Description
Gaudreau's value is likely still at it's highest right now, so, I'll look at getting value return. Question is, WHO can afford to take him and is willing to offer that value? My pick for that, NJD.
---
Before anyone craps ont he Brouwer trade...VGK have to get rid of Dmen, and by taking Brouwer in return it gives them a veteren forward to work with all the kids they'll have in the first few years. Sure they have James Neal, but only for 1yr. Beyond that I only see really 2 vets beyond year 1. Pretty sure Perron will move along once he hits UFA. So it does seem like a win/win on the surface. AT least in my mind.
---
Wilson for Hathaway. Similar in size, only 2 yrs age difference. Hathaway would get a more steady role in WSH where if he stays here it'll be bus rides through Cali again this year. Wilson moves right onto the wing with Bennett and Ferland moves down to fill out that 3rd line who would be a BEAST to play against.
---
So I see it as finally having 2 real good scoring lines, a 3rd line who will run people over and still could contribute more than their fair share of points and a 4th line with the rookie JANKO who can be handled with care as he gets comfortable at the NHL level.

You could argue that there isn't that much hockey difference between Gaudreau and Palemeiri. Gaudreau plays with better players but costs over 2m a year more.
Soon, as I see reasons why players would be a better fit with another team..."to work with the kids", "leadership", I know it's a 4.5m bad deal, thought 1.5m retention is a realistic touch in this trade.

Only way I see Johnny hockey going to the devils is if hall is the center piece for the trade for the devils not palmieri. I'm sure vegas can find a similar playing style veteran as Brouwer for less cap if they really wanted a player like that. I like the idea of nyquist because we wouldn't have to give up as much as usual because Detroit would be trying to move his contract.

Like the VGK and DET deals (still painful to see more draft picks head out the door), but strongly dislike the NJ deal. Palmieri is very good, but Johnny is an elite game-breaker on a great contract. Guys who can put up +75 points for under $7M aren't easy to come by. CGY would certainly not need to add Kulak to that deal, and NJ would need to improve the picks coming back. In the end, it wouldn't work for both sides.

Gaudreau has only put up 75+ in one season so far, and I just don't see him getting to that number going forward. In fact (and I'd really like to be wrong on this) but I don't see him even hitting 25 goals for a long, long time. Teams have figured out that if you play him tight and tough he wilts and becomes ineffective. He's become a "pass first" type of guy. The 2 years he had slightly higher goal totals was because he was surprising goalies by shooting from everywhere, now all he does is look for someone to pass off too. Even on the rush all he does now is cross the blue line and stop, doesn't try to beat the D to get in closer. Just looks to dump it off and then basically vanishes. It's not like he heads to the front of the net, or is dancing in the offensive zone looking for open ice.

That's all just how I see it when I watch the games live or on TV. Monahan is suffering playing with JG, because if he's not doing all the scoring that line would be completely useless. Johnny's either gotta go, or he needs to be dropped down the lineup, because for 6.75mil he needs to be a 35 G guy or it's a waste of money.
