their defense and wouldn't be willing to pay a player like him that much money because their WANTS and NEEDS are different than other teams...
Coming back to the point of the deal you said, why in a year where the Leafs are looking to make the playoffs trade off from a point of weakness in their defense for a forward where they're already strong enough as it is... if you made that offer to a team for instance the preds/canes i could see why they would potentially look at doing that because they're sheading cap and trading from a point of strength to fill a hole in their forward group... either of those teams i think would love to have miles wood and the contract that he is on :)</div></div>ya. I don’t think you understand the point. Of course wants and needs are important. But my counter was just being used as an example to show you how absurd the return was. It has nothing to do with wants or needs as the proposal was just matching up similar players.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>omegared</b></div><div>Corey Masisak’s take (Devils beat writer): Severson was the Devils’ best defenceman this past season, has three years left on a reasonable contract and is young enough to still be good when New Jersey is ready to be a contender again. Put all of that together and the Devils are going to need a substantial return to move him. Dermott is three years younger, so he would fit a timeline centered around Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes better, and has been played pretty well as a young defenceman on a strong team. And the Devils don’t have a 2020 second-round pick, so that could be enticing.
Two concerns I could see the Devils having: 1) Dermott is the same size as fellow lefties Will Butcher and Ty Smith, though his style of game might be different enough for that to not matter. 2) Do they believe in Dermott’s upside? He’s played 17 minutes per game for the Leafs, with some instances of getting more responsibility because of injuries. If the Devils’ primary goal is to add more young, good players to build around Hischier and Hughes, then this offer could be tempting. Though I could also see the Devils feeling like it is an “almost there, but not quite enough” kind of offer as well, especially because Severson could put up better numbers playing for Lindy Ruff and increase his value.</div></div>
That’s one guys opinion which is no more relevant than mine. Lol. And the 2nd round pick is more enticing becuse we don’t have one as opposed to a a first. . Lol.

NJ passes. If I’m selling Zacha off I’m not wanting Dermott back. I’m gonna package him for a better D And I Think he’s better than Johnsson already and can play LW as well.
I’m expecting Zacha to put up 50+ next year and become a top two way guy.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lewke</b></div><div>it defiantly does have lots to do with wants or needs that's the exact reason why teams make trades lol. It also comes down too where the team is in the standings, the devils aren't going to compete this year so getting younger players/prospects/picks for valuable players on their roster that will be aging out when they're ready to compete is how you rebuild properly.
And that value is nowhere close to the same, Muzzin is a better defensemen and is locked up longer term. Johnsson is a better player than Wood and Dermott is far and above better than carrick</div></div>
My counter had nothing to do with wants or needs. It was a counter proposal with similar players to show you how far off they are.
Muzzin a better player? That’s debatable. Same as Johnsson. Dermott better than Carrick I’ll give you that.

Value is not close. This doesn’t help NJ. Also never said you would retain salary but the option is there in case the leafs need it. Dermott is a bottom pairing d. We have enough of those in NJ.

It has nothing to do with wants or needs. It had to do with quality. Dermott is NOT a top four D. The proposal I gave you is pretty similar value wise to what you proposed for Severson. Of course the leafs wouldn’t make that trade.

Miles wood had a 19 goal season under his belt. As yourself would you take that offer i countered with.
Johnsson is a middle 6 player coming off of a big injury. dermott is a bottom pairing D.
A cost controlled #3 right Handed D on a great salary Is returning more than that.

Lol. For the record you have no clue. When you make a trade proposal you need to consider the other teams position.
1. We are rebuilding and will not win in the next year or two and have no reason to add Gaudreau when if we wanted him we could get him for free in two years.
2. Lucic has negative value. Not saying that his negative value and Gaudreau positive value cancel each other out. But it’s pretty close. Gaidreau will bring in a first and a top prospect. Lucic will cost you a first and a mid level prospect.
3. Our defense is terrible. We aren’t trading our best defenseman when we want picks or prospects because we are rebuilding.
4 the first rounder. “See #3”
Therefore I wouldn’t trade Severson and the first for Gaudreau. I wouldn’t even trade Severson or the first by themselves for Gaudreau. And Gaudreau is one of my favorite players.
Just sayin’...

We could always move johnsson in a different deal. Don't need you to retain. But I guess it depends on what the devil's are looking for. If they would just want futures or do they want NHL help now</div></div>the problem is that while the value seems fair it might be hard to give up their best D and then be left with Subban, Butcher, Carrick and Mueller as their top 4. So it might be a swap with Sandin instead and maybe McLeod added but I can understand why the leafs wouldn’t want to give up Sandin.

If you want Severson it’s gonna cost 15th and Liljegren, and I still would turn it down. If you want us to retain it’s gonna cost you more. Although Pittsburgh overpaid, Kapanen just brought in a first and a prospect. Severson is worth more than that.
