<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyManiac95</b></div><div>The Avs tried that same merry-go-round technique last year with 2C and it didn't go well.

Totally agree with you on getting a new D, just thought I'd see how this idea flies. But I do have a question for you. Assuming that if we did float 3-4 guys in the 3RW spot, would u be OK if we floated Hunt/JJ/MacDermid/Malinski/and maybe Middleton thru 6D?</div></div>

You're not wrong when you say they tried the same merry go round technique last year with 2C, the Avs had just shed all their cup winning depth and went into last season under-staffed though.
It is an entirely different situation with the depth pieces they've added for this season so I feel like that is not a direct comparable, even with injuries in the forward group for this upcoming season they'll have way better depth available to shuffle around as needed this year, especially when Kovalenko is available.

The main issue I have is that you need 6 quality D and still depth beyond that so while I am a fan of both Hunt and JJ, they aren't good enough at shut down D or fast enough to be able to skate corner to corner in their own end to compensate them being paired with Girard. If we still had EJ I wouldn't feel this way because EJ was smart enough to know when to truck someone into the boards and when he shouldn't so he could offer support to Girard. This brings up probably my biggest gripe with Girard himself is that he requires a partner who is fast enough to skate corner to corner throwing his body around. EJs foot speed has really taken a hit the past couple years and he still did wonderful last season but it was easy to tell the writing was on the wall for this season.

Trading Girard and using the 7+ mill available to sign someone like Statsny/Kessel while still being able to pursue a viable 5-6 D replacement in the 2-3 mill range is a path i'd be willing to take this summer. You don't need to replace G's offensive output directly but you need someone competent at shut down D that can PK to take minutes away from Makar, And that could be 2 D players replacing Girard and still adding 1 of Statnsy/other to the bottom 6 F group.

I don't think Middleton will see much NHL ice unless we *knock on wood* get riddled with injuries again this season, Malinski I have seen enough of to know he has a chance to turn some heads at the NHL level but he likely still needs another 1-2 years to fully develop and i'm not a fan of rushing prospects. Lyubushkin from Sabres is the type of player I have in mind to come in the 5-6 spot, he would pair a lot better with either Hunt or JJ and could still add a guy like caleb jones or ethan bear to have the appropriate depth so Makar can drop to 20-22 mins a game and not 25+ all season.

if the 2nd line was 16 mill for all 3, I think you'd find a lot better balance and be able to have a lot deeper back end even with extending Mack.
I don't hate Hertl as our 2C, I could get behind that but no way Bura drops out of the top 6 with only kaut/LOC below him.
keeping together the Ranta, Newhook,LOC line IMO is what we'll be trying to do as our 3/4 line.
Overall though I like the big picture I just don't see Forsberg being a mainstay on our 2nd line at any point as his shot % has been steadily declining every year for the last 3-4 years.

If I tried to build off your conjecture I've been reading the Habs might be targeting Girard to pull in a french player with years on contract. What if Avs flipped Girard for Guhle and picks, &lt;--- Right around the time frame you're proposing is right when Bowen Byram needs to get paid right so Girard is dead weight since his money should be going to Byram (who should be in the top 4 this upcoming season already replacing Girard if he stays healthy) 5 million for a 3rd pairing D is TOO MUCH, especially since Girard offers 0 intangibles (which intangibles are usually standard in 3rd pair D on a contending team) So its fair to say that Girard "should" get traded between now IRL and this moment you're looking ahead to, since long term thats Byrams money.

So can add a $3-4 million RD for below Makar and push Barron to 3rd pair and this D core gets scary good again.
I also see Macdonald being with this group long term as well on the back end, which he would then slot up into the 3rd pair with barron. Or if Girard for Guhle + picks is a thing, Guhle could probably be real close to taking that 6-7 spot and a heck of pairing for Barron long term imo.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingExLeafs</b></div><div>Bertuzzi is a younger and better version of Hyman. Kerfoot is not a center, but he still has value, especially in the playoffs, so moving him to the wing is the best option.

This line up is an upgrade on last season. So they will make the playoffs. The core four are good enough to carry this team.

The two question marks are Kerfoot and Rielly. The Leafs have the option to trade them and clear 8 and a half million. They can then make a big purchase like a Dougie Hamilton or a Landeskog. But Dubas seems to like Kerfoot and wants to extend Rielly. So there isn't really much to work with.</div></div>

The core 4 that has reliably missed the playoffs or lost in the 1st round is now going up against some of the best teams in the whole league in their own division.

I am not saying Kerfoot has no value, I am saying he is not a 2nd line quality player for a full 82 game season. He can cover for a few games when there is injuries but he is not a long term solution to any top 6 in the league except maybe Buffalo now. I agree that the line up overall is an upgrade from their last seasons roster, the issue is you have to play Tampa, Boston, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa x8 and the rest of the league x2 and will struggle vs all of them. This roster as is it sits now is at best 4th in its own division, even with the small upgrades. (barring any major changes)

Campbell has to play perfect every single game and i'm sorry its not gonna happen when he's getting 35-40 shots against every game from much better teams that are fully established in their systems.

I'm not saying specifically Hamilton/Landeskog would be the pieces they need, but they need more than this to even push up in their own division.
and they need to push up in their own division to even make the play offs.

Its going to be a lot different from the last regular season.

Be honest, even if everything goes perfect and the game 1 roster is actually this; Is this really the hill you want Dubas/Shanny to die on?

Returning to the Atlantic Division means playing Sens/Habs that they struggled with already in the easiest division they'll never see again, And also playing Tampa, Boston, Florida who without much debate being needed we can all agree have much better/deeper rosters and should be safe 1-2-3 finishes in the Atlantic Division. So the Leafs have to fight for 4th in their own division.

But with the returning to normal divisions this also means that 5 teams can make the playoffs from the Metro division, and they have 6 teams near the same level as Tampa, Boston, Florida and it should actually be a really serious concern to the Atlantic Division that 5 teams from the Metro are easily capable of claiming playoff positions.

So Leafs best strategy is to add enough value onto the team to contest for 2nd/3rd in their own division to guarantee themselves a playoff position, and while I'm not knocking your personal choices here as you did a great job adding haula, bunting, bertuzzi who would be fun players to watch as Leafs, Its still not enough quality and or depth to compete in a full 82 game season where players are guaranteed to always get hurt but especially will playing Tampa, Boston, Florida 8x each. and all the other top teams in the league 2x.

Kerf is great but not a long term 2nd liner just for 1 point. Putting Robertson on the 2nd line is a wild card play that could pay off but unlikely across a full 82 game season.
to be blunt I guess I just think this roster misses the play offs by a lot.

Sujet: NXT Avs
This is pretty reasonable in all honesty, I can nit pick a couple of things just from my knowledge of sakic/Avs internal structures.
1st one being that this past season was an outlier in regards to Grubauer, he's not getting paid starter money from a weird injured season from Francouz, for the simple fact that next season he'll be right back in a 1A 1B role. While Gru is great and has had a couple stellar seasons the past couple for us, I think he'll have no issues signing 2-4 years @ 4.5-5 mill knowing his role is split, which is already 1+ mill raise.

2nd is probably my biggest nit pick, which only slightly effects your overall picture and thats in regards to Makar, Avs will not sign him to a max contract this year, Because then they lose his RFA status during that contract and when it ends he would be a UFA. He's 22 now so the most the Avs will sign Makar to is 4-5 years this off season, so he remains an RFA for his next contract, which will be his big money contract. He's going to get one of the newer hybrid bridge contracts where he gets some money now but mostly waiting to pay him his big money during his UFA years.

I like the Debrusk addition a lot, that adds some flexibility, even if its not him specifically it makes sense but to me Saad will be coming back, He was too clutch in the playoffs to not bring back.

I would like to note that I think the off season goal will be to upgrade 3C to someone who can comfortably play 2C minutes, IF/when Kadri gets made an example of again it doesn't need to be a hole in the roster.

and well, you know my feelings on replacing Girard, which isn't that I hate him as a hockey player, To me he is just the obvious odd man out having Makar, Byram, Timmins, Graves, Macdonald, Barron, Its nothing more than we have an embarrassment of riches, to allow a single dimensional forward pretend to play defence for 5 mill on the cap. Remember what i'm saying, every time Girard steps on the ice from now on going forward, its going to stand out how literally it is every shift he's on the ice he's giving the puck and his lane away to the other teams fore checkers so he can chase them instead of him being chased. You're gonna think of me haha &lt;-- Its great in the regular season when Refs actually call penalties.
