Last Hoorah Chicago Blackhawks

Description
As part of my ceremonial grieving process and tribute to CapFriendly, which will soon no longer be accessible for public use, I have decided to do one last hoorah and do every team's offseason as I would do it. What better way to send off CapFriendly than to be called an idiot by every single fanbase online? Cheers to CapFriendly and its users.

My biggest pet peeve with the Hawks the last few years is I feel like they could be doing even more trading for bad contracts and getting assets (even if they're small) rather than signing their own bad contracts to get to the cap floor.

I would not take Korpisalo for that return. And buying him out is a terrible move. You are handicapping yourself over 1 mil a year during the years they'll start to be competitive. for a 2nd and 3rd. They have enough draft capital. What they won't have enough of is cap space while they still wait for the buyout cap to clear.

I guess this trade adds up when you realize the poster is a sens fan.

Yeah but they have mostly signed them on their own rather than taking on other team's bad deals, which they've only done a little bit

Yeah it actually is probably a bad example now that I really look how long the buyout is. Main point would be that they should be taking on another bad contract or two and maximize assets. They could also just keep the player in this case

Signing any LD, let alone Gustafsson, is not going to happen. They have a plethora of young LD who need ice time. Hawks will look to add at RD.

In a sense, I think it is a smart play. Give a consistent role model for the younger players to aspire to rather than a revolving door of disgruntled or aging veterans cast off from other teams. If they're leaders like Foligno, it makes even more sense, especially since they've cleverly set it up so that their contracts all expire the same year as Bedard's ELC.

Edit: Interesting to see if having that stable presence makes a difference in the speed of their rebuild vs. the 7-yr quagmire that is OTT frown

Ottawa gave lots of contracts to stable veterans for way too much money with the argument of "the young guys need this" or they paid to take on bad contracts, and then had to clean it up while trying to be competitive for the first time. (Not saying that's gonna happen with Chicago because of the points you made, but just saying I don't think the way you've described the Ottawa situation is necessarily as it occurred)

And my argument is not that you shouldn't have stable guys like Foligno. My argument is that you don't need to constantly overpay the Mrazeks and Athanasious of the world when you can sign those guys for normal deals and take on other bad contracts to pick up even more assets.

Rebuilding or not, cap space should be used in a way to maximize value. If teams at the cap are desperate for it, that only makes yours more valuable
