We'll send Campbell to Laval, he will find his mojo again, Toronto will call, we'll trade him to Toronto and after 2 losses he will end his career on LTIR

Regardless if people don't like this, I think something very close to this is a realistic deal that both sides could get behind.
I do think that MTL should try to move Anderson (or Gallagher) with retention in this deal if possible.

As a hardcore Habs fan, and if I was Habs GM, I would decline the Armia trade.
DECLINED.
Because out of respect for my GM counterpart, that trade offer is way too awful for Calgary fans.
Ok, sure, I'll take a 3rd rounder for Armia, that's it. I would STILL feel I'm totally winning this trade on all counts.
Even for a single 4th round pick, it's an automatic yes for Habs GM.

I think Barron and Xhekaj should go to Laval anyway. Even without Petry.
Mathesson - Savard
Guhle - Kovacevic
Harris - Wideman
But yea if Petry stays, then everyone on the Right side moves down 1 notch. Wideman becomes #7 & Barron/Xhekaj come in when needed.

It’s tough to only get a 3rd and a 7th for retaining on Petry for 2 years considering what Petry offers at a very reduced cap hit. But I understand where your head is at and I agree on the sentiment.
The Allen one is a bit tougher, he hasn’t been that great in Montreal (on paper) and he has quite a few groin injuries.
Also did Slafkovsky get deleted from existence in this world 😂.

Spite Goals for 2023 season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bigphil</b></div><div>The real problem is the taxation rate in Canada. Out of 4 teams in the last dance were states that had no provincial income taxes. Vegas, Dallas and Florida. Players don't negociate salary but in the pocket revenu. A player will accept a contract for 20% less to play for Vegas. It is the same with Dallas and Florida. And I don't talk about weather and other things... 20 % least and you've got $16 millions more to spend for a good 2nd pair Dmen and a better goalie and a top 6 winger. It is not fair but the NHL like it this way. The only way to win a cup in Canada is a pandemy or a extremely good group of younters that build chemistry together or a magnificiant goalie like in 1993 series. Sorry to have shrink your bubble.</div></div>
All fair points. I agree that it is harder to win in a High taxation state/province.
That being said: Players who play in major hockey markets get opportunities that others don't. Any star player that signs with the Habs for example, will have access to McDonald's & Tim's advertising dollars that are usually reserved for the Crosbys and McDavids of the league, because the commercials air in French.
Suzuki & Caufield for example will make more money off ad-revenue than off their salaries over the course of their careers and I'm fairly sure they can do that through corporations that can use tax deferral strategies that negate any of the disadvantages you are referring to.
Other than business considerations, players like to sign where they think they have a chance to win. I believe the Leafs would have won the cup if it had not been for the pandemic and the flat cap. They "should" have had money/cap to fix their Blueline, but all the money was spent on the forward group with a stagnant cap.

Mantha and more maybe the playoff
I can see this happening, but WASH would need to add a pick going to Mtl. Not for player value but for Cap Space retention.
Not a 1st or 2nd.. Best would be a 3rd rounder (with a condition that Habs would get the lowest of their picks in the 3rd) but more rational would be a 5th round.

Using 2 of 3 retentions at the start of the year would indicate we are not planning to be sellers at the TDL. Is that how you see it?

Hopefully if the Leafs are paying a 1st for a defenseman, they go with one who can actually play defense. Someone like an Orlov, Zub, Gavrikov, or any of the other half dozen guys who are likely to get 1sts above Edmundson.

Leafs pass. If we trade for a dman it will be a right d or a guy like Chychrun.
So far this year Drouin and Dadonov have not shown anything worthy of getting any picks back. I assumed at the start of the year that they could get a 2nd or 3rd for them half retained at the deadline, but they have not done anything. I would be shocked if they get something.
Monahan on the other hand will surely fetch a 2nd + if he is half retained.

Few players taking a great part of your salary cap. Look at the Leafs., they won't even make a 2nd round apparition this year. If you want me to have a diagnosic of your (Detroit) poor contract signing and poor drafting I can help you. By the way, your team have won a few stanley Cups in the last 20 years. Great.</div></div>
