Not worth giving Tanev 6-years to reduce the cap hit by a few 100K or even 1M. His contract will no doubt become an issue sooner rather than later. More than likely, the latest that would happen is by the second half of Matthews' current contract, when results will matter the most. If Matthews re-signs, he's going to be taking probably 15M+ until he's 37/38, so every million will have to be well spent. If he's available, then 4.5Mx2 or 4Mx3 is the most that they should offer in terms of AAV and term.

I agree, but for some reason I feel like tanev is going to want something like 6M on a short term deal. Toronto needs the cap room to add a second D and a forward. Toronto can also choose to throw him on Robidas island if it becomes an issue like they always do. We will see July 1st!

He might, but I would much prefer 6Mx2 than 3.75Mx6. If the Leafs land Roy, there really is no need to jump hoops to sign Tanev. They'll still need another top 4D, but they would be better served getting someone who could produce some offense since McCabe (he'll be extended) and Roy are more defensive guys.You don't want Rielly being the only guy who can easily produce offense from the backend.

Honestly I don't think he's leaving DAL anyways. They want to sign him and he has interest and now news just came out that they will be buying out Suter which pretty much confirms to me that they will be re-signing him.
