Like CD282 said, they are very very close. Just a few tweeks away.</div></div>
It would have been closer, but Avs were the stronger team and it showed.
I do think they're closer than they've been in a while, but you need better goaltending and more depth on defense. Keith retiring helps a bunch. Need a better top-pairing dman with Nurse; Manson is 2nd-pairing IMO. And I still think you need a better goalie than Skinner or Comrie, but that's just me.

Kuemper had a 0.898. Smith wasn't great, no, but don't blame this entirely on him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Smith was playing injured, so much so that he likely isn't going to recover in time to play hockey all next season. So there's that.
But if you look at how Colorado performed against each team they met in the postseason, only one really challenged them at 5v5. Here are Colorado's stats in each series:
vs NAS: 59.66 xGF%, 62.69 SCF%, 56.58 HDCF%
vs STL: 59.84 xGF%, 62.93 SCF%, 62.89 HDCF%
vs EDM: 53.28 xGF%, 53.03 SCF%, 46.07 HDCF%
vs TBL: 60.57 xGF%, 60.20 SCF%, 56.73 HDCF%
As for Colorado's vaunted defense, here's how many high danger chances they allowed from each opponent:
NAS: 9.95 HDCA/60
STL: 6.89 HDCA/60
EDM: 15.06 HDCA/60
TBL: 9.00 HDCA/60
Again Edmonton is the anomaly.
Here's a look at how the two teams performed down the stretch, from Feb 10th through the end of the regular season:
Record
2. Edmonton: .724 (38 gp)
8. Colorado: .662 (37 gp)
GF - GA = goal differential
Edmonton: 3.82 - 2.76 = +1.06
Colorado: 3.38 - 2.76 = +0.62
SF - SA
Edmonton: 34.8 - 32.4
Colorado: 34.8 - 33.2
Net PP, Net PK
Edmonton: 21.4%, 87.0%
Colorado: 21.4%, 82.8%
There really isn't much daylight between these clubs.</div></div>
As I've heard for the past few years regarding the Avs, none of it matters unless you win in the postseason.

A decent goalie would have made a big difference.
But I bet you don't recall how bad the Oilers goaltending was?</div></div>
Kuemper
Game 1 0.813
Francouz
Game 1 0.857
Game 2 1.000 (chef's kiss)
Game 3 0.931

The Avs just won the cup with Kuemper averaging 0.898 throughout the playoffs, so...try again? Smith was terrible at times, but he also kept you in it when the Avs poured it on.

So after being swept by the Avs in the playoffs and seeing Keith retire, your solution is to spend more on offense, less on defense, and practically nothing in goal...?

Sakic should trade for Patrick Kane
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NDoody</b></div><div>Strome would also be a decent replacement for Kadri and likely the cost to sign him is still manageable in the Avs cap situation, so yes I would agree with that. I would say Toews still has better Defensive and PK skills than Strome does. IT really is all about how you want to structure your team and what else is leaving/coming in with the Avs RFA's and UFA's.</div></div>
Priority will be leaving room for the Mack extension, keeping the d-corps together, and signing Nichushkin/Lehkonen. We ideally sign another 2C for 3-4 years x ~$5m who can supplement some of what Kadri provided on offense last year. Beyond that, our PK was dynamite in the playoffs and the Avs are unmatched at 5v5, so I don't see a need to trade for Toews

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NDoody</b></div><div>I hear you, just posting what I heard on Sportsnet. I can see though that we would be more for his Defensive play and PK than scoring. The cost is for the retention, which the Avs would probably ask for more than half, so +5 mill of cap space has a very high price. We saw Kassian and MArsek contracts which are less than 5 mill cost a first each.</div></div>
Why trade for Toews when you can sign Trocheck or Ryan Strome? Saves you a 1st and you probably pay each of those guys around $5m

Still wouldn't do it. I don't care how bad the Hawks were last year, the guy had 37 points...that doesn't get you a top-4 defenseman AND a pick in return.

I feel like the framework for the Avs deal is there, but the Canucks add IMO if only because Horvat is a pending UFA next year whereas Girard is signed for the next 5 years at an extremely team friendly deal. Like the idea though.

Isles 22-23
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles5513</b></div><div>I never said the stats weren’t similar if ur just looking at points. I’m saying the way you get there as a 6-5 righty and a 5-10 lefty is completely different. Girard’s entire game is based on being an offensive defenseman and Hamilton is more of an all around guy.
I think Girard is a good player on a good team, but idk that he makes ur team better on his own. I mean that’s just my opinion based on when I saw him play at Belmont last year. Avs crushed the Isles but Girard was unimpressive imo.</div></div>
For the record, Girard had more defensive zone starts than Hamilton this year, so let's not call him an all-around guy. He's a offense first defenseman. Does he have the benefit of being a righty and being 6'5? No doubt, but when it comes to turnovers/takeaways, they are remarkably similar. Go look at their Corsi % and Fenwick %.
Not trying to say Girard is the next coming of Jesus here, but he's consistently underrated and undervalued because of his size. He's not going to blow your socks off, but he's a solid defenseman and IMO, worth far more than Varly and a couple of 2nds.

Hamilton is without a doubt the better player, but go look at their stats and tell me that they're not similar. I think you'll be surprised. As for value, defensemen are inherently more valuable than forwards. You also can't disregard the deal he's signed to, which holds immense value

Then the Isles aren't trading for Girard, it's that simple. He's signed to an extremely team-friendly deal for the next five years and has been incredibly <a href="https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/g/girarsa01.html" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">consistent throughout his career</a>. For reference, Dougie Hamilton (7 years x $9m) had 30 points last year; Girard (7 x $5m) had 28 points last year. He's not going to come cheap in any trade

whats the price
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HeadHighSauce</b></div><div>won't the looming extension of MacK factor in too? Kuemper, Val is probably half your currently available cap. Obviously you guys know what they'd prioritize better than I would. Just figured Kadri, Nichuskin, and Kuemper will be more highly prioritized than Lehkonen</div></div>
O no doubt. UFA priorities are Nichushkin, Kuemper, Lehkonen, Kadri, and Manson in that order. Kadri's down that low only because he's likely priced himself out of Denver. As for Mack's extension, Erik Johnson's $6m deal ends the same year, so that will likely all go to Mack which would bring him up to $12.5m. He'll likely take less than that though because he wants to win and has said as much.
Burakovsky is gone. Cogliano, Sturm, Helm, Murray, and Jack Johnson could stay but likely at the vet minimum.
You're probably looking at $5.5-6m for Nichushkin, $5-5.5m for Kuemper, and $3.5-4m for Lehkonen. Leaves you about $12m to sign a 2C and fill the depth out. Though I don't see them spending more than $6m on a 2C given that Byram and Newhook will also need deals next year. It's going to be an interesting summer...
