Ferland Value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canadianape</b></div><div>Ferland is a classic case of a standard third line player being placed with first and second line superstars and having his value inflated. it works in Carolina because his physical play and better than average shot compliment the smaller young superstar play makers you guys have. he had some of the same success with Calgary playing on a line with gaudreau and monahan but has certainly looked better in Carolina. if another team decides to sign him at his probable asking price of 4-5 million in all likelihood his play will revert to his real value as a third line player making that contract look atrocious. i would say the best option for him would be to stay in Carolina where something has obviously clicked. if a team can sign him for like 3 million he provides grit and depth scoring power but anything more is an over payment
kunitz when he was in Pittsburgh or chaison in edmonton are other examples to look at as players who are overvalued when playing with superstars</div></div>
Unfortunately i dont think Ferland accepts less than 5m. Hes going to get a Wilson contract.

Ferland Value
Bennett is the kind of player we will need in the playoffs - no way we trade him and a 1st to rent Ferland back.
Right now Ferly has 7 more points than Bennett and has been playing in top 6 all season- where is the sense?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FanBoy</b></div><div>17 goals has no value? Depth defencemen have no value? Kapanen is likely going to get paid, might as well get a younger similar prospect for him + deadline depth.
Frolik and Stone are both cap dumps as far as I'm concerned, Stone doesn't even play. Also they both have one year left after this season at combined 6.8M versus Russell alone at 4M. You don't think saving 2.8M in cap has any value to Calgary?
Might be right about Talbot but if CBJ decides to trade Bobrovsky, they might need someone who has more experience than Korpisalo for depth.</div></div>
Chaisson only has that many goals because he's been playing with McDavid. Take him off that line and he's lucky to hit 10 for the whol season. Petrovic could be had for a low level pick if they really wanted, not a young, talented, two way forward who's one of the top 5 fastest in the league. Yamamoto is not similar to Kapanen. Yamamoto is purely and offensive playmaker that struggles in his own end. Kapanen is a shoot first, two way player with tons of speed to burn. Yamamoto is no where close to Kapanen's level.
Frolik would be a cap dump, Stone is kinda a half cap dump. His salary isn't great but he's still a decent player when he plays. As said above though, if Calgary moves cap space out, they won't be looking to take any on. It'll be a move made to free up cap space for signings like Tkachuk and others. So it's not a fair deal for Calgary to make.
& Talbot's value has just been driven into the ground. With him being a UFA this summer, you might be lucky to get a 5th round pick outta him. Probably not much more

What a weird PIT trade! I don't know if I like it or not, it seems like the most lateral trade in hockey, haha! I mean exact same age, a little less money for Hornqvist and a little more play making opposed to a true shooter in Neal for a little more money and a few more career points. I think I would keep Neal cause Real Deal Pat Hornqvist doesn't ring as well.

Rarely are players traded with extensions and even less likely a player will get his full playing value in a trade. Sorry, when I see so many of these extensions signed just so Ottawa fans think they can get a big haul for expiring contracts it smacks of homer fantasy.

The one problem that irritates me all the time in this team
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canadianape</b></div><div>Every single player on Vegas other than Neal and Perron were playing leaps and bounds above their ability last year due to the extreme chemistry and underdog attitude they had. Washington had Carlson Niskanen and Orlov as their core.
never did I say that defense is all you need to win a Stanley cup {I didn't say you did} however you can't win a cup with zero defensive talent either {True}.
the three most winningest teams in the last decade all had a core 3 defensive guys when they won the cup.
Pittsburgh 2017: letang, Schultz, dumolin/hainsey
Pitt 2016: Schultz letang dumolin/ clendening
Chicago 2015: hjalmarsson, keith, seabrook
LA 2014: Doughty Green Muzzin Rehgehr
Chicago 2013: hjalmarsson, keith, seabrook
shall I go on? the point is teams that win Stanley cups have to be well rounded. currently the leafs are not well rounded</div></div>
Essentially, you're advancing three arguments here: (1) Las Vegas played "leaps and bounds above their ability" last year. According to that thinking, you expect them to revert to the mean this year. Well, we'll see, and then I'll owe you a beer if they don't win their division (MY division) this year. (2) You need a core of 3 outstanding defensemen to win the Cup. This may be true, or the last 5 years may be coincidental. (Good job reminding us of those teams.) The best team in my lifetime (NYI 1979-1984) had two world-class defensemen (Potvin and Morrow), 2 Jake Gardiner types and 2 heavy hitters, but maybe hockey is different now. (3) Teams that win Stanley Cups have to be well-rounded, but Toronto isn't. This has an element of truth, but the jury is still out because we haven't played this season. (The team posted is next year's, remember.) Last year's Leafs defense was better than all of the non-playoff teams' defenses and better than a few playoff teams' defenses. They may improve enough this year to merit the term "acceptably stout." With this offense, that would satisfy me and, I suspect, many Toronto fans.

Montreal Canadiens signed Hunter Shinkaruk (1 Year / $650,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canadianape</b></div><div>I agree and that's probably what Calgary saw when doing this trade. But I would posture that its equally likely that Shinkaruk gets better in Montreal so as I said nobody can pass judgment on this trade unless either of them becomes an NHL player in the future. and even if one of them does become an NHL player in the future there is no garuntee that would have happened with the team the were previously playing for.
perfect example is one that involves Shinkaruk.
Flames traded Markus Granlund to the Canucks for Shinkaruk. At the time no one really thought much about the trade cause both guys were fringe NHL players. Now however Shinkaruk is a second line AHL player and Granlund is a consistent NHL player. Flames lose big time but that's because the change in scenery and leadership in vancouver for Granlund brought out his full potential.</div></div>
Yeah some cheeky monkey in the Trade thread said Vancouver is the winner of the Shinkaruk-Rychel trade. They certainly fared better than the Leafs and the return in the Rychel (plus a 2nd) for 2 months of no-goatee Plekanec & Bobby Baun’s Grandson, LOL.

they apparently almost traded for Varly during the 2017 offseason. Before the Flames traded for smith, there was deal in place, Bennett for Varly was the frame work. I wouldnt be shocked if the teams hook up again to talk about this trade once again

Game Theory (Trade with Toronto)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canadianape</b></div><div>Your right the above trade isn't allot of assets or a terrible deal however when you throw a first and Gardiner in there it is a terrible deal for Toronto
All im trying to get across is that when doing trades like this you have to look at what the maximum value both teams can get out of the trade is and 90% of the time the teams are going to take that maximum value. In the history of these trades where a pick upgrade depends on the player signing. the player is worth the upgraded pick at the time of the trade. it is just protection for the team signing the player incase he decides to walk. they don't typically make these trades with 0 intention of signing the major player involved.
so at face value what the trade above represents is:
Gardiner/Levio/1st round pick for Johns/ 2nd round pick/ 3rd round pick
now doesn't that trade seem very one sided to you
but ya that's just my opinion man
kudos to you for coming up with something unique an getting people talking
IMO it just doesn't make any sense and I was trying to the best of my ability to explain why I think that way</div></div>
Assume for purposes of this trade that Toronto management has decided (a) it will not be advantageous to re-sign Gardiner in 2019, and (b) better to get something of value for him now rather than let him walk for free (I know there is a wildly opposite view about that). Assume also that the acquisition of Johns and his relatively inexpensive contract ensures that the Maple Leafs can keep the top 10 forwards, Rielly, Zaitsev, Dermott, Johns and Andersen together through 2020. That's why this trade has value for Toronto. Now re-consider the mutually-elevating draft pick idea. If after thinking it over again you think I'm nuts, fine.

Game Theory (Trade with Toronto)
Interesting idea but ultimately plays too hard to one side based off what the NHL works on. Teams consult agents ahead of trades all the time to ensure that a pending UFA is willing to stay with the team he is going to and most players under that elusive category of being able to choose anywhere they want to go, are simply happy to play anywhere they are compensated fairly. Teams still leave some negotiating room but for the most part, a rough contract extension is proposed to give an idea and to ensure there isn't a lack of understanding of what to expect when a deal is discussed.
Dallas's incentive is the get a really good offensive top 4 dman for a playoff push with the potential to resign him.
Toronto's incentive needs to be (at least if I were in their shoes) either equivalent future value or equivalent value at another position of need.
This trade does neither for them.
If the incentive isn't "incentivy" enough for Dallas, Toronto simply keeps the asset for the remainder of the contract. There's more value is keeping Gardiner on board for a playoff run and then losing him for nothing than there is in downgrading to Johns and worsening their picks, especially if he resigns.
Toronto should have no part in this trade. Unless however people have a higher regard of Johns than I do? i guess it'll be a little subjective but if what we have as basis for our thoughts is what the NHL has shown, this wouldn't fly in the slightest.
