It's basically a real life CHEL trade. Vegas is cap strapped but they have a couple core guys on expiring deals. They do their same salary cap magic, but they move a couple guys who are going to command too much cap after next season (always Theodore, sometimes see Thompson or Karlsson or a younger guy). Their logic being: pay 1 guy a lot rather than 2 guys a lot. Theodore is going to be an 8 million dollar guy so it does make sense to move him since they already signed their 8mil LD in Hanafin.
The issue is this year though. In this trade, LV takes on 4m in cap space for this coming. Whereas they are already in a position where they need to dump about 10m just to get under the cap. For this year. Forget the year after etc.
For a TO/LV trade to work, TO would have to take back MORE money then they give up. Not less. LV is not in the taking on cap space business right now. They are in the dumping cap space business.
The issue being, all of LV's players who have big dollars 1) have trade protection of some kind and 2) are guys they probably dont want to give up and would need to replace.
To take on Marner, TO would have to take back Petro and Theodore. Or Karlsson and Theodore (even thats probably no quite enough). Problem is, there isnt a way to really make those trades work. LV doesnt want to give those guys up. They dont want to leave. And TO doesnt really wanna take on their extra cap.
For a deal like this one to work. LV would have had to dump 5 or 6m in cap space on someone else before this trade happens.
