They are, by taking RyJo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>Not sure the Avs would be interested in JP and they'd likely try to keep Ritchie out of any trade but if that's what it took I think they might do it for Sid. Returns for Sid would be a lot lower than a lot project because in a hypothetical scenario he'd almost certainly be asking to move and have control over where he went and the Pens daren't do wrong by him. The Avs would at least want some retention in this scenario as well.
The Avs don't need Allen at his cap hit (or even at 50% retained). He's unaffordable going forward and that's a pretty big overpay.</div></div>
JP is just a body, he's a contract to make things even out. And there's been talk CO has been interested in the past, and more Finns more Wins. Honestly you can make that whoever in your mind. I'd LOVE to keep Ritchie, but I think his value is too high right now to not use him in this. If they're willing to let go of either him or a first, I'm down with swapping another prospect like JLF or Behrens. Personally I think you want Allen or MAF as a mentor-backup to Georgiev and Annunen this year and maybe the next and this gets that. The price is prob high, but its to get him retained for two years.

Before you tear me apart, which I deserve, this is under the circumstance that Sid wants to leave to start the rebuild and basically only wants to go to CO to play with MacKinnon. We've seen things like that happen, and the return isn't as sky-high as we'd think. It's still high, but you know. Possible.
Also, I don't think Allen is as valuable as some think with that contract. So, I'm probably off there too.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MisstheWhalers</b></div><div>No way does Minnesota consider that.</div></div>
Yeah, this would have almost worked better if what went to Ari went to Minn instead to replace center needs, and swapped out Wagner instead of OO? IDK, it's still not quite there but at least it would have matched up better with 3 NHL level centers, one super high C prospect, plus Bo who has a ceiling of 1D, and another 1st.

Horse Tradin for a 2C
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>turtlemountain</b></div><div>Mittelstadt is an iffy 2nd liner who (I think) has been sheltered a bit defensively. Is he really a 2C on a contender?
Backup goalie - UPL has upside but is he really that much of an upgrade over the existing options in Colorado?
If you’re considering Jost to be the extra forward depth: he’s a $2M forward playing in the AHL. Too expensive for a call up and he takes up cap space in Loveland.
Erik Johnson is a significant downgrade on every roster defenseman from Colorado. He would play below JJ and maybe even Jones/Malinski for double the salary.
So at the end of the day you have:
Avs give up:
- 22 year old top 4 defenseman on a good contract
- a 1st round pick
- a 5th round pick
- a mediocre middle 6 C
- a bad forward who can be fully buried on waivers
For:
- a slightly less mediocre middle 6 C
- a slightly less mediocre backup
- an overpaid 6/7D on an awful contract
- a bad forward who cannot be fully buried on waivers
This is a really bad proposal.</div></div>
Look, I love Bo. But he's NOT a current top 4 defenseman. He's young and has the ability to be top pair. But he's not there and barely played like it this year. He's riding the struggle bus something heavy.
Man, your read on Casey Mittelstadt is wild. All the stats online says he's an underappreciated 2C. 59pts last year, 35 in 42 games this year, CF and xGF% well over 50. Put him on a line with Rants and Val? He's gonna be the next Kadri. Quality C is on a shortage this year and they're not likely to bid high enough to win Lindgren. This is a reasonable price to fixe 2C for probably a while
UPL is an okay goalie RIGHT NOW, but with some help from Jussi Parkkila he could be at the level of Frankie. You need that for the rest of the year to give Georgiev some rest and have a better space for Annunen to grow. When it's time, UPL will be a great trade piece, or options for who they want for backup/starter. No more getting left at the altar like with Grubauer.
EJ is better than you're giving him credit for and cheaper than you say this late in the season, half retained. He'd slot above JJ, and pair well with Malinski like he did with Girard. Makar/Toews, Girard/Manson, EJ/Malinski, JJ/Jones seems like a great Cup defense
Jost is what he is and if you don't agree than you probably never will. The money and bodies needed to make sense, and the org likes retreads. Plus he's fast, tenacious, and I think learned quite a bit from what he's been through and would put everything into a chance in CO again, especially in the playoffs. That and we know he's liked in the room.
My personal rule is, if it feels like a bit of an overpay but the other team probably is a bit unhappy, it's likely closer to reality. That's what I tried to hit while solving the issues.

Jost has passed waivers so you can keep him in Loveland for the rest of the year or call him up if there's injury need. EJ isn't $3m, he's 50% of what's left of that contract and you need him if Bo goes. The first and Bo is to solve the 2C with Middelstadt, and to get UPL as a quality backup, that's not worth nothing
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>turtlemountain</b></div><div>Island of misfit toys over here</div></div>
I mean kinda, but that's how you solve the problems of a contender in one go. The Avs need a 2C, backup goaltender, some extra forward depth, and some cap room. This solves all that and replaces a defensive spot that was lost. The price is steep but fair compared to what you're getting back. And it puts Bo in a place where he's able to grow with a young talented team, and Dermy could be the veteran Cogs-type roll.

They're getting one of the best goalies in the league on a killer contract, getting rid of Campbell's bad one for free, a first and two seconds. That's a great get for a center who doesn't do a lot of defense and has the right to say no to any trade. You're not getting top value out of him right now, no matter what. This might rescue two team's playoff chances and GM issues in one shot

I partially agree. I think it should be Kaut instead of Bowers, and Burakovsky is a trade-then-sign deal. He plays better the higher up your lineup you put him, and he's starting to go lower on the depth chart if the Avs add like this, so it would make sense for both teams, IMHO. Murray can play RD, if I recall correctly, and has with CO.

Avalanche Trade Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>No need to revisit Donskoi.</div></div>
I personally think Donskoi is having a career bad year and being misused. I think both the team and the player would be willing to try again, and especially if he's half-price. He's a big time playoffs producer and isn't easy to push off the puck. I bet Seattle is willing to get a player like JTC that can play Center and needs a bit of a change of scenery. He's young enough to stick around during the build but could be flipped for half-price to a contender if they wanted later.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mintyfresh</b></div><div>Few things. I don't know that he is signing back in Philly if he is traded. How often does that ever happen. Its always brought up, but rarely happens. Honestly Ottawa's roster has more potential than the Flyers anyway.
As for the other Hall trade. A lot of stuff was going on with that Hall trade.
Sabres were in a real bad way as an organization and Hall had demanded to be traded. He also wasn't really playing that well. Giroux is maybe the only flyer playing well. Plus he is a captain and face of the franchise. Hall was not that for Buffalo. Trading Giroux is a big blow to fans (even if they sound ready to trade him), its a strong message to the locker room as well. To make it worth the Flyers while, they'll have to be overwhelmed with an offer to trade Giroux.</div></div>
Well, let's not pretend Philly isn't in a bad way as an organization right now either. Their biggest possible trade piece has all the cards, has the right to feel like his career has been wasted, and the team won't be ready for a real run before he has to retire. The more you pump him up, the more he has the right to be offended at the team.
From everything we know, he's really attached to the club and the fans, if he may be soured on the front office. So to me, there are two options. He would either want to go the Ray Bourque route to chase a Cup with a serious contender for a short term, either one or two years. To me, the best chance of that, besides somewhere like Pittsburgh or Washington that he fought against his whole career, would be Colorado. It gets some pieces back without either hurting his chance at a Cup or hurting Philly. Or he feels extremely angry at the Philly front office and wants free. In that case, he isn't likely to give them a gift of a bunch of trade pieces just to again hurt wherever he's going. The most likely option is to ride out until UFA and go where he most wants for next year, free and clear.

Avalanche Trade Deadline
I get that the return for Giroux is low, but I think when the time comes it'll be something like this. I'll add Kaut to make it a bit better. But he gets final say on where he goes and there's a shortage of strong contenders that aren't old hated competitors or can afford something big. Plus, everyone knows he's signing back in Philly in UFA so it doesn't pay to give everything away for 3 months of him, no matter how awesome he is.

Cap Whoas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>I see where you're coming from, but I disagree. That's like saying that every captain in the league will sign for less than market value. I don't disagree that Rantanen took a bit of a discount, but he also took less term than he could have got, so that he could sign another deal when he turns 28. Given that Landy is at that point now, there's no reason why he shouldn't get a reasonable long-term pay day, especailly given that this is likely the last chance he's got to get one.
Fun-ish fact: Joe Sakic's last contract paid him more than this offer.</div></div>
I see where <em>you're</em> coming from, I just disagree. I'm not talking about all captains, I'm talking about this one. He'd go fight anyone in the league for his guys, and I don't think anyone would argue that. And while I do see your point about this contract vs Sakic's, it's two different players and two different eras. It used to be a player got paid for what he <em>previously</em> had done, so the older contracts were massive. That's kinda going away now. You're getting paid more for what you are right now. We can argue whether that's better for the players or not, but it is what it is. Second, as much as I love him, Landeskog will likely never make it to the HoF like Sakic was a first ballot no-brainer. They're two completely different players and comparing their contracts isn't super useful.
The other side is what I hope happens that we never find out about until later. I hope that whatever happens on the paper contract, there's a handshake agreement with Landy and Sakic that he never puts on another sweater in the NHL. They never trade him, once he can't get a big long contract they go full Thornton and resign him each year he feels he can keep playing, and he decides who his replacement is (likely Makar). I want him to retire an Av and hang that jersey.

Yeah, that's the biggest gap here honestly. But everything I read says Cale Makar is the most team-centered guy they've ever met. All about taking care of his guys, leading with character, being the example, thinking long-term despite his age. My argument for this team is that this is a group of players that have bought into themselves and each other. They would rather have their name engraved on the Stanley Cup once or more than have a couple few more million dollars at the end of a contract. That's how you build a solid locker room that gets points in 15 straight games, the coach isn't in there yelling at them. They police themselves, they're bought in from top to bottom. That's already showing in lesser contracts and I think it'll continue to do so in bigger ones.

Ef that.</div></div>
Because even Rantanen didn't get as much as others have, all told. MacKinnon is on a hugely cheap contract, continues to say he likes it, and promises to sign low next contract again. This specific group of dudes have bought into each other to try to put together a dynasty in the current cap climate, and if you're the GM that played both before and after the cap came into the league and that happened in your locker room, you sign guys to whatever you can get them to put pen to paper for. I can't imagine that the captain of the team isn't leading the charge in team-friendly deals, IMHO.

Yeah, honestly I hope Seattle takes Compher for everyone's account. I honestly think Compher needs a change of scenery to get to the next level, and I don't know if this type of team is best for his style. He can build from the ground up like the guys in Vegas did. The cap worries are much less in Seattle and they don't have to pay anything to get him. Plus, that allows the Avs to trade Graves to any number of teams that would like a nice stay at home defenseman and have some serious return available. Or maybe Graves can stay put and turn into EJ 2.0, who knows?

He's 100% bought into the system and posted back to back career years during the pandemic. I don't see how you get rid of that dude for free to Seattle. You make him your 6/7th save and let the Kraken decide whether they want Compher or Graves. Donskoi already scored an overtime goal against you, do you want that again? I know I wouldn't. The issue I see is EJ's health and the big PK minutes Graves eats, including literally eating pucks. But they're doing better about making that a systems thing, so he's becoming less necessary specifically and able to be recreated in aggregate.
