I heard Marner is being traded for Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr.

Pesce is looking for $6m per x 6yrs or more. - was offered $6m shorter term by CAR and declined the offer.

Roy gets $5.5-$6.5 via free agency - no way he signes for $4.75

Stephenson is a waste on the wing - 3C is where he belongs - but with the NYI trade - he's the wrong allocation of funds.

Brossoit is a waste at $2.75m - dunno why Leaf fans have such a hard on for this guy all of the sudden - career backup - Jones is the same guy at less than half the price - just re-sign Jones for 1x$1m and let Woll take the ball and run with it (as long as he can stay healthy).

Cowan on the top line is a mistake too - he isn't ready for that role... YET. And Minten is wasted on the 4th line too. Put MInten and Cowan in the AHL for a year or 2 as linemates and let them get some checmistry and "big biy" experience before rushing them to the main roster.

10x the value? no. Plus... Marner ain't likely to waive his NTC to go play for Lou on the Island.

Here is a great example of how you can say, "I hate the leafs" without saying it. 10 times the value eh? A top 5 RW in the entire game is 10 times less valuable than a 24 year old defenceman? Sure Dobson puts up the points but still has some major faults defensively. Either he's the most valuable defenceman in the world or you just think Marner sucks because of the jersey he wears.

You have picks on wrong side in Flyers trade and they would still decline every single player except Jarnkrok maybe for a late pick if they trade Laughton. And yes I get it that they're not meant to be a package. But maybe some other team bites.

Wasn't it Lou who wouldn't give Mitch his rookie bonuses?

Mitch of course ended up getting that money in his next contract with Dubas.

consider this: there's a third magical option where I've just looked at the economics of this league and understand something - contracts matter. team control matters. In a vacuum, Dobson is more valuable than Marner, of course. He plays the more valuable position, he's cheaper, and doesn't have the playoff ghost reputation. Neither is top five at their position, but both are pretty high up the ladder (cmon, marner isn't the best RW on his own team).

Now, let's take the contract situation into play. The easy part: the more valuable player gets piad $4M, and the other guy gets paid $11M. edge Dobson. More importantly, Dobson has a year left on his deal before he is a restricted free agent. Momentously important. The team that has Dobson will either be able to come to a contract extension with the player, or get significant value in trade. The team with Marner, who has a full NMC has no such guarantee. At the end of next season the player could simply walk away, leaving them with nothing, and he can block any trade if you attempt to get value for the player mid-season.

Then, take a look at the next contract. Players in their prime hitting the UFA market are pretty unlikely to take a paycut, so have to think Marner will be in the $12.5 range at least, right? Dobson, the better player at the more important position probably around $8M? $8.5M?

so throw aside this, "woe is me, everyone is out to get the leafs," defensive BS, and realize that there might be other objective truths that you're not seeing because it's very tough to see with your head in the sand.

bahahhahaha - a well thought out theory based on common sense, and objective fact and that's all you have? leafs fans are so precious. at this point i kind of want you guys to win three rounds in a year for the first time in franchise history just so you don't go off the deep end and declare war. ahhh too cute.

Well thought out but you ignore the very obvious fact that if Marner waives his NMC he's going to come with an extension. Why would he waive and not sign? There is no "well thought out" reasoning to explain why 8 years of Marner, a 100 point Selke finalist, is not worth an immense package. Go find me a list of players who have averaged more points over the past 5 seasons and then tell me he's not worth a lot.

we've seen pending UFAs moved and instantly sign an extension before. it doesn't impact value much. mark stone would be a prime example.

Just cherry pick the best trade to lower the value eh? As expected. We both know there isn't a reasonable conversation here. Or at least I know it. You very clearly have a big negative bias against the Leafs, either knowingly or unknowingly. If it's knowingly, you are just here to tell Leaf fans Marner sucks and is worthless for your own amusement. If it's unknowingly, then you aren't worth talking to. Those who can't handle their emotions enough to have rational conversations are people I have no time for.

Completely different situation. Lesser players who were traded at the trade deadline. Cherry picking more irrelevant trades to make your obvious nonsensical opinion make a bit more sense. You may as well just say, Marner and all Leaf players are garbage and are worthless. It's actually a reasonable statement considering it's just you spouting your leaf hate for the sake of it. You have no rational takes here beyond that. Honesty is its own reward.

alright what do you want here? I gave you an example of a player better than marner, and you just toss that aside as a steal. players you deem lesser than marner, and they don't matter. is your head so far buried in the sand that you're just going to ignore everything under the sun in order to lie to yourself?
