Hilarious Kane trade aside, strome is a terrible fit. He only plays well at C, isn’t a great skater, and struggles defensively.

If Forsberg negotiations fall apart
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>No need for Pens to gut their team and future for rental.</div></div>
Yes, there is. They need a second line wing to be competitive in the East. He’s the best available.
Poulin is a future third liner. Legare may never make the NHL. Pettersson has been healthy scratched and demoted to a third pairing role (and clearing his cap hit helps the team this summer). Kapanen has been bad
This is hardly gutting the team or its future. Late first round picks aren’t usually future stars. There’s a rebuild coming and none of this matters. The core is their mid 30’s. Winning now is what matters.

One Trade Deadline Splash
Where is the Penguins looking to for a defenseman that can "move his feet" thing coming from? I've only seen it form Jeff Marek (who was also saying they should trade for Nick Deslauriers for whatever reason).
Every single one of the Penguins defensemen is an average or better skater for their size. If anything, they would be looking for a heavier guy that can clear a crease or whatever.

Bertuzzi makes much more sense to trade in the offseason or next year. The whole "can't play in Canada" thing hurts his value right now.

Why is this so confusing
Pettersson and Marino haven't been struggling this year despite the weird narrative being pushed around by guys like Friedman (who has little idea what is happening in Pittsburgh since the management change).
The two have performed well as a shut-down pairing this year. Their defensive impacts are great.
<img class="for_img" src="https://i.imgur.com/7GKlbvT.png" alt="7GKlbvT.png">
So why is Pettersson getting healthy scratched and given third-pairing minutes now?
A few factors:
Pettersson is not a powerplay or penalty kill guy, which is a big deal to the coaches in Pittsburgh. They make a lot of lineup decisions based on who's available to PK. When a guy like Mark Friedman is playing well enough to earn a bigger look, the D that comes out is going to be the guy that isn't on the PK.
He's not a traditional heavy shut-down defender that can push guys out of the crease, nor is he dynamic in the offensive zone. I believe this is one of the major concerns with a Marino-Pettersson second pairing. Not enough offense. No one to clear the crease (even if their overall positive impact makes this less necessary) in the playoffs. The Marino-Matheson pairing seems to be an attempt to get some balance here. Matheson is more physical and adds more offense.
The Penguins have three LD making $4+ million, which is too many. It make sense to look into whether they can move one. They desperately need cap space for the offseason. PO Joseph is ready for a spot in the NHL this year or next and has a simliar profile to Pettersson. Tall, skinny, LD that can skate well and plays a solid overall game.
Mike Matheson has been the Penguins best LD this season and has earned a bigger role.
<img class="for_img" src="https://i.imgur.com/cPjG3N9.png" alt="cPjG3N9.png">
Mark Friedman (who plays LD despite being a right shot) has been really good in the few games he's played and draws a bunch of penalties by being a pest.
<img class="for_img" src="https://i.imgur.com/0rOvbzf.png" alt="0rOvbzf.png">
Dumoulin hasn't been good but is viewed as the default partner for Letang, plays a major PK role, and is unlikely to be traded or given less opportunity. Personally, I would look to be giving Pettersson more ice time on the top pairing to see if that works (and explore trading Dumoulin this year and next) but I can see why they are doing what they are doing.

Tyler Myers is legitimately one of the worst contracts in the league. He hinders the ability to sign Malkin, Rust, Letang, Rodrigues. He hinders the team on the ice.
Going from Marino to Myers and paying more money to do it is a horrible idea.

The 2023 draft is widely considered to be a better draft. Teams are reportedly asking for picks from there for that reason.
It’s a better asset that outweighs any “better sooner” stuff.

Montreal pulled this off by telling everyone all season that Chiarot is worth a first. Eventually, they all just accepted it as fact. Amazing work by them.
Also, a 2023 pick is going to be better than a 2022 pick. That draft is loaded.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gaudetster</b></div><div>Still definitely an overpay. 1st + Poulin is probably close maybe Kap or Pettersson to tip the scales but not both</div></div>
The point is to get rid of both of those guys for the cap (this year and next). Kapanen has almost no value right now. Pettersson is viewed as overpaid and is getting healthy scratched.
Those players being involved doesn’t make it an overpay. It’s very hard to move money in a flat cap environment.
Cap space is an asset.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DDUB</b></div><div>Of course Canucks accept, that’s a total overpay for Garland.</div></div>
It really isn’t. Garland is a good two way player, young, and signed long-term.
Poulin is going to be a third liner at best. Kapanen has been terrible and needs a new contract. Sullivan is scratching Pettersson to play Mark Friedman. The late first likely gets you a Poulin-level player.
The Penguins need to move one of their LD to make the cap work. They also need to add a top six winger.
This is fair value to clear cap space and acquire a very good player.

Because cap space is needed for next year and the Penguins currently have too many LD making 4 million and their best prospect is a LD. Dumoulin would be my preference to trade but the coach likes him too much.

Rakell has absolutely declined from his peak. Fans tend to have a hard to grasping when that happens. "How dare you say this guy who was good in 2016 isn't that good anymore!" It's dumb and you should stop. Accusing me of bias for that is hilarious. Have some self-awareness, bud.

Meh. The Ducks got good value for a third pairing-level D who has been declining for a few years now. Colorado gets a player who used to be kinda good and is an upgrade on their bottom pairing.
So the deal is fine.
The real issue is the Ducks holding onto him for so long as his value diminished. What could they have gotten two years ago?

They haven't really been saying that lately. It's turned into more "we want to add but we have little cap space" which can easily be fixed by getting rid of Kapanen. More so if they find a taker for Pettersson who is a healthy scratch now.

There's really no reason for the DeSmith/Halak swap. DeSmith has played well over the last few months. Halak doesn't want to move and has played poorly.
Moving Marino in-season just doesn't make sense unless the Penguins are getting back a RHD that can play a shutdown role. And no, that's not Hamonic. He stinks.
