100% agree. Solid adds and fill the 3RW with a guy who fits great. Also great adds to strengthen 4th line. Leipsec, Boyd, Hathaway can work well in any pair we need for the 4Ws depending on the matchups needed.
Agree also we need our other russians (not OVI) need a bounce back year for the success we want to be possible.
Missed Kempny last playoffs and Osh at the end of round.
I like how we look and our chances to make another run.

Reflect After Day One
That fourth line is gonna be one of the best in the league. Dowd has sneaky good offensive upside. Great shot. Leipsic has really good vision, passing, and a certain grit to him, getting in low in the offensive zone to clean up rebounds and make some noise in front of the goalie. Hathaway is gonna be a great Tom Wilson-esque player (obviously not on the level of Tom Wilson) who might mesh really well with Leipsic and Dowd.
Hagelin Eller Panik; god that line could kill. Speed, elite defensive presence, and solid offensive capabilities. That sounds like an ideal third line to me. I can't wait to see it on the ice.
Kuz really needs to pick it back up this year though if we want the cup back. As does Orlov. And I'm hoping Kempny and Oshie fully recover from their injuries. If these things all happen, I can totally see a deep run to the playoffs.

Team is worse. D sucks. G will not replace K's goals. Team is soft, slow and one injury to Malkin or Cindy from missing the playoffs. Boston, Caps, Isles all tougher to play against in playoffs. This looks like Chicago two years ago. Top heavy and bad D.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>no problem with it at all. There is serious inflation in salaries. That deal will be nothing in 2 years when the TV contract and an expansion team are entered into the league.
Furthermore, he was brought in to hit people. Which he does well. That lets them shed a player like JJ, who was the teams leading hitter last year.
I'd much rather have Tanev than JJ. which is what it equates to.</div></div>
I don't want to come off as rude or snarky at all. But using Johnson's contract to justify the argument that Tanev's contract is okay really is a bad comparable. That Johnson contract was recognized to be awful the moment it was signed and has been proven to be awful all year by Johnson's lackluster play.
Paying a bottom 6 forward that has little offensive upside $21M over the course of 6(!!!) years isn't a smart move. The only good 6 year contract a bottom 6 forward has signed in recent memory off the top of my head was Calle Jarnkrok with the Preds 3 or 4 years ago, and that was $2M per and he plays center and was younger. Tanev isn't old by any means. But committing that money and term to a guy you don't see putting up 40+ points a year isn't the best idea. If it was a 1-2 year deal, then whatever. Not a bad deal. If it was a $2M AAV contract, also not a bad deal. But GMJR didn't need to pay that type of premium for Tanev.
The caps got Panik for 4 years at $2.75M and he's expected to produce a lot of offense. They got Hathaway (a guy who will likely be playing the same role as Tanev and potentially do it just as well) for $1.5M AAV for 4 years. This deal the pens just signed with Tanev may turn out to look just like the Johnson deal signed last year; not good at all.

Solid no more moves needed
I'm so pumped for this team. Loved the signings. Super excited for Leipsic, Hathaway, and Panik. I'm especially excited to see how Leipsic and Dowd play together. They have some sneaky offensive talents. I'm also on board with getting rid of Stephenson. Really was invisible last year. Getting a fourth or fifth for him would be solid. Stock up on picks for the coming draft, refill the prospect pool, and prepare for the retirement of our current stars.
This could be a team ready for a deep run.

He's gonna be a cheap source of goals in the bottom six. Scored 12 goals in 31 games last year for Vegas. He has always had decent goals per game numbers, but he has trouble staying healthy. Low risk/potentially high reward contract, much like Connolly was.

I love Boyd but he isn't a 3C. Eller is on a good contract playing well. No need to move him unless there's a great upgrade out there.

What does the team look like next year
I'd be 100% happy with this but I think the Caps are going to look hard at trading Holtby in the offseason and signing a veteran to rotate in with Copley and Samsonov. A lot of people have commented that Samsonov isn't going to be ready to take on full NHL responsibilities and they are totally correct, but it's more about not exposing both Holtby and Samsonov to the expansion draft (if they were to re-sign Holtby) and/or letting Holtby walk for nothing. If they are able to trade Holtby, it frees up cap room for them to go after another free agent as desired, or just have some flexibility. I'd like to say they would wait until the deadline to trade Holtby but offseason seems more likely because they'll want to give Samsonov/Copley/FA Goalie the full year to get into a groove and not potentially expose Holtby to injury.
Alternative is that they could trade Samsonov, I suppose. Possibly trade Niskanen to clear up cap room to re-sign both Backstrom and Holtby? But my guess is that they'll trend younger.

No way Vrana gets demoted for either of Bura or Hagelin. I think Hagelin will slot in on the fourth and they'll keep the third together since it hasn't been bad lately.
Ovi - Kuzy - Wilson
Vrana - Backstrom - Oshie
Bura - Eller - Connolly
Hagelin - Boyd/Dowd - Jaskin/Stephenson

not straight up, the higher pick than otherwise would be for retention(so if it would be a fourth otherwise the one round up is the difference for retention, or if it was a fifth before it would turn into a fourth). But I remembered that hagelin is already having salary retained by Pittsburgh and I don't know if multiple teams can retain on the same player at the same time.

He's still not in shape (he came into camp out of shape and didnt play for a while because of it). He is probably one of the slowest skaters in the league right now. He looks nothing like the player he was in the Cup run.
So, take a flyer on him, but he's been probably the worst Caps player this year.</div></div>

He is a healthy scratch most times then not for Washington, why would you think he is worth a lottery pick?
If Washington was getting those kind of offers for him he would be gone but teams aren't offering close to that and probably wont.

Party like a Faksa
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boush</b></div><div>Clutch-osity is a myth. You're looking at two instances in time as a definitive narrative as to who the player is and will continue to be. Last year was his best year ever in boxcar stats. He's about the enter the wrong side of 30. Faksa is having the worst season of his young career and is largely on pace with Eller. I disagree with the idea that Eller is a better two-way player than Faksa, as I believe that Faksa is as good or better overall (this season on the Stars being a current exception, which is the only reason the Stars would part with him at all). The Pens won back to back Cups, trust me, they don't have many regrets. The Preds probably wish they had Bonino signed to Eller's deal, too, since they actually have him on their team on a worse contract with mixed results.
In two years, it'll be two years later. Eller will be older and almost certainly worse. Faksa will probably be as good or better as he is now, which, again, is as good as Eller. He might demand more money, and the Caps might be in a position to pay it if they want. And if not, they <strong>have his RFA rights</strong> and can use that leverage. If he's earned more money, it's because he's <strong>better for the team than he is today</strong> and that is a <strong>good thing</strong>.</div></div>
few things
"He's about the enter the wrong side of 30"...two years ago ovi was considered to be on the wrong side of 30. its just a stupid term.. and faksa best season is 33 points? his worse season is going to be like 25-30 haha I mean If the major difference between a "down year" and his best year is 5 points I think its not worth mentioning bc it doesnt really matter.... you could just say hes a consistent 30 point guy.....so is eller.
and penguins won 2 cups bc they had a guy like Bonino. no surprise they lost the year he wasn't on the team....
also players don't turn 30 and suck. eller will consistently be a 30 point guy till this deal ends...... faksa will also be a 30 point guy. at this point you are trading a dollar for 4 quarter....
eller is able to slot into a 2nd line center when hes needed to and knows our system and plays well within our system.... why risk getting a player that fits for a guy that cmight not fit well? esp if they are lateral players

I think one of the things you're missing in your valuation is the fact that Eller scored the arguably two most important goals in Caps playoff history. Cost control in contracts is something that's super valuable currently, especially with how contracts are going for the best players. Eller gives that cost control so that when it's time to re-up Backstrom and Ovechkin in a few years, we're not strapped.

Lehkonen vs Burakovsky
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CharlieFoxtrot</b></div><div>Burakovsky is loved by a lot of guys in Caps lockerroom and I would say one of the most universally popular in the room. He never once complained or sulked when he struggled and was scratched. Attitude is not the guys problem. Confidence and streaky play is.
And also, Burakovsky always tries. Sometimes he does the wrong thing or doesn't produce. But very rarely does he count or give poor effort. He'd be absolutely fine in any lockerroom.</div></div>

I love Lehkonen's hustle and he is pretty good defensively though I wish he would bury a few more goals. I am not sure this move will help either team, its a pretty sideways trade, I think Lehks has a better overall game and Burakovsky maybe better goal scoring potential though he has yet to really show it ...
