This could easily be just a package starting point, depending on how much leverage Winnipeg has. If McGroaty does change his tune, but Winnipeg feels they can get loads of assets for him, the package will change a lot, probably centred around a win-now move, rather then just getting futures.

Jets decline Jets are going to get fair value for mcgroaty which this isn't. Look at how Chevy handled Dubois. 2c top 4 rhd are the needs and that deal has none of those

Completely different scenario, you're talking about an unproven prospect with loads of talent compared to a player with proven NHL experience to include the playoffs, although PLD is, well PLD but still.

The Jets aren't giving McGroarty away for a late first and low quality package that does nothing for them.

There would need to be one quality piece in there.

Barron definitely fills the need of the top 4 RHD, as he would slot in well on the 2nd pairing. And the WPG 1st makes sense to send back. In a nutshell this is likely one of a combination of offers similar that is being offered to Winnipeg, Peg fans won't be happy to hear that though. Might need to fill an additional hole in their roster but no matter what they're going to ask for the sun, moon, and stars for a guy who hasn't kissed NHL ice yet.

If Barron isn't a top 4 D on a team which is at the bottom of the league, what makes you think he's good enough to be a top 4 D on a team that finished 5th last season?

Who said he isn't a top 4 dman where he's at now? You do realize Montreal has a plethora of defense right? Hence the reason some have been made available?

Perhaps Savard goes back in the deal with retained salary as well. Chevy might be sold on solidifying his defence with a cheap reliable vet.

Adding a 34 YO declining bottom pairing defenseman won't make a difference. You'd need to add to dump that contract.
