Islanders blockbuster
I gotta go with a HELL NO on this one chief. As someone who can watch a lot of AHL games for the NYI, ho-sang is a bust that cannot play at the NHL level. His ego and his lack of defense will never get him there. Dal Colle imo doesn't get very far in the NHL either (3rd line at BEST), so one for one with puljujarvi is a stretch at best. Gagner for Boychuk also favors NYI cuz of his term and the fact that we don't need him. He's on his last legs, ontop of the fact that Bouchard, Bear, etc is gonna take his spot as soon as this year and as late as 2021-2022. I would gamble to say sooner rather than later. Basically, he's just gonna sit on the roster and be a waste of space for three years. So if this trade will work at all, NYI has to lose out hard on the rest of the trade. I dont see a world where you can make this trade fair from this point, and including nuge ontop of this already poor trade is downright insulting. Maybe Bear for Wahlstrom. But with they way the defense is now in the system, i don't see Holland bringing in another waste of cap to rot away for a few years

Its more like they have too many ****ty defenders under contract that they gotta get rid of. Klefbom for Risto lets them play Miller and Montour in their top 4, and with dahlin to complete it. Then you have Bogosian vs Nelson for the 3RHD and Scandella vs McCabe vs Hunwick for the 3LHD. All of these players are not good, and aside from Nelson make way too much money. You're also saving cap in the deal.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Klefbom for Ristolainen? Are you ****ing crazy??</div></div>
Are you? Klefbom is a better player than Ristolainen. Sabres need a lefty more than a righty too.

Who would you rather - Goalies
Vasilevsky and its not close.
Gibson, but if we are talking about the price from a few years ago i'd have to change my vote
Bishop, based solely on age.
Andersen, Lehner could have a mental breakdown at any moment
Hart, i want a goalie not someone made of glass
Dubnyk, again solely on age
Binnington, Rask is trending down (needs less starts) and cant hide the fact that Binnington carried his team to a cup.
Quick, hopefully the final one i base off age alone
Smith, even at Talbot's peak he couldn't beat him, whether smith was on the coyotes or flames
Grubauer, again i don't want someone made of glass
Markstrom, ill take a starter over a backup any day
Howard, if you cant be a good goalie with Karlsson, Burns, and Vlasic on your d core, you probably shouldnt be in the NHL

Nah the Oilers won't deal out a prospect for a dead player unless you make it REALLY worth their while. Like Russell and Gagner for Boychuk and a 1st/Beauvillier. You get more of a cap hit on much less term, which is easier to buyout, while giving up part of your future to acquire pieces elsewhere to win now.

lines opening night
If youre gonna break them up I'd do:
Neal - McDavid - Kassian
Nygard - Draisaitl - Chiasson
Benson - RNH - Gagner/Marody
Granlund - Haas - Archibald
but that requires Benson to be a bonafide top 9 winger that can score, chiasson to be the same player he was last year, Marody to be NHL ready / Gagner able to find his old scoring touch, Nygard to be able to play in the top 6, and Neal to bounce back and somewhat replicate what draisaitl can do with McDavid. More likely the lines are:
Draisaitl - McDavid - Kassian
Neal - RNH - Chiasson
being the top 6 and some combination of
Nygard - Gagner - Archibald
Khaira - Haas - Granlund
being the bottom 6. Jurco or Benson can replace Nygard, Granlund or Khaira, along with Cave or Brodziak, can replace Haas, and Marody can find his way to push out a center or a right winger. Like Holland said, it's legitimately gonna be a battle between around 10-14 players (if you wanna counter Puljujarvi, Gambardella, and Yamamoto) for those bottom 6 spots. And although i said the top 6 will probably be those 6 forwards, I think they will get jumbled a lot as well (Neal playing right with another left winger in, Draisaitl and Nuge swaping places, chiassion and Kassian swapping places, etc.) At least in this top 6, you only have to rely on one of Neal or Chiasson to be able to score. And the bottom 6 is less about rushing offense (Benson/Marody) into the lineup and more about playing the best defensive hockey we can and letting the top 6 carry the team

oilers 1920
I don't think its a lock for them to miss. Sharks only got worse (lost pavelski), Arizona is still can't score (outside of Kessel, who will still end up taking a dip in production), Calgary definitely overperformed last year (Giordano's Norris caliber year) and now they have Lucic to weigh them down so they regress, Vancouver did not get that much better (they are still a pettersson injury away from being irrelevant), the ducks are still a joke, and the Kings are guarenteed last in the division. The oilers main problem is actually their lack of offense from their bottom 6 and defensive play (especially pk). Holland brought in plenty of guys to remake that bottom 6 (many that are good on the pk) and got a much better coach to iron out that defense. Arizona had **** teams for years but at least they could play some d. McDavid and Draisaitl will score enough together to win games, just need the rest of the team to be able to shut the other team down. They wont be first in the division, but 3rd/4th isnt that far out of reach

Oilers pass on the deal. We aren't taking kulikov for puljujarvi, thats the biggest slap in the face. I think Nuge for connor is a win for the Jets, and same with Nurse for Roslovic. Add Vesalainen in for Pulljujarvi and that'll make it more even.

I think it's pretty fair value for Strome. Lagesson is a great prospect, and Puljujarvi for Lemieux is pretty fair 1 for 1. I think overall its squares out. Also I don't think those three are tradeable contracts, considering they all have NTC and its not like they would want to play for the teams that have the space for them. I don't think there's a market for them.

Fox is significantly more ready than Hajek. The only thing that would keep Hajek ahead of Fox on the depth chart is handedness. Rykov vs. Hajek is the more interesting battle in camp.
Kravtsov is as much of a lock for a top 9 guy opening day as you'll find.
TBH there really is no difference in value between a 3rd and 4th round pick. NHL teams know this. I don't think it's a big issue. Rangers are taking their time.</div></div>

That puts you over the cap. So you have to trade Strome. Which is fine because Kravtsov (weirdly not listed here) slots right in. McKegg also probably in AHL. And Fox is with the NHL club most likely.</div></div>
See i figured I would have to trade Strome but I didn't know how much DeAngelo was worth. I also didn't think Fox and Kravtsov were NHL ready right now. I think Fox probably starts in the minors and is called up after a trade cuz there's no room for him on the blueline rn. Vlad for a 4th was mainly due to the cap situation, as every team knows how badly they need to make a trade, so they are going to be getting less of a return. Vlad for a 3rd is more fair IMO but due to the situation i have it as a 4th.

Realistic Roster - Part 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMTD</b></div><div>First, I am not criticizing the trade, because I would like to get Martinez for Buffalo. Why do you think LAK would make this trade. Russell is 32 and Berglund does not appear on Dobber prospects. I was thinking of one of Buffalo's RHD (younger than Russell) for Martinez.
Please help me understand, is LA shopping Martinez?</div></div>
The reason I think they would do it is due to their abundance of RHD, shortage of LHD, and the fact that they are a bad team. When trying to come up with teams to trade Russell to, this seemed like the best fit. Haven't heard anything on LA shopping Martinez, I just thought he would be the best defenseman I could get using Russell without giving up an arm and a leg. I went with Berglund in the trade due to him being a former 3rd round pick (which i see as the difference between Martinez and Russell) and the fact that he is a RHD that could eventually replace Martinez in the lineup. Kings need to get younger and faster, and adding more prospects to the pool is never a bad thing. I could be underrating Martinez a bit in this trade though, perhaps Ethan Bear could be included instead of Berglund to make it more fair.

Realistic Roster - Part 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>uphere</b></div><div>I think, with Lucic gone, Holland is hoping that Kassian can continue to have success with McDavid and Draisaitl. Certainly Kassian is one of the few pugilists who has enough speed to keep up with those other two, and he does have some offensive flair (he managed to score 15 last season, and with a far more realistic shooting percentage than Chiasson enjoyed). It makes sense to me that the GM will want some decent protection for the Crown Jewels, and if that tough guy has the potential for 15-20 goals then life is great.
Neal, in my opinion, is a calculated gamble on Holland’s part. It serves the team well if Neal plays the left side with Nugent-Hopkins, and I think Holland is hoping Chiasson and Gagner compete for the 2RW. If Puljujarvi signs, he will start on the 3rd line, unless he completely dominates through October and November.
I don’t know what to expect with the bottom six, but it should be better than last season’s group. If Holland can’t bring in an experienced guy to center the third line, maybe Marody and Haas compete for the 3C. At this point in his career, Gagner is a right wing, and either he or Chiasson will be needed on the 3rd line to support a rookie center. Khaira is far more effective along the boards, Granlund has struggled down the middle, and Brodziak is either the 4C or headed for waivers.
My guess, the early season line-up might look something like this:
Draisaitl/McDavid/Kassian
Neal/Nugent-Hopkins/Gagner
Nygaard/Marody/Chiasson
Khaira/Haas/Granlund/Archibald</div></div>
If i were to redo the lines on the assumption that McDavid and Draisaitl play together, i would go with:
Draisaitl/McDavid/Kassian
Neal/Nugent-Hopkins/Chiasson
Nygard/Granlund/Archibald
Khaira/Haas/Gagner
for the roster as it stands. Chiasson played his best hockey when paired with RNH, and Neal will assumingly bring more offense to the line. I think that Archibald and Granlund play 3rd line duties together as both are two-way players that are good on the pk. Definitely want to get them gelling together on 5-on-5 if they are gonna be on the first pk unit against the opponent's best lines. I think Nygard with his speed with compliment them more than Khaira, who will find himself on the fourth line. Haas, being the shiny new toy and unwilling to go to the minors, takes the 4C role. I would consider Cave for the role if Haas busts. Brodziak should be buried. That leaves Gagner and Jurco to compete for the final RW spot, of which i gave it to Gagner as the defense option, as well as the fact that id rather have a high scoring AHLer in the AHL with my prospects.
The only thing i don't like about this lineup is that there is ZERO room for puljujarvi, and the 3C role still has a hole. Is Granlund a Center? This lineup sure makes it seem like he was brought in for the role, while many believe him to be a winger instead. Also, in this lineup you aren't putting puljujarvi on the top 2 lines. I don't want to breakup the Granlund/Archibald pair either. Sure you can put him in for Gagner, but hes not playing on the fourth line, that doesnt help him. Which means you have to swap around the 3rd and 4th lines. Then you have:
Draisaitl/McDavid/Kassian
Neal/Nugent-Hopkins/Chiasson
Nygard/Haas/Puljujarvi
Khaira/Granlund/Archibald
which to me is the shakiest 3rd line you'll see in the league. Two unknown, unproven Europeans with Puljujarvi. Yikes.
What it comes down to is whether or not you think Puljujarvi is staying or going. Staying? I'd say my line combo above with the star players split up. Going? Well i hope he brings in a 3C.

Depends what we get out of Neal, but i think we should shoot for Lafrenierre this year. Our defense has a hole at 2RHD and shaky goaltending. Probably can beat out LA, but beating out VAN, ANA, and ARI would require major improvements.

khaira - Gagner - kassian
however I see another top 6 winger/3rd line center coming in within a week or two. If we get another winger we can have mcd, drai, and rnh on separate lines

1. Overpayment for Gusev
2. Lucic has salary retained, not Neal.
3. Ottawa made it clear they arent taking on cap for nothing (aka picks), this trade doesn't go through.
4. Any deal with NYR right now is to empty cap space. They would still have to find a way to sign Puljujarvi. Also the trade itself is an overpayment on the Oilers' side
