Throwing big money at 2 players who have just arrived at the NHL level and haven't at all established what kind of players they are going to be, is a recipe for disaster. Kapanen disappeared in the second half and the playoffs. Johnsson had a few great stretches but still has a lot to prove. Giving them more is what guys like Chiarelli would do. If these guys want that kind of money, trade them, they haven't at all proved they are worth it. I'd give Kapanen a 2 year deal around 2 million and Johnsson either the same or a little more on a 3 year deal but I wouldn't put either above 2.5 million.

I think every player in a cap league is going to get compared against the salary he makes.
When Nylander held out for more money and took 1.5 months to get his legs back under him, everyone was ready to ship him out. Now there's a lot of people (myself included) who think he'll be one of the better bargains on this team moving forward.
Zaitsev is a decent defenceman. His reputation is absolutely tarnished on here because the leafs need cap space and he's not exactly playing like a $4.5m player. If he was doing everything he's doing right now...but putting up 40pts like it looked he'd be capable of after his first year...no one would be complaining about him. But between the offensive numbers falling off, his $4.5 cap hit (and term), and the leafs' cap crunch...all the sudden people think he's a brutal defender. Alternatively, if he was at $3.5m no one would care.
So I agree...if Marner holds out for 8 figures and has an off year I think fans and media will be quick to turn on him

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Fignn</b></div><div>I see what your saying the media will be the problem. They will start saying why was he the only one to take a discount when the rest didn't and he could be the best forward.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Fignn</b></div><div>how about we trade both pylons for A) a defenseman B) sign another real good UFA. I rather have Ennis at 1M. Anyone can play with Mathews. Mathews needs Nylander or Marner not Kap and Johnsson.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>Marner's star can definitely shine bright in Toronto for the rest of his life. Hometown kid, high skill, high effort, big offensive numbers, and big personality are all things that will make this market fall in love with him over his career. If they win a cup....that will only cement his status as a lifelong icon. Doug Gilmour is still revered in this city and he never won anything and he's still involved in advertising campaigns and marketing events.
But I don't think he'll leave $2m/year on the table. I'm sure athletes love the endorsement deals they can sign, but I wonder how much they actually enjoy the work/acting/public appearances that go along with being the face of a campaign. For us peons....would we accept less money from an employer because having them on our resume will make it more likely we can land a part time job on the weekends?
Endorsements may play a small factor...but IMO, not enough to take a huge pay cut.
The other concept is the idea of Legacy....being revered for the rest of your life for the things you were able to accomplish while wearing a leaf jersey. I think that can definitely make a player more flexible in negotiations (and/or less likely to get lured by offer sheets)...but I think you want to feel like you're still getting a fair deal when compared to your peers.</div></div>

Cap and D resolved
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Fignn</b></div><div>I didn't say it was ideal I said it was to get under the cap. Most teams carry 22 they don't have to. They need to have 18 skaters and 2 goalies.</div></div>
I thought we've been thru this already. You can't start a season with 20 players and no cap space to fit a call-up. The team would be forced to ice an incomplete lineup anytime someone has a day-to-day injury.
You need to place someone on LTIR in order to get cap relief and, in order to do that, a doctor must diagnose the injury as being 10 games or 24 calendar days long.

not at all a fair trade to stl. one year of petro for at least 5 years+ nylander, unless he signs an extension which would bring his value up it would be better but he is aging and there isnt any reason to give up the pick as well

Idk about your “solutions” here?
Nurse is another LH defenseman, so probably not what u guys need
But even if this did happen, you’re gonna need more Cap space
Literally no room for an extra defenseman or forward under the Cap
Probably gonna have to pay someone to take Zaitsev off your hands to make some more room
Especially if Marner wants more $$$ than that
And he well might

The only thing that will change is Johnsson or Kap wanting way to much so he is forced to trade one of them</div></div>
Well, considering teams don't make multiple moves shuffling around $4M players that often, I would call my proposed lineup here, some fairly large moves for one off-season.

Trade value wise this is fairly close, I think mango and Kappy get a bit more (~3-4@2.75 and 2-3@2.75 respectively) and I'd rather not sign either of those dmen. Rosen looks promising and seeing as he'd be a 3rd pair guy all he needs to be is replacement level.
I think you are showing the problem with moving z in terms of the hole it creates in the 2rd spot, Jensen would have been the perfect fit but the caps got him. Need to watch fa or see if doobie can fleece a team.

Yeah, I actually had him in the lineup prior to reading about Edm/Tor trade discussions that took place.
Time to take Hainsey away from Babcock, I'm thinking Dubas would make this a priority before next season.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Fignn</b></div><div>They need young guys. Brown could be traded elsewhere I was trying more to free up cap space by adding him in the deal.</div></div>
Who needs young guys? The team with Troy Terry, Sam Steel, Isac Lundestrom, Daniel Sprong, Maxime Comtois, Antoine Morand, Jack Kopacka, Kalle Kossila, Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Kiefer Sherwood, Jacob Larsson, Josh Mahura, and a top 4 D core that are all locked up long term and under 27 years of age (Manson and Fowler are 27, everyone else is younger).
Heck, even Rakell, Kase and Gibson are 25 or under.
Getzy, Perry, Brian Gibbons and Kesler are the only only guys up front over 30 (Add Eaves who is 34, but who knows if he ever ends up off the LTIR).
I know that the media's narrative right now is that the Ducks are too old, but the future looks pretty solid, especially if the team is can stay healthy for any sustained length of time.

what to do
1. Eichel is better than Marner
2. Eichel is a Center, premium, compared to a winger
3. Ratanen and Points contracts will have implications for Marner since they are all so comparable, but the 2 are doing better.
My bet is a 7 year deal at 8.5-9Mil or a 3 year deal at 5M

What does Manson cost
As a fan of both teams I've thought a lot about all of these players mentioned. For Manson, Nylander straight up is too much from Toronto (don't get me started on that horse**** about Pesce straight up) and Kapanen isn't enough. Kapanen plus a first would be okay for Montour; for Manson, a first plus probably Johnsson and Bracco or Liljegren (I'm giving a range here). With Anaheim's current cap situation, there's no chance Toronto can pass Zaitsev on to the Ducks (unless Nylander was coming with him, and why would Dubas do that?).

I don't know if they don't enjoy playing for him just yet, he's earned alot of respect, but I bet there is some frustration creeping in with some of his decisions. No one likes when they're subjected to a double standard, and it seems pretty clear to me there are two different sets of expecations/rules in place for Babcocks favorites vs the rest

If Dert/Z had equal time to Gards/Hainsey I know where I'd bet my nickle on which pair would have greater success</div></div>
The issue is Reilly and Gardiner we’re both at 25 min and everyone else was at 15-18min. I still stick to my guns that D pairs would be better this way...
Reilly-Zaitsev (yet another flawless game last night by Z)
Dermott-Muzzin (I know that Gards replaces Dermott)
Gardiner-Oz (give hainsey a break and split 50/50)
Top pair 24 min
2nd pair 22 min
3rd pair 14 min
Gards gets PP time.

I never said Marner should get more, I believe he is the better player but the sad truth is the NHL pays Centers more money than wingers. Mark my words, when their careers are over Marner will put up more points than Matthews. The same goes for the Kapanen and Johnsson, everybody places an extra million onto Kappy's annual contract, yet I believe both players are closer to being equal than which most perceive.
