You alr have a cheap starter. Holmberg is a cheap, young, decent bottom 6er. SDA and Cade Webber are decent prospects. You still have a good top 4 d-men. You get Mitch marner. If you take out the third it’s fair

U take 1 year of 11 mil and 2.4 from kampf and tavares. Tavares has played w bedard and can mentor him. Meanwhile u get 2 young players and a free 4th. What do u have to lose here

Abruzzese is nothing more than a minor leaguer, Villeneuve is at best a bottom pair guy. Those two plus a 4th round pick is nowhere near close enough for taking $13.4m of cap from the Leafs this season for Tavares and Kampf plus an additional two seasons of Kampf at $2.4m per.

the Hawks won’t have any need for the minor leaguers. Taking on Kampf’s contract is worth a 2nd round pick on its own and Tavares’s $11m cap hit for this season will cost at minimum a 1st round pick. There might be a contending team that would take Tavares for free, if you can find one with the cap space, but not a rebuilding team.

Please don’t tell me Tavares’s 3 or 4 games of experience playing with Bedard carries any weight in the decision process. Additionally, when it come to JT’s ability to mentor and lead young players I have just one question to ask… what happened in Toronto? He had one of the youngest and most talented rosters to “mentor” and he lead them to a grand total one of playoff round victory.

1- Tavares isn't going to Waive
2- If the leafs can get him to waive it is for one reason: they don't want his contract so they have little to no leverage in this situation. Is JT a good player? 100%. Is he worth 11 million? No. Are the teams who would want a Tavares caliber player good teams? Yes. Do most have the cap? No. Are the teams who can take his full 11 million good? Probably not

Chicago would take JT either with a 1/2 round pick pick, for FC or for a mid-late round pick (3-7 rounder)

He won't waive his NMC

Assuming Tavares is willing to waive, if the Leafs pay his $7m signing bonus on 7/1, the Hawks MIGHT take JT after that for future considerations. The rest of that package is of zero interest to the Hawks.

If you think having cap space means we are giving up anything for him, you are very sorely mistaken. Having cap space means we are one of VERY FEW teams who CAN take his contract but very little need for one year of an aging overpaid underperforming player. Without retention and/or a VERY favorable extension, JT is a negative asset. No one is paying to help TOR with their cap issues. TOR will have to pay to move him, if he is even willing to waive in the first place. Get used to the idea of him not waiving and then walking away next summer or taking a team friendly deal to retire in TOR.

Just because they have cap space doesn’t mean they’re giving it away for free.

Think back to Marleau, he was still a useful player but the Leafs needed to free up cap space, they paid Carolina a 1st round pick to take him.

First of all This is literaly just assuming if he waived that’s the whole point of this. Second not saying giving u cap is good but u have more then enough space to take him and we’re paying u a third to take it and it doesn’t affect u at all there’s no downside to them taking this deal at all and u get a third for FREE. Why don’t u take this deal? A third to take cap space that u aren’t even using. Ur acting like ur a competing team

He’s wrong by thinking that tavares is going to get us anything with that bad contract but getting a third and 2 young players whether they’re good or bad to take that cap space there not going to use anyway is crazy to turn down. It’s essentially a third to help a team in the other conference when they’re not even competing.

Before I even begin to formulate a response, What are you even talking about? Like, What exactly are you referring to? Because I was responding to the other guy.

If you are talking about giving a 3rd round pick for $11M in cap space, a 3rd doesn't even come close to paying for that kind of cap relief or the salary he is owed. I'm not sure how that isn't clear to you. Rebuilding teams set themselves up to have cap space for this very reason. A 3rd round pick is a crap shoot. That doesn't pay for $11m in cap relief and $8m in total salary owed. If you think it does, you are nuts.

I was just responding in general.

“Rebuilding teams set themselves up to have cap space”

A team like Detroit or Ottawa might because they are turning competitive and maybe sign competitive free agents not the second worst team in the league and next year they’ll probably still be bottom 5 regardless.

Lets play this out. The hawks have 34 mil in cap which is 11 mil under the minimum are you telling me a bottom 3 team in the league is going to spend north of 20 mil in the off season? No. So you’re telling me with the left over cap they aren’t spending anyway a 1 year 11 mil is gonna do anything to them. So it doesn’t affect them at all but on top of that they get 2 young players who could turn to nothing or role players and a 3rd. A third that you get for taking players that aren’t affecting you in anyway.

Just because they have the cap space doesn't mean they have to burn it bailing out your stupid front office. If Toronto wants that cap space freed up, they can pay for it. A 3rd and some throwaway players (including ANOTHER cap dump) isn't going to cut it.
