Ottawa senators season half
Winnipeg has mended ties with Trouba, so he's off the block now. Even if he were back on the block, Cheveldayoff would want a young defenseman who's ineligible for the expansion draft. Not even mentioning Ceci's cliff diving trade value, it's assumed that Winnipeg would want to keep whatever defenseman they trade for.

He's had a really good stretch since I published this, so he might crack the first round now. I agree he's having an incredible season, but the numbers of all the players above are just completely off the charts unreal.

Affordable scoring & depth?
There are many reasons why that wouldn't happen, but the biggest strike is that Ottawa's taking on salary. They're already over the internal budget, and Melnyk is not going to open up the wallet for a veteran just coming off an injury.

Next Year
Few things:
1) Small, but I'd personally give Condon a 1-year deal instead of two. Any kind of term for a backup is generally a poor idea.
2) On a bigger topic, what do you do with Hammond? He still has a year left on his contract, and there's already two goalies in the AHL (Driedger and O'Connor) and a potential third in Hogberg. It's Hogberg's decision on whether he'll want to come to North America, and it wouldn't be appealing if he'd have to share games with THREE other goalies. So either you keep Hammond as an NHL backup and leave Condon to free agency, or work up a couple trades with Hammond and either one of Driedger or O'Connor.
3) Top two forward lines look good. Looking at WOWY stats, I'd personally switch Ryan and Stone, but these have been working as of recent.
4) What to do with Zack Smith... I'd personally keep him for his versatility and depth purposes, and that's a very reasonable contract (personally I'd go $2.5 mill. for 2 years, but again, that's subjective). But if you think Brown and White will be ready next year, then there may not be room. This segues into my next point...
5) White and Brown will most likely NOT be ready for the NHL next year. White will be eligible for the AHL, and he hasn't been lighting it up in the NCAA as much as he was last year. I'm not suggesting he's a bust, but the projection of a top six player might be a bit high. As for Brown, he's scoring everything on the powerplay, so there's no way I'd trust him with third line 5v5 ice time in the NHL as a teenager. Playing him next year would surely be rushing him, and I want him to round out his offensive skills before he starts seeing NHL ice time.
6) That seems quite high for Pyatt. His possession numbers have been a black hole, and his offense has been dry since his quick start. He's still a fringe NHL-er, and would be easily replaceable in the free agency bargain bin.
7) Neil's probably going to retire after this season, just so you know.
8) This makes our bottom six a combination of Smith, Lazar, Pageau (who deserves more than fourth line ice time), and then three spots available. A few potential suitors for one of those spots could within the organization could be Casey Bailey, Francis Perron, Max McCormick, or even Nick Paul if he can step up his game.
9) Moving onto the defense, you need to remember the importance of which side each defenseman plays on. In case you didn't know, Chabot plays on the left side, which pushes Boro off the depth chart. Not that Boro's playing badly (he's actually been alright recently), but comparing him to the other six, he just doesn't square up. I agree that Chabot should get consistent NHL ice time next year, but you have to think of who loses a spot in return. Speaking of losing a spot...
10) Finally, expansion. There's so many scenarios, so here's a list of possible players selected by Vegas (in no particular order): Bobby Ryan, Zack Smith, Curtis Lazar, Marc Methot, Cody Ceci, Chris Wideman. That's a lot of options, and will heavily impact the roster next season.

Trouba Traded to Every Team v.2

Quoting: palhal

Collin: If 1st year RFAs value their freedom so much, maybe they just settle for signing 4 one year contracts and are UFA,s at age 25 or 26, Maybe McDavid or Matthews do this.

That's not at all how contracts work. You still have RFA years left after your entry level deal expires. That's why GMs will sometimes sign players to bridge deals, because it saves them some money in the short term, while also being able to retain their rights once the contract's expired.

Trouba Traded to Every Team v.2
@honeynutchelios Read the description. They're not supposed to. Nice username btw.
@Alex_Hancock I didn't take salary cap situations into account. It'll be nearly impossible to make a trade with Anaheim or Philadelphia without taking significant salary back, since they're both over the cap. But the Jets have almost $9 million currently in cap space, which gives them plenty of flexibility. It could also allow them to augment their return if they decide to go that route, sort of like the Teravainen trade.
@BreKel It's the biggest piece that they have. Every single player going back in these trades are young, left shooting defensemen who are ineligible for expansion. That's why some of these players are pretty much unheard of (ex. Hall, Masin, Fitzgerald), because some teams just lack that. That's why I did every single team, so that we can sift through the league and pick out the strongest trade candidates. And thanks for reading the description. Surprisingly not a lot of people do that. Speaking of which...
@Jacketsman61 Read the description. And Lucas Johansen's a pretty good, just so you know. He's Washington's best young LHD that's ineligible for expansion.
@Larkinisking Read the description. Very few of these are potential 1-for-1 deals, except for maybe the the ones for Columbus, Philadelphia, Montreal and Vancouver. Even then those teams are all close to the cap, so there'd have to be some additions on both sides.
As for Werenski, as great as he's turning out to be, 1) it's still early in the season and 2) I think you might be underestimating Trouba's value. He's already a star, and although he doesn't put up points like Werenski's on pace to do, his defensive prowess is one of the best in the league. It also helps that he too is still improving, as he's only 22 years old. I'm not suggesting that this trade is realistic either. Columbus doesn't need Trouba, as their right side on the first pair already belongs to Seth Jones.
@Viqsi See paragraph above.
@palhal Honestly, I think Horse Vacation (Cheveldayoff) is going to be the victor. RFAs have no power at all, and from Trouba's perspective, I'd rather sign with Winnipeg than go a year without hockey. That could potentially be career-ending, which I highly doubt Trouba wants. You also have to think, his team has received the message that he wasn't happy with his ice time. If he does end up staying in the 'Peg, I'm sure Winnipeg will at least try give him more ice time, in an effort to restore damage.

Teams with a good enough centrepiece: ANA, ARI, CBJ, EDM, OTT, PHI, TOR, VAN, MTL, CAR
Teams that need a #1 RHD: ANA, BOS, DET, EDM, MIN, NJD, NYR, PHI, TOR, VAN
Matching teams: ANA, EDM, PHI, TOR, VAN
So without taking cap space or divisional teams into consideration, it appears as if Winnipeg has five possible trading partners for Jacob Trouba: Anaheim, Edmonton, Philadelphia, Toronto and Vancouver.

You're probably right. They've already got Gostisbehere as their #1 RD, so they'll probably want to save Provorov as their sure-fire #1 LD. They've got SO MANY left handed defensive prospects it's crazy. Just thought a 1-for-1 swap might be fun.

It's time to make Canada great again!
We're already over budget, so our chances of offer-sheeting Lindholm are pretty much zero.
As for the Winnipeg trade, it's completely lopsided. An overpriced aging defenseman who just came off a surprisingly bad season for a top-5 goalie prospect is already lopsided, even without Dano and the second round pick.
I'd take out Comrie altogether, and propose Methot with retained salary for Dano and a 2nd, and even then that wouldn't make sense for either team. Yes, Winnipeg'a pretty thin on LHD, but they've got Josh Morrissey coming up. Him and Enstrom are enough for their first two lines.
Plus, Ottawa would need a replacement, and I'm pretty sure Lindholm is out of the question. So we'd still just be left with a gaping hole.

Kris Russell
Kris Russell is a 5-6 defenseman at best. Spends WAY too much time in his own zone defending, the last thing we need. Almost $4 mill. is way too much for a bottom pairing defender who's a huge possession drag.
Especially since we're already over budget, if we're going to make any signing at all, it'll have to be under $1 mill.

Karlsson traded to Dallas
What do you mean by 'great in his own end'? The truth is that it doesn't matter about how well he can stick check or block shots or block passes when he's always in the offensive zone. And that's what makes Karlsson so valuable, because he rarely has to defend. It's defense by offense. The other team can't score when they don't have the puck.
And even if you're referring to blocked shots and blocked passes and what not, you can't blame Karlsson. Defense is a very structured game, and the Sens haven't had a well-structured defensive system in what feels like forever.
Oh, and he can hit too. Google it.

Karlsson To Dallas Realistic
You say these are realistic, and that's where I'll disagree.
Firstly, the Sens will never trade Karlsson. Never. He's the face of the franchise. And the Dallas Stars will never trade Jamie Benn. Never. He's also the face of the franchise (with Tyler Seguin). That completely eliminates the realism of the first trade, without even looking at value.
The second trade could make sense, as Pittsburgh downgrades their second line centre to someone still really good for an upgrade on defense, without either team swapping salary.
But if Pittsburgh's trying to upgrade on defense and willing to trade Malkin to do it, there will definitely be a better deal on the table than for Phaneuf.
Same thing with the final trade. If Anaheim is willing to trade Vatanen, there will surely be a better deal on the table than an overpayed aging winger with a couple spare parts. Young defensemen are at a premium, which inflates their value.
So to acquire Vatanen you'd be in a bidding war for a player with an already inflated price tag. Good luck trying to make that deal go through.
I know you like to say (I'm pretty sure it's you) that it's a good trade if our team looks better, which is definitely true. But the goal isn't to be the winner in the trade, but for BOTH teams to be winners. That's why trading exists. So keep that in mind.

One of the better Karlsson trades I've seen for sure. We aren't taking back a load of salary, and we get someone who can replace his position.
That said, I don't think there's any trade that would make me part with Karlsson. He's one of the best defensemen of the last 50 years. I can't even believe people would consider trading him.

If you want to be able to pry Karlsson from us you'll
1) Have to send back your best player, which is either Byfuglien or Scheifele. But because Scheifele is younger and on the better contract, we'll start with Scheifele.
2) Send back a replacement for the position. Ceci's not ready for first pairing minutes and competition, so we'll need a first pairing right handed defenseman. Tyler Myers probably would make the most sense, since he probably can play first pair, but plays second pair on Winnipeg.
3) You need to take salary back. Phaneuf or MacArthur most preferable.
4) Balance it out with draft picks/prospects, with Winnipeg probably having to add a couple 2nd-5th round picks.
5) Don't do the trade anyways. Ottawa's completely fine at centre, and Karlsson is our franchise player. No touching.

I actually sorta like this. The only downside for me is that we're getting Nichushkin, who's shown flashes of brilliance, but isn't yet a proven asset.
PLUS we'd be shedding Ryan's contract (although his community work would be missed), PLUS we'd be getting back a second round pick, PLUS Ales Hemsky would be back in Ottawa, and we all know what he can do!

The reason I put him on the top line is 1) I don't think Frolik/Brouwer are better than Iginla, and 2) it would create a similar situation to Florida, with their Huberdeau-Barkov-Jagr line. Combined the grizzlied-yet-still-skilled veteran with two young superstars. Could be like a mentorship role.
