<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Flames22</b></div><div>You raise some good points. Bennett is (unfortunately) underused in Calgary. I actually think that he should be playing on the first line with Gaudreau, but that's just me. He has a good shot, he has decent speed, he plays feisty, he does good work along the boards, and he is one of the only players who has actually shown up for the team so far these playoffs. Having said this, as it stands now, you're right: To the rest of the league, Bennett is probably worth around a 2nd round pick, so the draft picks included in your suggestion are about fair value. Personally, I would just rather see the team build around Bennett than trade him away for a chance to move up in the draft. He is worth more to me on the team than the chance to pick at #15 would be.

From the Flames' perspective, if I were wanting to trade a player, I would be looking a little bit more closely at moving Backlund. He's a good player, he has excellent underlying numbers, and he generally plays great defensively, but I think the team has other similar and more cost effective options at the position in Jankowski, Ryan, Dubé and even Lindholm. In other words, Backlund is a player who's trade return might be more useful to the Calgary.

You're also correct about Calgary's organizational depth at defense. Because of this, I think that Kylington is in fact a trade candidate. So, considering all this together, maybe I could see something like Backlund and Kylington for Drouin (I understand that Calgary might have to add, but this would be a rough framework).</div></div>

Thanks for the analysis and intel. Not sufficiently familiar with Backlund's game these days to say how he'd fit with the Habs, but it's Bennett's rawness that I like most. He's a lot like Gallagher in how he loves to piss off opponents while also being a slightly dangerous player in the "o" zone.

Since I have you on the line, what's your take on Lazar? What has gone so wrong that he's washing out at 24?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Flames22</b></div><div>Huge no from the Flames. Calgary refused to trade Valimaki for Mark Stone, no way that trade him because of an apparent glut at LD. He is the team's next #1 dman, so if you want him, you're talking Price with retained money just to start the conversation.

And don't sleep on Bennett either. He's better than his point totals suggest.</div></div>

Thanks!! I like this answer, but I want to tease it out a bit with you. First, I really like Bennett, but he is underused in Calgary (not undervalued) and is a depreciating asset. The Flames had no first rounder last year, so the chance to move up in the draft would be meaningful, I suspect, based on what I've read about the "depth" of the top 15 in this year's prospects. Realistically, on performance, Bennett is worth a second rounder, so the swap of first and a third would be a decent payoff.

Second, a question, if Valimaki is untouchable (which I get), would Kylington be available? I would think that might work, too. Unless Hanifin has run afoul of fans, he's still the best horse in the Flames stable. Giordano, though old on paper, is showing no signs of slowing down and is under contract for the next 3 years. So really there's only room for one rookie on the left side, so without a move, you'll eventually lose one to waivers or expansion. On the right, there's Rasmus Andersson but with Hamilton and Fox gone, there' no one else in the pipeline. Brook is a good Western boy who would fit the Calgary style perfectly.

As for Mark Stone, there was never any talk of him staying in Canada after this summer, so he would have been a rental. I wouldn't trade Valimaki for a rental. That's what picks are for.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Flames22</b></div><div>Sam Bennett is one of Calgary's best trade chips, and still has a fair bit of potential. I can't seem him being traded for a 34 year-old winger who has fewer points, a 6th/7th defenseman, and a centre with 11 points so far this season. Also, Calgary doesn't really need younger defensemen (Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington, Fox are already in the system), nor do they need cap relief.

I think any trade involving Bennett starts with Evander Kane or Sam Reinhart coming the other way. Even then, I don't know that Calgary would be prepared to acquire either of those players at that cost. They might be better off packaging Bennett for a guy like Mats Zuccarello or Max Pacioretty. Just my (perhaps biased) opinion.</div></div>

For Max Pacioretty you are absolutely correct and I think Treliving would be wise to investigate that avenue.

But I do not want to start a big fight over this but I just want to point this out:

Pominville:
Season Team Lge GP G A Pts PIM +/-
2016-17 Minnesota Wild NHL 78 13 34 47 4 2
2017-18 Buffalo Sabres NHL 63 9 13 22 6 -16

Mats Zuccarello
2016-17 NY Rangers NHL 80 15 44 59 26 15
2017-18 NY Rangers NHL 62 10 32 42 30 -6

So you would be OK packaging Bennett to get 3 more goals over the past 2 years, but not in a package that includes 2 salary dumps and 2 other young players being offered for Bennett.

You are most likely correct that I over reached, I just wanted to point out that the trade really is not that far out. Sure the Sabres would have to add, but even by your standards as you mentioned, it is reasonable and close. I would like to add that Pominville plays on the lowest scoring team in the NHL and scored well when he was paired with Eichel. But you are correct that it would be a waste of an asset to include him in this trade.

Finally, I wonder if Okposo replaced Pominville what would you think? Do you think Treliving would have to add?

Thank you very much. BTW I did say it was a crazy trade. I know that trade will NEVER happen. First, both Stajan, and Stone have NTC contracts. Second, IMO (and yours) Bennett would be traded to try to upgrade and included in a trade for a superior player. On the other hand, the Flames dump Stajan's and Stone's salary, the Flame do make a modest improvement in the current team. the over all ages of the players traded are almost the same, Pomenville helps them on the right side and Girgensons on the PK, but the trade will never happen, it was just a crazy post. BTW, I agree with you, the trade will never happen, I do not want to go to war over this, just those were the reasons I thought Treliving may be interested with the trade.
