I thought of this trade idea when I was trying to get a waiver exempt goalie to Toronto in one of my armchair GM posts. Markstrom to Jersey seems pretty locked in, I doubt Jersey wants to give up any of their young dmen, so in this version, they send out one of their excess goalies for a right shot D with some upside for Calgary. Toronto needs to remake their D core, probably at the expense of Liljegren's roster spot. And Calgary gets a young potential top 4 right shot D to try out and a young former top 5 pick forward to boost that side.

Calgary doesn't want Liljegren. They're looking for a top 4 D not a 7th D. This isn't close for Markstrom either.

I mean, I did say potential top 4 D. To call Lilly a 7th D is outrageous. All of his numbers will tell you he's a minimum 4/5 D and the Leafs have never used him properly because they seem to think they need to play giant pilons like Lyubushkin, Edmundson, and Justin Holl in the playoffs when it counts. To call Liljegren a 7th D just suggests your a Leafs hater. None of his stats say that.

He's a fit problem for the Leafs. They have to change the mix and they can't move Rielly or McCabe and they just re-signed Benoit. You can't bring back 4 of the 6 guys from that D core that needs to change.

If you take the Leafs side out, this is the Devils giving up their best prospect a top 10 goalie prospect (which admittedly doesn't mean much), another mid prospect and 2 picks for a 35 year old goalie making 6 million for 2 more years. I don't know how much more you would be expecting. Maybe make that 2nd a conditional 1st but it's not going to be much more than this in return unless they can create a bidding war.
