Comparing Zegras to other RFA Trades w 4 YRs of Control
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caufield</b></div><div>Ahh makes sense, I understand more what you trying to do. I think Reinbacher would make more sense if you are trying to follow that model since he is similar to Sergachev in terms of prospect situation</div></div>
I considered Reinbacher, but a) you don’t trade a top draft pick NOT even a year into the season, b) he filled a massive need at RD and is presumed to be Lane Hutson’s future partner and c) How does trading Reinbacher not get PR flack and enrages the entire fan base, after passing on Michkov? Management is all in on Reinbacher succeeding, arguably more so than Slaf imo.
That being said, the Habs have the most intriguing prospects and young talent available. They realistically could beat any other team for Zegras, if they wanted to and ANA lacks PWR FWDs and elite RHD.

I don’t actually believe Slaf would be in a Zegras deal. The game has changed a lot in the past 7 years. With advanced analytics and a steady cap for the past few years, teams are more cautious about parting with top prospects, promising young players on ELCs now than ever before.

And Slafkovsky value is higher than Sergachev was. Not sure MTL should be adding a pick.
I think if a trade was to be made for Zegras, it would have been for MTL 5th overall pick at the 2023 draft.</div></div>
This is true, I admit it’s not a perfect comp, but it’s close enough and I think there’s an argument for it, which is why I included it. Drouin and Zegras were both high picks, and both hyped as players who are fringe stars, but have/had another untapped level to their game.
Any trade would have been done near the draft, I also agree. It’s tough now because most teams are against the cap right now. I forgot to add picks would be conditional based on games, like the Drouin trade. And yes, Slafkovsky has better value than Sergachev at the time. This is more of a best offer and I think of all teams, the Habs control the table in a Zegras deal compared to the other teams.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pretzelcoatl</b></div><div>I take issue with the Drouin comp. Although he was the same age as Zegras is now, their production is very different in the two years leading up to the trade.
Drouin 15-16: 39 pt pace
Drouin 16-17: 60 pt pace
Zegras 21-22: 67 pt pace
Zegras 22-23: 66 pt pace
On top of that, Zegras is an extremely marketable fan favorite. It should take more than Slafkovsky and a 2nd to get it done imo.</div></div>
It’s difficult to find up and coming star players who get moved right after their ELC. It’s very rare and usually the team that drafted them will give an extension. I get what you are saying though and my idea was Drouin was also an up and coming player that had another untapped level (hindsight, he never broke through). Many are saying about Zegras, though we can all admit Zegras is a much better player than Drouin was at the time.

100%. Give him every chance to succeed. It’s really now or never at this point and this team needs a right handed sniper for the long term.

I would think Hughes worked on his face offs during the offseason and this would be a line that would take offensive draws for the most part. Haula, Hughes, Holtz is a good line as well and you can bump Mercer to center.

I was a little surprised as well. Meier and Holtz are both shoot first players and Hischier is going to log the most difficult minutes on ice. I think Holtz’s skill set would be better served with Bratt and Hughes, but giving Holtz any Top 6 minutes is a win in my book. This is big season for him and I hope he flourishes!

Minnesota Wild signed Calen Addison (1 Year / $825,000 AAV)
I expected slightly more term and a higher cap hit. That’s some tidy business from Guerin and it’s clear as day Addison is on a prove-it deal.
My only question is Why didn’t another team offer sheet him?

Good Draft from Chicago
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>Moore at 19 is an absolute dream scenario. How he made it that far is beyond my understanding.</div></div>
GM Kyle Davidson agrees with our assessment. He was trying to trade up to select him. I’m so surprised he fell to 19. A+ pick, A- draft for Davidson. Only thing that prevents an A was getting a 3rd 1st. I understand Perreault was there, but you can’t pass on a guy who was going higher than Perreault in every draft, arguably the best skater in the draft, and is known for playing with everyone and elevating his linemates. It’s very clear Chicago wants to build a team off speed and transition.
Tank year was justified. It feels good to finally start seeing the light. We will look back at this draft as the turning point of this franchise.

They have goalies in their pipeline (none that are elite, but reliable) and while Askarov is good, paying a 1st and two 2nds for a guy who’s never played a game in the NHL is a major risk and terrible asset management. Blackhawks will keep their 2 Top 25 picks next year, unless a young player gets shopped and you can’t pass up on acquiring him.

Hawks decline first two trades. This is bad asset management. With the picks they made tonight, it’s clear they’re moving forward with the rebuild with an emphasis on speed and transition. They have no interest in dealing firsts unless it’s young players coming off their ELCs that can grow with this new core.
This is a team that will build through the draft. Korchinski, Bedard and Moore (I still don’t know how he fell to 19) will be cornerstones for a new era of Blackhawks Hockey and they’ll continue to stay the course with the long rebuild.
It’s funny how Davidson was working the phones to try to trade up for Moore and they still got their guy anyways. Cristall at 35 please!

Hawks have their 1-2C punch for the next 15 years with those two, and if either one needs to transition to wing, Reichel/Nazar can also play C. The top end speed Moore has is exciting, I'll take that Dylan Larkin comp all day at 2C. Slam dunk for the Hawks.</div></div>
Yea, you can’t miss with either. I think Moore makes more sense though. They wanted to secure the Center positions and build down the middle. Never say never with Perreault though! The Rangers are a graveyard for prospects. The Hawks could buy him in a Dach-esque deal down the road.

Would’ve loved to have taken a swing in the first round, since this is a deep draft. I like Meier and Toffoli more though. I’m confident Fitzy will find a gem in the 2nd, like Seamus Casey. There’s a lot of talent available on the board. Future is bright.

If these moves don’t pan out in favour of Kent Hughes, he’s going to be heavily scrutinized by fans and many will look back to this draft as a massive letdown and lost opportunity. I like the Hutson - Reinbacher pair, but there was better on the table.

Good Draft from Chicago
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TMLBRIAN</b></div><div>It's hard to judge since I haven't seen most of these kids play. But on paper, a big head scratcher is Minnesota taking Stramel at 21, instead of Perrault. Perrault dropped 132 pts in 63 games, which was more than his teammates Will Smith and Leonard, who went 4th and 8th. (pts aren't everything of course). Where Stramel only put up 12 pts in 33 NCAA games. Stramel is MASSIVE at 6'3, 222 lbs, but that to me means that he is already in his man body and couldn't produce. I get that he is also a local but that should be a tie breaking factor, not a main factor.
On paper this Minnesota pick doesn't make sense to me. They should have gone with Perrault.
That's my rant of the draft haha</div></div>
Minnesota went for position over BPA. We all knew the Wild were in the hunt for a big center with a 2 way game and can do board work for Kaprizov. Don’t know if Stramel is that guy, but you just can’t pass on Perreault. I will say this, the Rangers are a place for prospects to die. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s traded and pops off elsewhere.

Yea, I liked Perreault too. I just think Davidson wants to build this team down the middle. There’s nothing wrong with that and getting a guy like Moore (who was slipping in the draft) is A+ work by GM Davidson. You need players who can play with everyone and elevate your linemates and Moore is that guy.

Given how terrible the free agent market is, and he is still U25, in a vacuum (like the draft) where moves happen quick it’s possible. I wouldn’t bet on it, but it’s a non zero chance it happens. Plus Sharangovich isn’t a rental either, he has two RFA years left.

What a haul for Colorado. The draft picks are much preferred than banking on Newhook hitting. This gives the Avs a lot of opportunities that they previously didn’t have.
Edit: Having 3 Top 40 picks is nice, very nice.
