Rebuild with 1 - Using Cap Space as an Asset
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Huge_Caniac_Abe_Lincoln</b></div><div>The cost against the cap for a Kotkaniemi buyout is 835k per year - less than a league minimum player. Maybe, but 835k for what, 12 years? It's real money and still a drain on the cap..

Seems highly likely that Couture is done.
I can't see Teravainen signing with SJS.
Addison is also probably done...

Too much for SJ to give up to move only, what, 10 spots?
CBJ fans might disagree, but if they want to get rid of Merzlikins's contract, then package him with the (reportedly) unhappy Jiricek for a premium asset. Hell, tack on Gudbranson as well...

Sharks Land Celebrini Sign Reinhart Roy Acquire Durzi for Ferraro Package
Addison basically has zero value.
Kunin has very little value.
The only way I could see this happening is if Durzi really wants out of Arizona or they really like Ferraro.

I think you'll need to pay SJ a lot more to unburden yourself of Johansen.
Given Byram's injury history, I'm not sure if he could fetch quite that much. Frost himself is a very good young player, so something like Frost plus a late first should be enough. Or, Frost for Byram + Johansen...

Yes, there's just no way a trade like this could work currently. Flames just have to hope Huberdeau can improve a little bit.

Sharks TDL sell-offs
I wouldn't fret too much about retention save for Hoffman. Barabanov and Duclair are cheap enough that they shouldn't require it; if spots become an issue then they could easily get someone else to retain for a mid-round pick (going rate is what, a fifth/2 million?). Teams might require retention on Hoffmann, and at that point I'm not sure it becomes worth it.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>goodaytoday</b></div><div>No one wants Labanc, and no one will give a 2nd for him. He has negative value, and even retaining half his cap hit, he only becomes neutral value. We will have to let him walk or retain half and hope some team offers a 7th for him. The rest of the values look good though. Maybe a little low depending on their seasons and if we retain. I could see Barabanov with a 50-60 point season at half retention getting a late 1st, same with Duclair.</div></div>
I just don't think Duclair has that in him, and Barabanov doesn't seem to have a great reputation around the league. It's funny because if Duclair really did have a 50-60 point season then he might be one of the most targeted rentals at the deadline...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>IDKtbh</b></div><div>I don’t think anybody will be paying 2023 first round picks to dump contracts. Maybe a future pick(s).</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>athrin</b></div><div>Ott is mot using a top 10 pick to move a great buyout candidate, they pass with extreme prejudice</div></div>
Sharks are giving up a 3rd rounder as well, so it's only downgrading from a first...but honestly, I didn't realize that Ottawa was so low in the standings this year! I had thought they were a playoff team this year...why are their fans talking about cap management when they still aren't competitive?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tintin</b></div><div>The Devils wouldn't trade Mercer for Meier one for one, let alone add that absolute haul to it.
No way man.</div></div>
Meier is an elite power forward. He's the kind of secondary support championship teams need. Mercer is a solid young player, but I think he tops out as more of a great 2nd-line player, and he's a bit superfluous on the Devils...they already have Hughes and Hischier down the middle going forwards. Trading from a position of strength to fill a weakness is a classic contender move.
It's fine if you think there's a window mismatch, but this is the kind of trade contending teams do all the time.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GenW</b></div><div>Take out the first and MAYBE Buffalo thinks about it and comes back with less</div></div>
There are a lot of conditions on the picks. The most Buffalo would give up is a 1st and 2nd in 2023 as well as a 2nd in 2024 if they win the cup in 2023 and make the conference finals in 2024. The least they would give up is a 2nd in 2023 and a 3rd in 2024 if they don't make the conference finals in both years.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres89</b></div><div>Why would buffalo do this? We are up to the rafters with forwards. The winger market is super weak right now. I would imagine that if buffalo is looking for any forwards, they would be power forwards, we have tuch, Thompson, and cozens that have size in our top 9, and not much else. Plus, again, even if there was a fit in buffalo (there's not), the cost here is way too high.</div></div>
Fair enough if they have enough wingers (a Buffalo fan elsewhere posted about interest in Barabanov), but I don't think the price is too high when you figure in all the pick conditions.
