Realistic FA and Trade
I wish the rest of the caps fans would understand this....
Hagelin, was not signed to score. sure, secondary scoring is GREAT, he was singed for one reason and one reason only, to KILL F'n Penalties..
He is not going to give you 15,20,25 or 30 goals.. HE is going to kill. That's what he is here for. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Trade him and now you are back to using 19 on the PK... Typically you want to avoid that..
Now, panik, I would pay Detroit to take him.. its a salary dump.. so a 4th should be about the cost... along with a prospect to say thanks for the help.

One last two trade
sooooo let me get this right here, you want to trade one of the teams best PK'ers (Hagelin).. a few weeks before the playoffs..from one of the top PK teams in the league(4th @84%)... when the PK will matter the most..... I am confused here....

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sagecoll</b></div><div>I can't speculate on that. I do know that team's like to win cups. And given that the Capitals have the oldest roster in the league and the majority of those older players signed well into their 30's and less than a handful of actual NHL prospects in the pool, I'd say that the probability of winning a cup is going to go decently down in a few years.
So it makes sense that a team like Washington would take their 1st and one of the few top prospects they have to make a move to win a cup. It's not the greatest long term strategy but the Capitals have set themselves up for this by having 9 F's on the books through at least 2 more seasons, and that's not even considering if Ovi resigns or Vrana signs an extension. So the Caps in this position kinda have to keep pace with Pitt and Carolina and Tampa if they're going to have a legit shot at another cup over the next couple years. That's not going to happen through drafting/developing, that's goin to happen through asset acquisition.</div></div>
WSH has to ask themselves, are you making this move because to NEED to, or are you making it because you feel as if you need to keep up with other teams moves. ie; Pitt & whatever tampa does.
IF say moving panik, to slide say oshie down to the 3rd, with Kreider on the 2nd line is the missing piece..is that worth the cost??. but I dunno man, everyone wants to win.. but at some point, you cant gamble the future anymore.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sagecoll</b></div><div>yeah I mean according to Bob that's the minimum it's going to take...
as he describes it "1st + Top Prospect + prospect or cond pick"
McMichael is a top prospect, Protas is a borderline top prospect. And obviously then you add from there.
It sounds ridiculous, but so does every trade made this deadline season, this is the market.
.</div></div>
You hit the nail on the head there.. is it worth that much for a rental.. especially when everything you give up will be playing against you on a reg. basis... Heck theres the chance he even goes back....

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MaxDomi13</b></div><div>So then trade Copley and Djoos plus one of Leipsic, Dowd, Boyd, Hagelin</div></div>
I agree with all of that, except the trade hagelin part. Way to vital on the PK for WSH.
Maybe find a sucker for Paniks $$?

Washington Next Season
I agree to much money tied up into the future... OVI's deal is going to def. be a raise.
No way I would keep gudas at that AAV. I would let him walk and play a younger guy. the sami signing is throwing money away - we do not need him. We have 2 in the AHL that I would rather play than over pay that guy.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>hpatton</b></div><div>and of course the fact Holtby's having a **** year and has seemingly lost his starting job, for the time being at least, has nothing to do with it...</div></div>
Honestly I was never really on the Holtby bandwagon, not saying he is horrible.. I am simply a fan of moving guys with large contracts prior to them falling off a cliff.. especially when we have a top goalie prospect, I mean you either drafted him to eventually replace holtby or to trade him.
And I am not a fan of signing guys past 30 to gargantuan contracts either, no matter how much 'the fans love him' -(Oshie)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Larkinisking</b></div><div>I honestly really don't know the prospect pool of Washington? Honestly i'm not even sure if they've the pieces to land Erik Karlsson Pierre Dorion will want young impact players that can help Ottawa now.</div></div>
Samsonov & Lucas Johanson are the #1 & 2... sadly, for a team that has mostly retained our #1 picks, that is close to being it...
I mean we are the team that gave up FF to nashville for ERAT.........

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BigBeardBurns</b></div><div>Id resign Grubauer if it means losing Holtby (if Samsonov doesnt perform from the beginning, ur screwed). Also, u r correct about Holtby having value, but people have been shortening his value because of his playoff failures.</div></div>
you are 10000000% about his value declining because of playoff failures...
I really think that the more I talk about this trade, or moving someone to get space, the thing that is lost is that the huge improvement this team can instantly have with the subtraction of Orpik.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Larkinisking</b></div><div>Holtby has a 7 team no trade clause, Wouldn't surprise me if Ottawa isn't on it. Take more then Holtby+Bowey+1st+3rd to get Erik Karlsson out of Ottawa. Pretty sure other teams like Tampa could beat this rather easily.</div></div>
Fair enough, What would you add?

Life After Holtby
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>That this build has exactly 8M in cap space says to me that its author knows both of these things, tried to fudge Carlson's salary down to see if the Caps could afford Karlsson and Ryan without losing Carlson as a UFA, and then chucked Ryan away in frustration and hit publish.
Bobby Ryan has eight goals. he plays sixten minutes a night, with 53% offensive zone starts. He's -7. <a href="https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/r/ryanbo01.html" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/r/ryanbo01.html</a> Last year he had about a dozen goals and as many assists. That puts him level with Alex Chiasson last year. <a href="https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/c/chiasal01.html" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/c/chiasal01.html</a> Alex Chiasson's not bad, either. He's just taking up a spot that could be used to develop a prospect out of Hershey.
But a team thinking about paying five years of Bobby Ryan's seven million dollar salary to get one year of Erik Karlsson shouldn't be dissuaded because Ryan only has eight goals and is -7. No. The bigger issue this year is that Karlsson only has seven goals, and is -27. <a href="https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/k/karlser01.html" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/k/karlser01.html</a>
Karlsson has had some great playoff years, offensively, but can the Caps really deal with his defensive weaknesses throughout the regular season, and still get to the playoffs? Ottawa has mixed results.</div></div>
leaving 8.1 in cap space was intentional. It was done to offset the carlson salary that will be north of 5.9 when he hits the markey & an ext. for EK... - because nobody is giving it all up for a rental.
However, the only true cap relief wash gets is for orpik to retire & shed us of his albatross of a contract.. The hope was getting a 'decent' C in return from AZ... Likely? NOPE.
Nobody will want Ryan & his contract either...
Currently Wash has the #1 goalie prospect in the world, unless that has changed overnight, thus in my eyes making holtby & his north of 6 million salary expendable... again, probably not gonna happen either....
The big question is, what team is going to dump the farm and future picks, for ONE year of EK???
