Quoting: RipNasty
Here is a great example of how you can say, "I hate the leafs" without saying it. 10 times the value eh? A top 5 RW in the entire game is 10 times less valuable than a 24 year old defenceman? Sure Dobson puts up the points but still has some major faults defensively. Either he's the most valuable defenceman in the world or you just think Marner sucks because of the jersey he wears.
consider this: there's a third magical option where I've just looked at the economics of this league and understand something - contracts matter. team control matters. In a vacuum, Dobson is more valuable than Marner, of course. He plays the more valuable position, he's cheaper, and doesn't have the playoff ghost reputation. Neither is top five at their position, but both are pretty high up the ladder (cmon, marner isn't the best RW on his own team).
Now, let's take the contract situation into play. The easy part: the more valuable player gets piad $4M, and the other guy gets paid $11M. edge Dobson. More importantly, Dobson has a year left on his deal before he is a restricted free agent. Momentously important. The team that has Dobson will either be able to come to a contract extension with the player, or get significant value in trade. The team with Marner, who has a full NMC has no such guarantee. At the end of next season the player could simply walk away, leaving them with nothing, and he can block any trade if you attempt to get value for the player mid-season.
Then, take a look at the next contract. Players in their prime hitting the UFA market are pretty unlikely to take a paycut, so have to think Marner will be in the $12.5 range at least, right? Dobson, the better player at the more important position probably around $8M? $8.5M?
so throw aside this, "woe is me, everyone is out to get the leafs," defensive BS, and realize that there might be other objective truths that you're not seeing because it's very tough to see with your head in the sand.
