What the Leafs could look like with only internal replacements
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Herms17</b></div><div>honestly, aren't you kind of under paying Kapenen? Like why wouldnt a team just offer sheet him at 4 million and give you a 2nd. I am sure the Oilers would rather do that then give a 4th for a 3rd line winger.</div></div>
Given his comparables I think 3 years at $3M is probably at the upper end of fair, an offer sheet is possible for sure if the leafs let it go to July 1st, but it seems teams tend not to do that. Also just because Edmonton may offer more, Kapanen may not want to play there.

You can use LTIR over the offseason, the Leafs did it 2 years ago

He's only 18th in G/60 and 78th in P/60 at 5v5 since coming into the league, although 3rd in G/60 in all situations, but he gets a lot more PP time than the average player.
He's also a winger without arbitration, and UFA wingers like Kucherov and Mark Stone are only making $9.5M despite being better players, and having the ability to leave and negotiate with other teams.
If you look at some of his comparables Tarasenko and Kane are probably the closest and they only made 10.27% and 11.09% of the cap respectively. I think he makes somewhere in the middle at best, which on an $83M cap is about $9M.

Kapanen for Pesce
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pennerJ</b></div><div>At 3.8 Toronto can't match, not if they're signing Johnsson at least. They would have to get rid of Brown, Hyman, Zaitsev with no returning cap and still they wouldn't have enough to fill out the rest of their roster.</div></div>
This deal could be made before July 1st so offer sheets would not yet be in play, and if you wait till July 1st there's no guarantee that Kapanen will even accept the offer sheet or that another team may offer a competing offer sheet.

IMO Nylander is a much better player. I think from what we've seen of Kapy playing with Matthews, he is very good, but Nylander is much better at gaining the zone and keeping the cycle going for Matthews. The one area I would miss Kapanen is on the PK, but I think that you can essentially play anyone on the PK as long as they can skate and buy into the system.

Not a huge fan of any of these trades or the Myers signing. I think it makes the team worse, and doesn't help the cap problems as there's no room for extras, and you've gotta re-sign half of these players again next year anyways

Babcock tries one last time before he is fired
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arafay</b></div><div>Its not Babcock's fault
The defense on this team is Abysmal.
I suggest:
Reilly - Zaitsev
Gardiner - Muzzin
Dermott - Hainsey/OZ
The biggest issue is Hainsey playing on that top pair. Reilly needs a physical defensemen who can get the puck loose. That describes everything Hainsey is not. Zaitsev should be fine on top pair. Gardiner needs to be more physical to be decent in his own zone. Playing with muzzin should improve that. Dermott - Hainsey/OZ is self explanatory
Honestly, I do not think even that will fix it. The leafs just lack in their own zone. the only forwards who backcheck are Tavares, Marner, Marleau and Nylander. If the Defence pinches and the puck gets by them, the leafs are exposed. Other teams that are extremely effective in all ends are the Jets, Lightning, Sharks, and Nashville. If you watch closely, every forward backchecks hard. The leafs just lack that eve though Babcock has been trying to get them to do exactly that all year</div></div>
Rielly-Zaitsev was pretty garbage when they were a pair before.
I really don't think the D is that bad, a top 4 of Rielly, Gardiner, Muzzin, and Dermott is better than most teams in the league. IMO the problem is when Zaitsev and Hainsey get more minutes than most of these guys, or when they're used in a "shut-down role".

I like the Tavares and Matthews line how they are now, and I think the Kadri line will be fine once Kapy comes back. <div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonesryan</b></div><div>Demelo is a #2 on a ****ty Ottawa team. Realistically, on a good team he's a 5-6 guy at best. Zaitsev has much more offence to his game to allow him to be higher in the lineup and a more important part to a lineup. On Ottawa, Zaitsev would probably pick up between 30-40 points if not 45 while giving you average defence. Demelo is an average defender that will give you 20 points. Zaitsev is a pretty good upgrade over Demelo</div></div>
Strong disagree here, Zaitsev has had less pts/game than Demelo in each of his last 2 seasons while playing significantly more minutes per game. If you're taking Z over Demelo, the arguments gotta be defense.

While I probably agree Demelo > Zaitsev, It will take time for the Sens to be competitive and by the time they do, Demelo may have walked in free agency or be less effective than he is now. The 3rd will be more useful to them when they're ready to win. And this deal doesn't really help them get to the cap floor, as you'll be taking Gaborik's contract anyways. Ottawa would probably rather pay to have a player play for them, than to have a player on IR.

Full Leafs Roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonesryan</b></div><div>That Ottawa deal is bad for the Leafs cause Toronto won't be giving up 2 roster players to get Pesce.
The basis of the Sens deal is there, but straight up that doesn't do much for Toronto. Leafs are actually helping the Sens more than Ottawa helps them because Melynk is so cheap.
To Ottawa:
Zaitsev
TOR 2020 3rd round pick
C+ or B- prospect (I've suggested Pontus Holmberg)
To Toronto:
Gaborik's contract (goes on LTIR and gets his on island)
Dylan Demelo
If Melnyk wasn't so cheap, I could see Ottawa not having to add anything in, but the fact that he doesn't wanna pay a guy to not do anything for him gives the Leafs leverage even though they have the cap issues. That leverage being: any team can take Zaitsev for a reduced price, not many teams have the financial flexibility to pay a guy to not play for them. Toronto is one of them. Advantage Leafs.
Pesce for Kapanen alone is almost fair in reality (despite what some other users on here say), Toronto maybe adds a 2nd in it to get it done and can ship Brown elsewhere to get more assets.
As for the signings, Kapanen is reasonable, Johnsson I think you're in the right ballpark but might be different term and a bit more money. Marner you're off by probably about $1M if you're gonna do 6 years, he'll get closer to Matthews AAV if his term goes longer than Matthews. Best idea is to bridge him until the cap opens up.
AND DEAR GOD DO NOT BRING MARINCIN BACK.... PLEASE!</div></div>
While I do like Demelo, I don't know how much he really moves the needle for the leafs, I think I'd rather just keep the 3rd, however I agree that that's pretty fair
For Kapy and johnsson I looked at a few comparables who got 2-4 year deals as UFAs after similar production, namely Kase, Pacioretty, Ritchie, Wood, Marcus Foligno, Niederreiter, Bjorkstrand, Tatar, Baertshi, Mantha, Hyman, Brown, Roussell, Dzingel and found that $3.1M/year was pretty fair
As for Marner given that Stone and Kucherov are UFAs with greater negotiating leverage and are flat out better players, and they took $9.5M I think that at the end of the day it will come down to around here.
As for Marincin I don't mind him nearly as much as others lol, but I just want him as like an 8th defenseman, and will only play if 2+ are injured, realistically you could sign any UFA there, like maybe Chris Wideman? I just thought I'd keep him in that spot as a familiar face

Idk if it's necessarily the best deal for Minnesota, however given the direction they're trending they may want to go younger and kind of retool, so this could make sense for them, and be a deal that they realistically consider.

Kapanen for Pesce
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>This thread is amusing. Two sides on very opposite ends of the spectrum and I think I disagree with literally every post on here.
For starters...take any comment that says "Toronto would take this...or Carolina would/wouldn't" and throw it right in the trash. It's all meaningless banter unless you guys are in direct conversation with Kyle or Don.
When we're discussing the three guys here...Nylander, Pesce and Kapanen....spouting off that one is way more valuable that the other and claiming to be "right" can also get tossed right in the trash. Those are subjective opinions. A three are great players...but all three are very different players who have similar type roles (ie. probably valued very similarly) on their respective teams.
Nylander....is not overpaid at $6.9...at least not right now. There's a chance he becomes one of the biggest bargains for the leafs as of next year...depends on how he continues to develop. But a guy that puts up 60pts in his first two seasons and is 22yrs old is a very valuable asset. More importantly, I'll gladly wager that he stays a Leaf for the next 3 years. Has nothing to do with a Leaf bias of him being super valuable...it comes from the belief that the Leafs committed to him and view him as part of the core. IMO, he hasn't been one of the best leafs the past month...but it's obvious his legs are back. He's playing 3rd line centre with Brown and Marleau...not slouches...but not premier finishers either. I personally wouldn't trade him for Pesce straight up unless it was done under the premise that they needed to shave cap dollars
Kapanen....his value has sky rocketed. For me, him, Marner and Tavares have been the 3 most consistent leafs night in and night out. He's creating offence almost every time he's on the ice. Where Nylander excels at possession and stickhandling, Kapanen uses his skating to create opportunities. He's easily a top 6 forward and can slide into a 1RW role with relative ease while also being a dangerous penalty killer. I wouldn't want to lose Kapanen from the lineup but not sure how much $$ he's going to be asking for and if it'll fit.
For either Leaf, they will be subject to scrutiny and the question will be...how much of their output can be attributed to their linemates?
Pesce...IMO he is a top shut-down D-man. But that's about it. I'm trying to find a comparable to him...guys that stifle the opposition and can play 20min a night doing so, but can barely break 20 points a season. If you look at the way he suppressed passes to the slot, high scoring chances, etc...he ranks up there with the best in the league....but any guys in a similar category to him put up at least double the offense so it's hard to put a value on him. Realistically, strictly defensive D-men don't get the same love that a lesser 2-way d-man does....IMO he's the perfect pairing beside an offensive d-man either on the first or second pair.
To say who would fetch who is not possible. Don Waddell is typically stingy with his assets so one can imagine that he'd want more than just Kapanen. We're not really sure yet how aggressive a GM Dubas will be...but his comments prior to the deadline that 'we are not trading Kapanen' suggested to me that he WAS okay to move him, but wanted his value in a trade to be higher than other GM's were suggesting.
IMO a lot will come down to 2 things.
1. How each team performs in the playoffs (assuming Carolina gets in, which I think they do). If the leafs get beat by bad D and/or the Hurricanes struggle to score, it may loosen the purse strings for that GM. They match up well as trade partners given the surplus of offence for Toronto and defence for Carolina...but neither side HAS to make a trade...and so I think that's why neither side felt the urge to pull the trigger yet. We'll see if that changes.
In the meantime, I'll continue to believe that any disrespectful arguing involving these 3 guys and debating which side would or wouldn't need to add as being completely trash because it's subjective and will be based on factors many of us are not privy to</div></div>
This may be the only level-headed, reasonable post in this entire thread
I did not think this would start such a massive flame war on a post that didn't even involve Nylander lol

There won't be a difference to the cap, however Ottawa still owes him real money, and since the leafs are a wealthier franchise, and the Senators are trying to cut costs while they rebuild, they would probably want to get rid of the real money they owe players who aren't going to play.
